Contest Customizing Contest: What's on the 13th Floor? {winners announced in post #2}

Jul 30, 2017

    1. There's an ancient hotel downtown with a crumbling, stately facade that stands out against the skyline. It's shorter and fatter than the newer glass boxes around it, with a hodgepodge of arched windows crawling upward against pale stone. If you squint just right there are shapes hanging over the side of the roof with barely discernible faces staring down at you, a last little touch to add character that's only obscured fifteen floors below. They could be cherry cheeked little angels or they could be grotesquely deformed devils; from here it's impossible to tell. Maybe that's the point.

People whisper about this place, and the adventurer in you can't help but want to see it for yourself. It's not hard to get a reservation. Your footsteps echo on cracked marble floors as you step inside the deserted lobby, vaulted ceilings taking up the sound and giving it a life of its own. The man at the counter is ingratiating and eager, pressing an old fashioned key into your hand with more pomp and circumstance than it probably warrants, grinning all the while. He holds out a hand to gesture towards the elevator.

It's an antique birdcage that creaks and shifts dubiously under your weight as you step onto it. It has so many unlabeled switches that it still has to be operated by a real live human being, who's clearly been at the job for so long now that she probably contributes to the creaking. You tell yourself it's no big deal, that the hotel wouldn't use it if it was dangerous, and pause to check your room number – floor 13, room 3.

You watch her as she reaches towards the elevator buttons. They have a dull patina, with shiny, polished wear patterns in the centers from years of use. You wonder how she knows to press the button for your floor when you haven't said a word beyond your mumbled greeting and startle when she turns that same overeager smile on you as the desk clerk. You smile back, watch her pull a key from around her neck to fit into a lock by the lever and turn another knob, trying to calm your hammering heart that definitely isn't trying to tell you something. It's just an elevator, and people smile at guests. Of course they do.

But when you look up to the dial over the door to watch the floors fly by, you notice...

      There's no 13th floor.

There shouldn't be, but the elevator creaks to a halt with the dial stuck neatly between floors 12 and 14. The doors open before you can think to ask what's going on, groaning and snapping until they've cleared your line of sight enough to peer properly inside. What greets you is not what you expected.

Historically the 13th floor is omitted from the listing in many high rise buildings in the US, where triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number 13, is common. This can be done in a number of ways, but most buildings skip the number 13 on the listing of floors (so that it reads 11, 12, 14, 15).

The idea of the "missing" or "secret" floor has inspired the imagination since the invention of high rise buildings brought this superstitious tradition into popular culture. What if you could travel to that missing floor? What would happen there? What secrets would it hold? Was it hidden away to protect something on it from us, or us from whatever lurks within?

This year's customizing contest is about creating something you think you would find on this mysterious 13th floor! You can paint a faceup, or tattoos, or create a permanent (or temporary) modification on your doll, or any combination of techniques, to create your magical mystery being!

      Contest Rules
      1. You may enter designs on ONE doll or doll head. Entries can be any combination of faceups, tattoos, and/or modifications (additive, subtractive, permanent, and temporary mods are all allowed). Entries can be just heads without bodies.
      2. Designs can be executed in any medium.
      3. No Photoshop or otherwise digitally enhancing the design. Only resizing and cropping are allowed.
      4. Designs should be created for this contest. Please do not submit work done prior to this event.
      Additional specific rules:
      • Photos: All entries must include three photos of the design from different angles, showing the design clearly and uncovered. Your photos should really be showcasing only the work you have done. They should not include other dolls, props, or sets. Photos must be submitted in JPG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry.

      • Prior work: Entries may not include any previous work at all. Faceups and tattoos should be done on a blank doll. Doll with prior extreme modifications may not be used. Dolls with very small modifications (like an eye opening or closing, slight facial restructuring, or pierced ears) are allowed. Small modifications will not count as a modification for contest purposes.
All entries must also meet the general anniversary contest rules and eligibility requirements.
IMPORTANT: Describing your entries, posting photos, or soliciting votes (either on DoA or on offsite blogs or forums) before the contest has closed will result in disqualification.

Please come to Ask the Moderators to ask any questions about the customizing contest.

      Prizes
All prize heads will arrive blank and ready for customization. The first place winner will get first choice from the following prizes:

    2. :sumomo: Results! :sumomo:

Thank you to everyone to entered the Customization Contest this year! This was our first year adding modifications and tattoos into the contest, so it was wonderful to see such a broad range of styles and skills, and the interesting ideas you all had!

    3. Question! I understand no photoshop, but are watermarks okay?

    4. @AnchixDPx No, watermarks should not be included. Entries will be presented anonymously, so identifying yourself on it in any way is against the rules. :)

    5. I have a question regarding the "spoiler" …
I am not sure what kind of connection our creations are supposed to have to the atmosphere you created in your story. If the scene that unfolds is unexpected it can be practically anything from a gloomy dystopian scenario filled with monsters to a rainbow meadow inhabitated by glitter unicorns …
Do the concepts of the customizations have to relate to the "unluckiness" of the 13th floor?

    6. @evie the kid The scenario was left open ended on purpose to encourage a variety of interpretations, so you decide! You could go with an unlucky interpretation of the hidden floor or maybe whatever you place there is actually a really lucky find! It's up to you.

    7. @Amet Cool, thank you! This will be a very interesting challenge - I'm very much looking forward to everyone's interpretations! :)

    8. I hope there are lots of crazy mods! Dacchan needs some monster friends hahaa! :D

    9. Do you want before and after face-up/mod photos?

    10. @Luckyl Just the finished work from the required angles is fine! :)

    11. Thank you!

    12. Another clarification question:
      Entry type: (faceup, tattoo, modification)
So if your entry has a face-up, mods, and tats what would the entry type be, all of them?

And what would classify small modification vs large?

    13. I have a question. If the entry has both a face-up and multiple tattoos, what should the three pictures be of? A close up of the faceup, a detail shot of one tattoo and a full body shot to show the faceup and the rest of the tatoos?

    14. @Luckyl yes, if you end up doing all three, you would just list all three. :) And, a small modification is things like eye opening or closing, slight facial restructuring, or pierced ears. A large modification would include things like a full dye job, carving a skull on one side of a head, or carving a music box design over a whole doll, just as a few examples -- if you have something specific you are wondering about, please feel free to come to Ask the Mods, and we can tell you in more detail. :)

@FastFeet For something like that, yes, what you wrote would work. :) Or alternatively, you could do a photo collage if needed for some aspects; one with a collage of 3 views of the faceup, another showing various angles of the tattoos, and then a full-body shot (for example).

For anyone else wondering about photos, what we're looking for is a selection of photos that will allow people (and voters!) to see every side of the work you've done. So one photo straight-on, then one of each profile side are the best options.
Then if you are doing a faceup, and tattoos, and a modification, a collage is definitely an acceptable way to do it, since you would have a little more work to show.

    15. Thank you so much for the clarification! I will contact a mod if I have further questions about modifications.

    16. This coincides perfectly with my plan for the new doll that I just received today!!

    17. I noticed that we will be uploading photos directly to DOA when we enter, correct? Is there a size limitation on the photos?
Is it the same photo entry format as the Triathlon :"Photos must be submitted in JPG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized photos or photos sent in the wrong format will disqualify your entry."

    18. @Luckyl

Thank you for catching that! Looks like we forgot to include it! :sweat Yes, it uses the same requirements. :)

    19. My pleasure! Thanks for the quick response. :)

    20. This weekend is the last chance to enter this contest! :) Sunday evening at 11:59pm (EDT) is the cutoff point, so make sure to get your entries in before then! :dance

    21. Can mods include pieces and/or head parts of other dolls? Or must every modification be hand sculpted?

    22. @Dybbuk Yes, modifications can use parts of other dolls, as long as they are all on topic. Things that are not allowed would be, for example, to sculpt an entirely new body part or head from clay, to use a Monster High body instead of an on-topic BJD body, or add a Pullips head into the mix, things like that. :)

    24. @Marha - Can I second that sentiment? My entry is the Dollshe guy with the bird skull on his head and I'm dreading scraping all that tack off. Your doll was definitely something I wouldn't like to run into on the 13th floor btw. ;)

Also seconding the congratulations to all the winners! It was such a cool contest to take part in and see all the wonderful entries. :) Lots of creepy little dollies (which are my favorite) xD This was so fun, I can't wait for next year's contest (hopefully)! I never really do the contests each year because of time, but this year I had surgery and was stuck at home for a week and could finally crank out an entry. ^_^

    25. OOooh!! I didn't understand your at first tbh but the more I thought about it the more I loved the idea!! I just wish the tack had been darker.. But it was great!

    26. Congrats everyone!

While there were so many good ones, I have to say I'm happy to see the little gold scorpion won a prize because I LOVED that little guy!! I have a soft spot for fantasy tinies, but I never would have thought to have painted one like that. So cool!

Mine was the mouse, by the way, and I...might actually keep her faceup for awhile because she's supposed to be a creepy weirdo anyway. XD

    27. May I ask those who participated: Did you use dolls you already had, or did you end up buying cheap heads/etc. to do what you did? :)

    28. I used a doll head that I already had and my bf was so kind to let me borrow the neck piece to me :)

    29. I used a doll I already had. She needed a new look anyway. :P

    30. Oh boy I'm so exited I won :o I didn't expect it, I just hoped very hard XD Thanks to everyone who voted <3 It was very exiting as there were so many good entries!

@Fate, I was lucky, I had just impulse bought the doll I used and she is a faulty cast from the days D-Storic send out uncured dolls, so she's very discolored and needed a face-up completely covering her, it really pushed my creativity

    31. @Marha : Thanks! I really had a hard time with the theme because I didn't want to permanently mod my doll into a monstrous creature and then never be able to sell it XD So I just played with sticky tack, the bad thing (er thing I learned) is that sticky tack does not take paint or blush very well. So it was a process. I was hoping it would look like it was "growing" from the head but I think I needed to blend it better. Otherwise it was just for fun and the thrill of competing! I rarely ever get to do things like this. :)

@CloakedSchemer : Your mouse was definitely creepy! I too was wondering how many people were going to keep this look on some of their heads. I think mine is coming right off.

@Hasel : Congrats!!!! Yours was most definitely impressive. I was also shocked to know it was a Narae!! You transformed her. What prize are you going to choose? Sorry for being nosey lol

    32. Congrats on winning, @Hasel ! Yours was my favourite, I love the design SO much. It hits all the right spots with the colour scheme and impact :chocoberry<3

It was wonderful to see so many great entries, everyone had a really unique take on theirs <3

    33. For the winners -- please wait until you receive word from a mod before discussing prizes. Certain mods are in charge of handling the prizes, and we are still finalizing the specific of how we're handling it. But don't worry! You will all get conversations (probably from me :XD: ) to tell you what to do soon!

    34. CONGRATULATIONS to the winners!!
