Contest Customizing Contest ~ Diamond Anniversary

Aug 7, 2014

    1. Customizing Contest ~ Diamond Anniversary

      Description

Gather your glitter and metallics! This year's face-up contest is based on the traditional tenth anniversary gift of tin and the modern anniversary gift of diamonds.

      Rules

      1. Each member may enter ONE face-up design. Entries can be just heads without bodies. Entries can be shown styled with wig and eyes, but styling should not obscure the face-up.
      2. Face-ups can be executed in any standard medium: paint, pencil, pastel or airbrush. Face-ups may be enhanced with sparkly additives like gemstones, rhinestones, sequins, glitter, metallic leaf etc, but these elements must be integrated into the face-up rather than act as jewelry laid over the finished face-up.
      3. No Photoshop or otherwise digitally enhancing the face-up. Physical modifications to the sculpt are allowed.
      4. Face-ups should be created for this contest. Please do not submit work done prior to this event.

If you have any questions about materials that may link you to your entry, please post in Ask the Moderators so that you do not accidentally disqualify yourself from the contest!

      Prizes

The first place winner will have first choice of the following prizes:

A blank MigiDoll River head, generously donated by Migidoll!

A blank Fairyland MiniFee Juri event head (Soony Elf), generously donated by Fairyland!

A blank Angel Studio 1/6 Baby Little Demon head (scar version), generously donated by Angell-Studio!

A custom pair of Gumdrops urethane eyes, generously donated by Ethereal Angels!

Who May Compete for the Prizes?

This contest is open to all members who have joined on or before the date of June 30th, 2014.
Participants must be members in good standing. Members may not participate if they have a marketplace suspension, marketplace ban, unresolved transactions or a paging status.
Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it. It is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests. Tick the box "I am not competing for the prize" on your submission form if you do not intend to keep the prize.

It is possible to participate just for fun, without competing for the prizes. Tick the box "I am not competing for the prize" on your entry submissions. Entries will be displayed along with the competing entries, but will not appear on the voting forms.
Current Den of Angels staff may participate, but are not eligible for prizes.
Members who have won prizes in past customizing contests may participate for fun, but they are not eligible for a prize in this contest.
Recast supporters may participate for fun using on-topic dolls, but they are not eligible for the prizes from these donors.
If you have a question about your eligibility, please post in Ask the Moderators.

      Submission

      • You may submit up to three views of the face-up. Each photo should be a maximum of 400x600 pixels (orientation of portrait or landscape is not important). One of these views MUST be a full view of the face. The format must be .GIF or .JPG. Your images should be minimally altered and should accurately represent the face-up.
      • Submissions should include a list of materials used, a description of any modifications made to the sculpt, the doll company and sculpt name, and a description of your inspiration. If you choose an obscure reference, please be sure to include an explanation in the submission description.
      • Entries will be not be included in the voting if they do not meet the submission guidelines: Photos must be in the correct format and size. There should be no personally identifying information on the photos - no name, username, email, web address, or watermark. When voting is open, your images will be hosted on the DoA server and shown anonymously.

    2. So if gem stones must be integrated into the face-up, not just applied does that mean you are looking for us to mod the sculpt to incorporate a stone?

    3. That reference is to using jewelry. The integration reference here is that any type of gems you'd like to add should be something attached (ie glued) to the head, and not something temporary that you can take off and put back on.
Of course, if you would like to mod the sculpt to incorporate something, you may do that as well! :)

    4. Will there be only one winner and thus only one of those prizes given? Or will the unchosen prizes be given to runners up?

    5. There will be as many winners as we have prizes! Second place gets second pick, etc. :)

    6. If I'm also working co-op with my fiancee on the Triathalon, may I also compete for the prize here?

    7. You may compete in as many contests as you'd like! :)

    8. My face up skills suck...but now's a good enough time to practice right? :sweat

    9. I don't have time to participate in this contest (too bad, I have about 23904823094* heads lying around in need of face up), but I LOVE the theme :D !!! I can't wait to see everyone's sparkly entries!!

      *number may be slight exaggerated

    10. The prize selection has been updated! We're now offering the new Juri event head from Fairyland! If you've been wanting a MiniFee Soony, now is your chance! :XD:

    11. I have a question: can one of the images submitted be a collage of images? Or just one view?

    12. A collage of details is okay! :) As per the rules, only one of the three images must be a clear front view of the faceup.

    13. Awesome, thank you! :)

    14. The only head that I have available to be painted is also the same doll I am using for the Triathalon... Is this allowed?

      Thanks!

    15. I submitted my entry, but realized I forgot to include one of the materials I used. Do we need to list everything used including sealant, glue, etc.?

    16. Don't worry about it! :) Sealant and glue are a given, and they're invisible in the final result anyway.

    17. Are we allowed to use a photo editor to correct exposure and temperature? My pictures usually come out too dark. Can we correct the picture so that it more accurately represents the face up or is that kind of editing not allowed? Thanks.

    18. That kind of editing is allowed! :)

    19. Oh good. Thank you!

    20. Sweet! Thanks for the clarification.

I am so excited to see what everyone did for this contest. This theme is the perfect vehicle for inspiring creativity! But I must say that the DOA mods and Doll companies/sponsors really outdid themselves this year with coming up with spectacular and fun games and prizes.

    21. Ah bother, bother, bother. I just submitted my photos but stupid me, I forgot to write down the sculpt name. Is there a way to backtrack somehow to add it? :doh

    22. I think if you post in Ask the Mods someone will be able to add that for you.

    23. All submitted... Oh man, I'm really happy with my submission, but I know I need so much more work as an artist. n_n,

    24. I wonder if there will be a lot of entries for this one. There's not very much chatter in this thread compared to the other ones. Maybe as the deadline gets closer, people will have more to talk about.

    25. Maybe? I know I'm a lurker, for the most part, on the forums. n_n,

I kind of wished I'd used a different doll for this contest than the one I did, but it's too late now and both are already painted.

    26. I wasn't sure I was going to try this one. The triathlon has been taking up almost every hour of every day!
Also, my faceups suck, so this was more of Good Practice than showcasing any talent. But inspiration struck, and I thought what the hay. It's far from professional looking, but it was fun to do!

      Good luck, everyone! ^___^

    27. Ah thank you! Next time I need to triple check everything. >.<

    28. My entry has panoramic scenes for hair and a scene painted inside the head back. Can I collage an image to show it in full detail but then have three official views that are judged? There's a lot of detail and I'd hate for it to not get shown.

    29. Good luck everyone! :)

    30. V What I asked V

      So, yes! :)

Is anyone else really excited to see all the entries?! I don't want to wait!!

    31. Should be finishing up my entry today and submitting! Excited to see everyone's work. :D

    32. Ok so last minute I decided to give this contest a go. Just a little confused on the theme. So we have to integrate tin and diamonds into a face up correct? Must it be both or can we choose between diamonds OR tin?

    33. :) You can choose any combination you like!

    34. Bleh, my first attempt didn't go to well and the weather has been iiiick this week. Hoping to pull it off at the last minute though.

    35. All done! :D Just submitted my entry. Goodluck everyone~

Can't wait to see all the beautiful dollies!!

    36. Since I plan to keep this faceup a while (like I'm sure a lot of us are with this much work!) I continued the design throughout the rest of the doll. Since this is a faceup only contest, would it be more prudent to photograph only as a floating head? The rules talk about how added jewelry and extras shouldn't be used, so I wondered if additional non-head detailing, even if not intended to be part of the faceup, should be covered so as to not effect fair judgement of the faceup alone

Also, to avoid any possible disqualification, should we be focusing on "faceup shop" style photographs, or can on-doll, set scene, ambient closeups be ok, so long as we follow the aforementioned rules about photoshop and accurately showing the faceup?

      Thank you!

    37. Oh shoot, I didn't see this thread until just recently, I hope I can finish something in time. ;;;

    38. Since the contest is all about the faceup, you would want to take photos that really show off your work. :) A floating head, faceup-shop style would make it easier for voters to see all the details.

    39. I kind of have the reverse of that question: How long do we need to keep these face ups? Do we need them at all for anything after submitting them?? I was planning on using this head for Dollism, and in order to finish I'm going to have to wipe it soonish.

    40. Submitted my entry! Just playing for fun though, and indeed it was very fun! Like last year I tried something really different to anything else I've worked on before.
Can't wait to see everyone else's entries :dance

    41. I did the same. :) It was really fun to do something completely unusual (for me) for once. :)

    42. I JUST finished mine, and like y'all, I tried some new stuff too. I can't WAIT to see everyones entries!

    43. I'm excited to see the entries too. ^_^ This year I worked up the courage to enter, and did the faceup this morning in a fit of inspiration. I've been second guessing myself, but it is too late - I already turned in my homework. :XD: Good luck everybody!

    44. Working on mine. Not turning out as epic as it was in my head. But I need to finish it anyway >__<

    45. Wanted to do one today, but it's to humid for face upping here.... I don't think I'll get it finished. *pitty*

    46. That's been my problem most of the week :/ Try it anyway! Sometimes I have random luck in humidity. Worse case scenario it doesn't work, but at least then you tried.

    47. Well, I tried something out new, way more extreme than what I normaly do^^
It's only temporary and I'm so glad I sprayed the first sealant yesterday, because today it rained a lot.

Lets hope for the best. Good luck everyone^^

    48. I just submitted mine! I'm so excited. This was a fun challenge, and I'm really happy with the way my doll came out. I can't wait to see what everyone else has done!

    49. JUST submitted mine after quadruple checking all my links!

    50. Submissions are now closed!

    51. Yay, everyone! This was an interesting challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's lovely face-ups. I promise to vote, even though I didn't get a chance to compete. :)

    52. Arrrg, I should have done the FU a bit earlier yesterday, this morning I inspected my work and a thousend things I could have done different appeared. What's done is done, but I'm glad I gave it a try. It was fun going out of my norm and he looks better and better the more I don't concentrate on the details ^^
I'll be letting him lay around this way for a while.

    53. Kinda bummed I didn't make it for this one! The couture contest took all my time ^^; Oh well, still excited to see all the beautiful heads everyone did!

    54. When will voting be posted; midnight tonight, or early tomorrow?

    55. Wow! Amazing work guys!! There are definitely some artists I'd commission work from!!

You should all be proud of your glittery lovelies!

    56. I'm so proud of everybody!! Great job!

    57. Holy diamonds Batman! These are all so amazing! It's gonna be so hard to vote!

    58. Seriously, a lot of these are craaaaazy good. :O

    59. Thank you everyone, for participating! I'm no good with faceups so I enjoyed looking every entry! couple were my total favorites but it was a tough call who to give other two votes...
