Aug 22, 2013

    1. The challenge of this year's Customizing Contest was to create a face-up illustrating the answer to the question "When you dismantle a face-up, what lies beneath?"

      The Entries!

Description: MONEY. The root of the hobby and the thing that keeps it all going round. You pay for the doll, you pay for the paint (even if you do it yourself) and so when you really get down to it, if you scratch the surface of any doll, you find cold, hard cash.

Description: Behind the face-up, nevertheless how it is composed, nevertheless what is its style, is the creativity of a human mind and the burn of an artistic soul that has given it its form and tacit story to tell to whoever lies their eyes on the doll. In a face-up combine both the sculptor's aspiration as do the painter's, and they mold together into an intriguing piece of art. It is like a molten lava forming according to its own will but also influenced by the characteristics of its surroundings creating something new and fruitful.

Description: My inspiration was Marilyn Monroe.

Description: Inspired by a broken mirror. Can he keep the shattered remnants of the mask he wears from falling away completely?

      Entry #5

Description: I found out when I wiped the (gorgeous) company faceup off the only non-smiley extra head in my head-box. Turns out it's white resin. Pretty, but boring. I figured that couldn't be all there was too it, and tried again, this time doing a new, complete faceup on the whole head, sealant and all. I then dipped a cotton ball into the brush cleaner, and sort of wiped/splashed it on half the faceup, mostly removing it, and somewhat smearing it around. To my surprise, there was a scull-face underneath which appeared seemingly by magic!

Description: Often times when dismantling a face up (wiping it), the sealant will do interesting things. My intention was to depict a face up in the state of being dismantled. Half the face is bare resin and in the state of being peeled away, revealing what lies beneath, and the other half is pristine.

Description: My thoughts on a 'dismantled faceup' were what are the base elements; raw materials, and primary colours.
So I applied these to the doll almost as though it were an artist's palette. Paint is splashed and dripped on, pastels smudged, and pencils scribbled.

      Entry #8

Description: We all know quite literally what lies beneath a face-up is bare resin. So I took my inspiration from the next closest thing, the "face-ups" people wear. Make up can be used for so many things, covering scars, altering appearances in film, enhancing one's natural beauty. Some wear it because it helps their self-esteem, some wear it to try and impress a boy or girl, some wear it because they enjoy the artistry of bright eye shadow or a perfectly applied liquid line. Made up or fresh faced I think there is a definite and distinct beauty to whichever face a person chooses to show the world, and like wise there's a strange (and often messy) beauty to scrubbing one away to reveal the other. So that is where I took my inspiration from.
