custom molds, magnets and copywrites?

Jun 30, 2005

    1. Pardon, i don't know much about copywrites... but i was thinking of making my own sculpt for my own purposes that would be compatable with the serendipidy sharmin ears.

Obviously, if I'm doing this for my own use and not selling the product it wouldn't violate any copywrite codes.. but if i finish the head and decided I wanted to sell them, i would run into a problem wouldn't i, since the headcap mold would have to be similar to serendipidy's to fit the optional ear parts? Or am I mistaken?? I think I heard that there must be a certain percentage difference between the original and the 'copy' for it to not be considered a copy? I just thought it would be awesome, since serendipidy gives you three sets of ears but thus far no other heads to change them with (the other serendipidy doll's ears are very much attached to their head)

Also, if you bake a magnet (in the clay/resin) would it lose its magnetivity? (i was thinking of having the headcap close with magnets instead of the serendipidy snaps [im afraid of popping one off o.o] i think.. kawainino had magnets for a while.. or serendipidy did at one point.

thanks for any insight you can give me ^_^

    2. hi dechanique,

Im almoast 100% sure that as long as your not copying a sculpture directly ( for example,.. made a silicone mold off of an existing head sculpt/doll part and trying to make castings and sell them) your fine..

A better example would be if i did a custom hand sculpt that fit CP dolls and sold it as a part made by me that was compatible with CP dolls it would be fine,..BUT,... if i took a pair of CP hands, made a mold off of them, made castings and tired to sell them it would be Illegal.

      I hope that helps,

I know you can put magnets into resin and they still work,..and im fairly sure you can bake them as well :daisy (fairly sure)

    3. <Paul> I plan on using magnets in the head caps of my dolls too(some day) that's how souldoll does it! it makes changing eyes so easy! ^_^

    4. I'm pretty sure that if you bake a magnet in clay--like in the oven, for something like Sculpey that doesn't require a blazing kiln--it won't hurt the magnets magneticity--magnetiz--magneticness--um, magnetlike nature. I used to bake sculpey magnets before for my refridgerator, using decent round magnets.

    5. I'd be inclined to leave a depression and glue the magnet in after.

As for copyright, it depends if the certain gimicks or mechanisms have been copyrighted. I'm pretty sure you would find that the unoa eye mechanism is copyright ... or else other makers would be using it right? and it would be illegal to copy that in a doll. I also recall reading somewhere that one of the joints on the cp boys was copyrighted? but I'm not 100% sure on that. I think in terms of the head that would work with sharmins ears, you should probably clear it with the makers or a lawyer first to make sure you're not infringing anything

    6. hmmm if the head comes out nice and i decide to sell it (when... i learn to cast? rofl!) i think it might be a good idea to email first.. i love serendipidy.. and my little sharmin ^_^ but im impatient for that sharmin boy them promised back in january! :P Plus i wanna try my own hand at making a doll.. even if i dont have enough $$/ can't mold/cast resin yet..

and it would also be a good thing i think to have more optional head for unoa/sharmin/sdcute size bodies.

    7. thanks for all your insight guys! ^_^
