Eye Templates! Here are some eye templates if you need someplace to start designing your own eye chips. ___________________________________________________ How to make Anime eye chips This was brought up in another part of the forum, While I have never made any Anime Eye-chips I figured it out how easy it was to do. Here are some step by step instructions and A few Screen caps to show you some of the steps. Step 1: Find your source image, the eyes should be straight on and unblocked. If you are handy with photoshop you can rotated the eye so it's straight like so: I am using Sailor moon's eye for this one but you can do this with any kind of eye. --------- Step 2: Color or erase out the surrounding from the image of the eyes you want a clear image like so: be sure that you are using the Eye template don't' worry about the pupil you can erase it later. the gray around the eyes is useful then you do print it out it will guide your cutting. ----- Step 3: Duplicate the eye template layer and cut out the whites and erase the pupel leaving the gray round hallow in the center. Step 4: Copy the image of the eye and paste it in between the layers of the templates like so: --------- Step 5: You may need to re-size the image so that it fits right into the Template. Tip: You can make the eye as big as you'd like but the lower part of the image and the eye should be touching for a more natural look. I hope you have fun making Anime eyes and I hope that you post photos of them in this thread, I would really like to see them in your dolls. ...on to the next section. _________________________________________ How to Make print outs for eye chips. This is for those who are using Pupapa's D.eye.Y Eye-bases. Sometimes the D.eye.Y bases don't fit or seems a bit small. The effects can be pretty varied, from cracks, bubbles or the lenses not snapping in properly at all. If you are finding that out, or have been racking your brains out to figure out a solution, I have discovered one that I have been doing for all my round-bases eye commissions. Here's a sample of one of my early blunders: At another angle, (it ain't pretty is it?) Here's what you do: -Take a Craft knife with a pointy sharp end and carefully shave at the inner lip of the eye wider. Yes, you heard me, you shave it wider. The Eye hole where the lens sit should be slightly wider just enough for the lenses to sit correctly, but if you do it too much, the lenses will fall out, if that happens, if the gap between the lens and bases-wall is not too noticeable then just dab a bit a bit of adhesive to the back of the eye lense/eyechipp and snap back into place. it should hold. If you have any questions or if my instructions are not clear enough please feel free to Post your questions here or PM me. (If your the shy type.) I find this minor alteration to the bases quite helpful when switching between eye-lens types and it also makes a sightly better fit. ___________________________________ Please Be aware ! When using the D.eye.Y Eyes as a base, You Cannot use Nail-polish on them at all, I found out the hard way that Clear nail polish makes them cloudy. I used clear acyclic gloss paint medium. It dries clear and can be used as an adhesive for the eye-chips. As well as "Modge Pogde" will work as an adhesive. ___________________________________________________________________ Here is an little informational bit on: "Why you should use adhesive." Use on the whole of the eye chip, while you are making the eye. Here are some photo examples: (updated photos yay!) I The eyes are as followed (from left to right) Teal Eye lens* -Full adhesive - (This is what your are looking for.) Blue Gease eye*- adhesive not working. Oval - little bubbles adhesive Round Single Red* - Adhesive bubbled. *Theses eyes are made from Puapapa's D.eye.Y eye blanks. AS you can see (Perhaps not so clearly.) The difference between using adhesive and not. If an adhesive is not used, it creates a 'shine' when the eye is turned on an angle. when bubbles happen this 'shine' also shows up quite clearly when you have the eye in hand. When you use an adhesive, it creates an solid bound with between the lens and the eye-chip. Making the color much clearer and giving the (mattalic) eye that liquid jewel-like tone and shine. but be warned, the effects of bubbling can be caused by lint, finger oils, dust. So always always keep your workspace clean and wipe off your eye lenses and eye-chips with a lint-free cloth. (the type you clean glasses work wonderfully.) and handle them carefully. ______________________________________________________________________ = Tips = DO: If you scratch your lens a thin layer of clear nail polish with minimize slight scratches. DO: Sandpaper the place where you made the hole in the plastic. it will minimize the damage done. DO: Experimient using nail polish, never know, your nice shade of pearly pink could look nice in your dolls eyes. Don't: Use Super scuptly on these eyes, the clear lenses will crack! >_<;; Don't: Use any kind of Acetone, it will make your clear lens turn cloudy

Coolies! Thanks for this! So, if I wanted to take it to the next step, I suppose would be making molds of the two parts and casting the iris in clear and the white in white?
i always use Silvo cleaning polish to get the mirror backs off clear gems for eye lenses, i wonder if that would work on these type of eyes? (has a set of 12 arriving soon) i fixed a scratch on my fave pair of acrylic eyes by polishing with that..... i always thought these type of eyes were cast in one piece...YAY for you for showing me otherwise.....
That is super neat! Thank you for sharing! I would have never thought about using clear nailpolish as a removing agent. Super spiffy.
ooh~ I love how the doll is used for this tutorial~ very cute! I also enjoyed the tutorial as well and found it very informative. thank you ^^
Nifty tut! I'm wondering about the nail polish tho.. Is it really safe to use on the eyes? I've seen what it can do to eyechips, and am afraid that the same thing might happen with these.
Thank you. If you can find clear acrylic nail polish it shouldn't harm the eyes, the eyes I used are made out of Clear Acrylic plastic.
If the half rounds can be dismantled with out too much damage to the eye-shell and Iris, then I'd say go for it... The reason why I chose the oval acrylic flat-backs is that it's easy to pop the iris out,
Okies i'll do some tonight as i can't sleep right now.... Okay.... sucky pics...i'm half asleep....not polished yet either....and a word to the wise...don't do this in a hurry! wait until the iris is stuck and dry! don't be like me
This is cool! have you tried copying online photos of eyes to cut out? Please thank Sephion for me for his great work!
Print outs? They are lovely, though I can see where you had the trouble. If's it's possible you can just pop the lens back out and re-do it. No, I try to make my own eye designs, thought copying from a online pic does fringe on copyright >_>;; Sephy: Your Welcome! *Waves*
yep, printouts...didn't leave the varnish to dry long enough before trying to cut the iris off the backing it was only a quick for fun thing but it works better than my round style ones i made as the dome is much lower in these... and, Sephion....you are a great assistant...you can make eyes for me any time! (have you ever heard of a tv programme called Blue Peter?)
OMG this is too addicting I went crazy and made a lot of print-outs to put in my Talinas flatbacks. Made with Photoshop. The colors came out weird (I guess the printer needs new ink) but it was fun to do. I like the light violet ones the best. Here's Kiahn with the result: (excuse for the eyeless-ness of his..other eye... the round ones don't fit there)
For anyone interested in an eye chip to test out. I made some for everyone to try, if they'd want. I'll be messing about with this one to get different colors, so PM me if your interested. For now, I just have the Electric Blue and the Stormfront Grey: (If you sell eyes made with my chip, give me credit, ok? IF YOU MAKE ANY WITH MY CHIPS, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE PICTURES!! XD)
that's a great tutorial...I'm trying to get or make 6mm round eyes that are blind...light or no pupil...how do you suggest I make that?
Definitely would love to try this. I went to look at the link for the eyes and, is it normal for sellers to charge $7.50 shipping on a $1.50 item? I am new to this stuff , but it seemed overpriced to me.
I'm not sure about the shipping..... I think its 2.50 for postage, 4.00 or so for the box. (yea, eyes get shipped in a box.) then the rest for the "packaging." I useally make sure that I buy more then 10 pairs of eyes each time I order so that the shipping price makes sense to me. But it wouldn't hurt to ask that when you buy only one pair of eyes, to ask that they just shipp it in a bubble-mailer. Oh wow, those are some fantastic eye-colors. I think I'll try them out one day.
I love this tutorial! I didn't know you could do this to eyes, so last night I dug around my box-o-eyes for some that I could pop out the clear part. I used the Krystal eyes I bought from here. http://sistersanddaughters.com/wingsandeyes.html#Eyes which were cheap and ugly and I just threw them in my cart because they were cheap and I was buying stuff anyways. So heads up that "Krystal eyes" pop out too, and they are rounds with a stem. I dug around my sister's nail polish box and I think I used a color that changes in sunlight. Yay! I guess I'll find out if I did when I take her outside. I accidently wiped away the pupil of the eye (if you don't scrub too much it stays) so I had to repaint the pupil. And it's clearly... not so round. Still, I'm so excited about knowing how to do this! I bought 11 pairs of eyes the other day. Now I'm just waiting for them to come.
Wow, this is a great tutorial! I've got a few eye designs I'd love to attempt, I guess i'd best get ordering some spare eyes!
Aww, I came back to reference this post and the photos are gone. Any chance you could re-upload them?
I reverse engineered a direct link to the photobucket pics for the tutorial: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v324/Elysion_gear/eyetut/ Ah!! I see why they aren't showing, Elysion gear created a new directory in Photobucket for the tutorial and hasn't changed the links here on the forum to reflect it. Easy to fix ^_^
Oh Right ON! thank you so much, Lilnekochan. I was having a hard time envisioning how to use the hammer and nail. What a great set of pics. XD
Does anyone know if this place is still up and running? I placed an online order for eyes with them on the 7th and have heard nothing about it since receiving an automated "your order has been received" email. I sent them an email that got no response and I called the number on the website and let the phone ring for a long time. On the plus side, I paid by credit card and I can't find where they've been issued a payment. I just want to know if I should go find eyes elsewhere or if the order is going to go through suddenly without warning - like a chunk of ice through a straw.
Bump! I fixed the images, so my Custom Eye Tutorial is back up! Please, post your photos of your finished customs eyes,
The standard eyes that are in berenguer baby dolls work for this method too,and they are round . Its also a bit easier because they are hollow.. no iris to pry up.. just take of the paint on the inside. If you know any reborners, you are bound to be able to get some cheap. Wow, this looks...strangely easy. xD So of course if I try I bet I'll screw up royally, but here's to hoping anyway! >3 I've always sort of wanted a nice pair of green eyes...mhm...
Thank you soooo much for posting this! I was just thinking how could I find out how to make my own eyes?...YEAH, thanks!
This is really useful, I was wondering if it were possible to do such a thing, now I know. Thanks for sharing!
I just bought the pre-made eyes, where the crystal is seperate already. When I get them, I plan on putting in irises printed out from my printer. I wonder if the ink will smear when I use clear nail polish on the paper, and I wonder if the nail polish will go brown later from getting old. Is there something better that can be used? Maybe acrylic gloss instead? Thanks for any info
Well, I got the eye blanks off ebay today, and so I tried out my first set of eyes. One eye smeared more, so I redid it, and only had one eye to show off :P Here is the eye, can you guess which album I took it off of? Can you see the picture? I thought this was a fun way to do them
THANK GOD! There IS a way to customise eyes! I dont have any dolls as of yet but the girl I want to get is gunna be based off of an OC who has two odd eyes and a line through one! The odd eyes didnt bother me much but the line was gunna be an issue! Thanks a bundle for this!
Yah, I should add that what I did was design or actually, cut out a picture into a perfect circle in the Gimp, I then put in my pupil, then sized it to be 300 pixels in density and 96 pix in size X and Y They seemed to me to turn out just a tiny bit big, maybe my calculations were a bit off or the crystal was a bit smaller, but it wasn't by much. Finally, I put a drop of clear acrylic varnish on top of the picture I printed out on plain paper, slid my crystal on top, and centered it (trying to keep air bubbles out) and then let it dry. The ink smears very slightly, but that just gave the picture more depth and the pupil a nice solid black center. After it dried, I cut around the crystal with scissors and popped them in to the snug fitting eye base. Then inserted them into the eye I like this system alot. I can do any color, and it really looks deep and beautiful in person!
PM me if you need any help, any time. At the moment, I have this thread subscribed to, but probably not forever Good luck, I'll post more eyes, when I try another design out
