Currency exchange rates

Feb 9, 2015

    1. Hello all,

I'm just whinging to those all of you who have felt/are feeling my pain! lol. I am trying to save up for my first doll, right? All good. Then one must remember (as this one must) that I live in Australia. The Australian dollar is not doing overly well at the moment. Right now, 1 of our dollars gets about 75-78 US cents depending on the direction of conversion and whatever other factors get involved, and we're being told it's going to be this way for months.... or years.... :doh

So, for example, $300AUD is the same as..... $235USD!!!! :...(And we'll ignore the shipping costs for now.... at least I won't get hit with customs charges (unless the rules have changed recently??)

*sigh* (I know, first world problems, right? *rueful grin*)

***Please, please, please, please, Aussie dollar, please don't drop any more!!!!***

Feel free to join in! :)

    2. Canadian here. feeling your pain.

    3. Israeli here.
200 USD is 777 ILS right now!!

    4. Eurasian here, but used to be employed by an Australian company. I made the decision to leave my workplace because of the steadily declining AUD, which was putting a big dent in our generated revenue. I hope your country's economy recovers soon!

      Cheers.

    5. Another fellow Canadian here. I am about to swing $250USD on doll clothes (excluding shipping) and that's like $311CAD. We too suffer from the same rate 1CAD = 0.75USD and our currency doesn't look to bright.... so much SADNESS.

    6. Just spent $960USD, ended up being $1,265.43AUD. I mean, it's worth it in the end, but ouch. It's worse because the actual PayPal conversion rate is worse to account for fees and such. The PayPal rate is currently 75c to 1 US dollar, but according to XE, it's 78c to 1 US dollar.

And not that I'm one to be too political, but until our government starts patching things up with our trade partners, it's only going to go downhill from here.

    7. I just finished paying my last layaway. After I receive my doll, that's it for me untill the dollar recovers, however long that takes.

    8. Yes, it also happened to CAD currency too... I found most people like to use "online-exchange-rate-websites" to calculate their currency. But, the exchange rate is even worse if you use your non-US PayPal account to pay your dolls in USD currency because PayPal charges you 2.5% currency conversion fee! As a result, you pay more than the amount based on online exchange rate market. So, it's not worth for me to use CAD to convert to USD now. That's why I rarely touched it in my PayPal account since 2012.

    9. Yep. Ouch. I'm assuming there's a 2.5% fee if you use your credit card through Paypal as well as Paypal Balance?

    10. Every time I convert from one currency to another currency through my PayPal Balance, there will be 2.5% currency conversion fee included in the exchange rate. That's why you can't see how much they charge you currency conversion fee when you pay in another currency. But, you can see the difference between the exchange rate in PayPal and exchange rate in online market. This difference is how much they charge you currency conversion fee in the exchange rate.

If you already have USD currency in your PayPal Balance to pay your order in USD, then you don't have to pay the extra amount from the worse exchange rate in PayPal.

    11. It's awful isn't it :( I really hope it picks up soon. I was hoping to order more dolls this year but the exchange rate is so bad it's making me feel even more guilty about spending money on dolls!

    12. Russian here. 6 months ago 34 rubles would buy $1. Today it takes 68 rubles, and the situation is only getting worse.
I'd say we get what we deserve, but it's Russian government who commits one folly after another, and the common people who are suffering. Ugh.

    13. I'm Canadian too, but in a bit of a strange position... I sell stuff online in USD, so I can do shopping online without having to use Canadian currency ^^; So when the Canadian dollar tanks, I'm still okay.

    14. I feel your pain! I just bought an outfit from a lovely person here on DOA for $150 USD and almost choked when I saw the conversion was $211 CAD! Come on Canadian dollar I can't afford this! I'm planning on buying a doll body here soon for a really wanted character doll but after that I may have to wait before purchasing again!

    15. You can get around the Paypal exchange fee if you use a credit card and set it to charge you in the currency you're buying in. Then your credit card company uses the bank's current exchange rate, which is often lower than Paypal's. But I don't think that works with Paypal balances or purchases direct from a bank account. I just prefer to use a CC even when I don't have to to protect myself beyond Paypal's three month rule.

But yeah, I really miss those days when the Canadian and US dollars were at par. That was a good time :) That being said, the Japanese Yen isn't doing too well, either - but it made buying from Volks International last week not too bad. Not as good as if I was using US dollars, but still not too killer an exchange rate in comparison to the US dollar. Ouch!

    16. Singaporean here.. our dollar was supposed to be going strong but nooope it didn't, it kinda flopped recently and that makes buying overseas more painful now! I'm staring so hard at crobidoll's M-line boys, but my wallet is totally shouting NO!! at me. 530 usd would set me back around 730 sgd (according to google), add on face-up and shipping and the actual conversion rate.. pretty sure it'll hit around S$800++. That's a hugeee hole in my bank account.... And I ought to slap myself, my first doll's body ain't even here yet and I'm thinking of a second one!?

    17. I wish doll companies would let us buy from them in their local currency on their international websites. For some of them it would make the conversion less brutal

    18. I am upset with eBay as I checked what a doll would cost me in USD instead of the currency the doll was in British Pounds. It was current exchange rate but in end I paid $23 more. Not a lot but was still surprised when it went over $600 instead of staying under. Thankfully still a good deal but hoping more to seller and not eBay.

    19. I'm OK with conversion except for Paypal - they have defaults that chew a lot of extra money! Always use a card (not bank account) and change the option to "use card dealer for conversion". Because their rates are awful it can save you hundreds of dollars.
My bane is customs... On top of VAT they always get creative with "costs" and "fees" which translates to a 30% markup. It's highway robbery.

I understand that companies charge in dollars with a markup beacuse the default for international transactions is Paypal and Paypal takes a sizable fee.

    20. I think canada is in a similar boat as australia, cuz the conversion is BRUTAL. Maybe even moreso, especially with paypal. As an example, A dress outfit i purchased from LegendDoll was 146.40 US which SHOULD'VE translated into about, 193.98 CAD according to google. Not only was I wrong, but paypal added an EXTRA 8 DOLLARS to the US total and it actually converted into 210.08 CAD. And keep in mind this was with shipping included! Absolutely abyssal. I know it's my fault for purchasing from Legenddoll, who marks up the prices on their webpage... but this was ridiculous. And at the time, I didn't think to buy it from taobao yet.

To add insult to injury, the dress on said taobao cost like 700 yuan, which was abt 100ish US and 120 CAD. In the end I bought another dress for that price (as an experiment and bc i wanted it) thru a proxy site, and I only paid abt 150 CAD. SO MUCH lower than if i bought it thru legend or the doll company's US site.

I'm gonna be forever mad that canadians have to pay so much extra to translate into the US, when we literally sit on top of them so you'd think we'd get a discount or something. Or, y'know, have a closer match that what it is. Honestly, i have so much beef with the economy and markups and capitalism in general, but I'll end it here before I get too carried away.
