Materials Curious: Porcelain vs Resin?

Jun 18, 2014

    1. Hi guys!

Just out of curiousity, which one do you prefer (and why); porcelain dolls or resin dolls?

I'm thinking about creating dolls which are meant to be "permanent", like OOAK dolls or possibly dolls which are limited to 3 or less, and I'm wondering whether it's a good or a bad idea to make these dolls out of resin? It's what I'm used to, and I know absolutely nothing about creating porcelain dolls. To be honest, I'm more fond of resin dolls, but still.

      What's your opinion?

    2. I only own resin dolls, though I've handled a lot of porcelain dolls. I like that resin dolls are a bit more "playable" - you can take them out in a padded bag and they're probably going to be fine. I've dropped my resin dolls a couple of times and the worst that's happened is a bit of joint chipping around a very thin edge. A porcelain doll would be in bits.

The main thing for me is the feel and sound though. Resin occasionally creaks a bit... porcelain on porcelain makes a much more (to me) unpleasant noise. I can't even really stand putting away ceramic plates in a stack because of a similar noise. SCREEKLINK auggh. If it weren't for the sound I might explore them more but I will stick to resin because it doesn't make me want to claw my ears out.

    3. Hahaha! Thank you very much for replying with your opinion, Hysterical Paroxysm! But yes, I know what you mean, and I am not overly fond of those sounds myself.

But making dolls which are meant as OOAK and have permanent face paintings in resin might be a bad idea? I'm not sure.

    4. Personally, I don't think it would be a bad idea, but I really think that for ooak art dolls a more durable material would be better, so if you can do the dolls in porcelain then I think that would be the better choice.
I strongly think that you should make your dolls according to your capabilities, so if for you is the same to make a porcelain or a resin doll, then go porcelain, but if you already are capable to cast a doll in resin, I think you should start there .

    5. Thanks for the reply iki12!

I am currently unable to work with porcelain in any form, sadly, but I've started looking around for other alternatives. We'll see what happens.

In the meantime, does anybody on here know anything about Plasticréte?
