Crow the Eater (BBB Apollo Horror Mod) *Finished 2/22*

Jul 9, 2011

    1. Intro:
I always wanted to do some sort of mod, I'm always inspired by seeing QuearvoS's mods. Unfortunatly, I'm always chickening out, earlier this year I even bought a doll to dye but ended up selling it. This time I got out the dremel and committed myself. I decided to do a little horror character who I thought would be a fun doll to have, although I probably won't be letting him live in my bedroom.

      About the Character:
Crow is a demon who is part of a team of 3 that go around collecting souls that they are ordered to get (the order will read "a murderous soul" or "a murdered soul" or some such). His team is BIRD, consisting of Goshawk the Stalker and Magpie the Deceiver. "Eater" is actually his position: the Stalker finds the prey, the Eater drives the target insane and consumes the soul, and the Deceiver covers up for the process (depending on how this goes his teammates might get done but as of this moment only Crow is planned for).

Crow himself is nearing his 50th year on the job which means he will soon be able to access his memories from before that time. The bad new, many demons have gone insane during this process. The good new, Crow is a little demented and sadistic (he loves to mess with his meals) so he has a lower chance of going crazy.

      Character Art:
I'm not so great at drawing but here's a doodle from my notebook.

      Plans:
This will only be a facial mod and really the only thing that needs to be done is the mouth, so hopefully this won't be too traumatizing for a first mod.

      Steps
      1. Wipe head (Done)
      2. Dremel off mouth (Done)
      3. Put in mouth holes (Done)
      4. Build face back up with milliput (Done)
      5. Dremel and Milliput until happy
      6. Sand
      7. More milliput and sanding as necessary
      8. Clean
      9. Faceup

      The Victim:

BBB Apollo was choosen because I like his eyes and because a WS boy was in stock at the Junky Spot. I had forgotten how pasty white their WS was, but that's exactly what this character needed.

      Step 1
      [IMG]

      Step 2
It is now too late to turn back *tries not to hyperventilate*

Some pencil work to mark the dremel zones for the next step

    2. O good luck with it! Ive not done a mod like this either :)

    3. I'm really interested to see how this turns out!!
      : DD
      Good luck with everything!!

    4. He's a fascinating character, especially his design. I'd love to see what else you'll do with him!

    5. Thanks MissKittyTwisted, mangalover, and bewaretheshort1. Hope that this mod keeps your interest.

      Step 3

You can see that the line from between the mouth is still there between the front holes, they went deep than I expected but will get filled in with milliput later.

I also sanded down his nose and chin/jaw area a bit. The left ear is bothering me a bit too, but I'm scared to touch it as I think ears are probably the thing I'm most terrified to work on after eyes.... even though you wouldn't see the ears with the wig on...

    6. Looking good so far, good luck Dom

    7. Looks like a really cool mod, can't wait to see it done :)

    8. Wow its looking really good. I didn't think the line between the lips would be that deep. Its an interesting thing to know.

    9. I cant wait to see more!

    10. Thanks for the support Uverstar, Nomi800, Zeta25, and karliferling

I thought the same thing about the lip crease, especially considering how much Apollo's lips protruded previously. This seriously explains why it's so hard to get paint out from between them though...

    11. Stage 4

This was the first time I've ever used milliput. I got the superfine white type off ebay. It dries whiter than the resin so I was a little surprised. You can see on the left side of his nose he has a scar from a wild dremel attack.

    12. looking awesome so far!

    13. I'll keep checking this thread to see the updates, this looks cool ^^

Good luck with the rest of the modding :D

    14. Stage 5

Just chugging along here. I did several milliput addifications and dremeling today

The last three are what he looks like now. I'm going to do one last session of dremeling tomorrow, post photos and then think on it over the weekend.

    15. As an Apollo owner x3 and an advocate of dremel use, I'm super excited for this mod! Awesome character idea and excellent job on the execution. You're really doing well for a first mod! Keep up the great work and don't let any fears hold you back.

My only suggestion would be once you complete Crow, you're going to have to make Goshawk and Magpie :wiggle

    16. This is looking awesome! I love what you've done here, great work for a first mod.

How are you going to paint him up when you're done? -curious-

    17. Nice. Looking forward to seeing how he turns out.

    18. He's looking awesome! ^^

    19. Very interesting! Neat story and character, can't wait to see more! And I agree with QuearvoS, you're practically required to do Goshawk and Magpie now. XD

    20. You made an amazing job so far. Im really excited about how he will look, when you finished.

    21. Lovely Lovely! I can't wait to see him painted! Be brave you can do it!! ^_^

    22. @ QuearvoS & Mercedes: As fun as this mod has been thus far Magpie and Goshawk are definite possibilities, especially given my favorite passtime of MP browsing lol

@ Chibihaku: I am an indecisive person so I don't know if I'm going to use pastels or paints for his mouth. Not so sure that a combo of the two would work so well (maybe with layering...). But other wise it will be dark eyemake up, black eyeliner, and girly lashes (just think visual kei and we're headed in the same direction).

Thanks everyone for the support so far! :pcake

    23. Here's today's progress. I went along the edges at an angle so they are more of a slope than a sheer drop into the mouth

Plotting several steps ahead and refering to my post just above this, anyone have any opinions about paint vs pastels for the mouth. I was thinking maybe keeping the paint a little thick inside the holes to give it a little taexture, and painting in a circle so its similar to my scribbles lol

    24. Depending on how 'horror' yu want to go, you could mix in a little texturising agent and do a marbled sort of red inside the holes. Add a little gloss and... insta horror!! But I think you definetely need some heavy makeup around the eyes - lots of black eyeliner with dark shadowing.

    25. Interesting mod! I can't wait to see what the finished product will look like. I'll be following your progress :).

    26. I think if you used a bit of both, acrylics first, then pastels, you would get a look closer to your drawings. I love this mod, keep updating because its really cool~

    27. WOW! As someone who really dislikes the BBB Apollo mould, I must say this is FANTASTIC!
I now also know what bothered me about Apollo and it is his original mouth!
Can't wait to see what you do with him!

    28. Awesome!!!!

    29. Thanks for the tips and suggestions chibihaku and IndigoFrogs

I'm glad you liked him SuviFay, mods really do help you see what you (dis)like about sculpts, don't they?

PsYcHo_oTaKu that's one crazy animation! I was like "?" when I first looked then the animation started and I was like O_O very crazy and very awesome

      Everyone:
I've done a little sanding and will take pictures when I have the time but right now is a little hectic for me so there might be a little bit of a wait. I'll have a bunch of free time after next Wednesday.

    30. This is really cool! :D
I'm really looking forward to your updates!

You probably can't see much of a difference but I was sanding. Got some more to do, but I thought I would show some pics to let you all know that I'm still going at it :)

    32. Very interesting concept. :3 He's looking good. I would be scared to death to do this extensive of a mod, but I am very much anticipating seeing him all finished.

The sanding is coming along nicely! You probably won't even notice the milliput after you're all finished.

Out of curiosity, are going to be giving your boy long claws as well like in the sketch?

    33. I was thinking of buying him dikadoll jointed hands, girl ones with the long nails maybe.

    34. oh do! Jointed hands are a lot of fun - my Lief has a pair and I'm strongly tempted to get pairs for all of the others too.

    35. Oh wow, sooo cool! I absolutely adore this mod. Can't wait to see it all done.

    36. This is looking really nice! I agree with Chibihaku--it would definitely be nice to see some heavy black around the eyes. And maybe with the mouth you can put some stray lines or whatnot...or even some blood dripping? owo;

    37. Jumping on on the band wagon here so I can see how he turns out. I love modded Apollo's! :)

    38. This looks fantastic so far!

    39. That would be cool! Do they make the 60cm boy hands with long nails? I know they make the 70cm boy hands with the long nails....

    40. This is really interesting. I really want to see this finished! ^_^ Crow is awesome!

    41. Text only UPDATE

Haven't updated in a while, sorry. I was finishing up my summer courses and moving. But today I finally got back to working on Crown and then I realized that the box with my camera cords are still in my old apartment. So there will be picture updates next week .... but I am working on him and am hoping to be able to start blushing/painting next week as well.

Today I sanded more, then miliputed the area by his nose and built his chin back up a little more. I will sand some more today. The next few days will find me sanding even more so it isn't like there would be interesting photos to share anyways.

    42. He is awesome!!! D:<
Remind me a death eater mask desing (its a compliment xD unless you dont like harry potter) WELL,
Loved that and I want one! >:x
I also wish make some mods but I never can get enough courage to do it.

    43. It's great to know you're still working on him akikazu! Looking forward to the pictures, but take your time - schoolwork always comes first! ^_^

    44. In these two photos you can see that there is a rough area right around the nose.

      I've fixed that
      [IMG]

But, I don't know how well you can see it in the photo, there are obvious lines between the different layers of Milliput. Today I'm hoping to fix that. Although I had hoped to be finished sanding this week, it looks like that won't be happening...

    45. Your work is looking really good. It reminds me why I wanted to get an Apollo for myself. He just seems to have so much potential.

    46. @ Zeta25: Thank you :) I would definitely recommend Apollo, especially if you wanted to try modding a head.

This coming week there will be sanding, and hopefully no more Milliputing, because I really want to paint this head lol...

    47. He looks so awesome, I can't wait to see him painted. :o

    48. Wow how cool!
am really curious about how he'll look finished.

You can see that the left cheek/jaw and right about the right side of the cheek have little areas that need filling in. I'm also have a little troube standing in the mouth holes and around the nose. I'll do a little Milliput work tonight and try to finish sanding tomorrow.

    50. Looking good. I can't wait to see him with his face up.

    51. It's awesome work! I can't wait to see him painted. Good luck!

    52. This reminds me to ask my counselor about getting into Sculpting I.

      SO HANDSOME! ;A; <3

    53. Oh my goodness!
He looks wonderful! I'd be too nervous to mod like this! I can't wait to see the finished product!
*is going to be stalking this thread so badly*

    54. You're doing a fantastic job. I like that you're taking your time with it to get it just right. Kudos!

    55. Hmmm, I'm ready to start on a faceup but I need to account for the difference in color between the Milliput and resin. I don't airbrush so I was thinking maybe spraycan paint?

I didn't really think this part out before hand lol.

    56. don't use spraycan paint! It's a real pain to get back off later and in the process of removing it you can damage the milliput really easily. Plus the texture of the paint (at least the one I used) was terrible for blushing and faceup work. I've heard of people using sponged acrylics to good effect but I haven't tried it.

    57. Glad you replied before I did anything. I guess I could use acyrilic paint... I'd just have to be careful.

    58. I've used sponged on acrylic on barbies to good effect. I'd suggest on resin that you thin it and use as little as possible. Makeup sponges go on pretty smooth. Plus if you hate it it's a lot easier to take off than spraypaint.

    59. So far it looks really interesting. I'm waiting for the next steps of creating him.
