Crochet Crocheting from the DoA archives: Laura Gilkey's SD-sized drawstring purse pattern

Dec 15, 2013

    1. Long, long ago, there were some wonderful patterns posted to the original DoA Yahoogroup, and then imported over to this forum when it got started. As DoA grew and servers changed, those patterns became harder and harder to find. My dear friend SillyDog and I made a project of saving the pattern archive, with the idea of someday adding it to the Wiki or some other part of the forum.

As we have time, we'll post those patterns so everyone can use them! Here's the third one, contributed by the marvelous Laura Gilkey, exactly as she wrote it and with her original picture included. If you use this pattern, please give Laura Gilkey the credit for it!

Fine yarn in a main color and a contrast color
      Small crochet hook

I used fingering weight yarn on an F hook, with a gauge of 6.5 dc per inch. This pattern is somewhat adjustable for gauge, but you should keep it pretty fine.

For the bottom, make a sc medallion as follows:

With main color, ch 4 and join into a loop.
Row 1: Ch 1. Sc 6 into the loop and join with a slipstitch.
Row 2: Ch 1. 2 sc in each sc around. Join.
Row 3: Ch 1. *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. Join.
Row 4: Ch 1. *Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. Join
Continue in this manner, adding one to the number of sc between increases each row. This should make a flat round shape. Continue until the medallion is as wide as the desired bottom of the purse; a 2" diameter is good for a Standard SD.

Once the medallion is the desired width, make sides of purse as follows:

Row 1: Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join.
Row 2: Ch 2. Dc in each sc around. Join.
Row 3: Ch 3. Treble crochet in each dc around. Join.
Row 4: Ch 2. Dc in each treble crochet around. Join.
Rows 5-8: Repeat rows 1-4 once more.
Row 9: Switch to contrast color. Ch 1. (Sc, ch3, sc) in each dc around. Join and fasten off.

      Weave in ends.

With contrast color, make an 8-ply twisted cord. Weave it through the last row of Treble crochets. Tie both ends of the cord, held together, in a knot at the desired length and trim the ends to form a fringe.

And voila! Your doll has a cute drawstring purse!

    2. That is such a cute purse! :aheartbea I definitely think this is a must have accessory for my girls. Thank you for posting the pattern!:dance

    3. Thanks for taking on the project of saving patterns! This is a good simple project. I might use ribbon for the string though. You could add things to it to with hot glue for decoration!
