Ch 3, make 14 dc in ring (15 sts) Join to top of ch 3 Row 2: ch 3, dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in ea dc around (30 sts) Join Row 3: ch 3, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc,dc in ea of next 2 dc*, repeat from * to * around, end with 2 dc in last dc (40 sts) join Row 4: ch 3, dc in next two sts ,2 dc in next st, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st* repeat from * to * around (50sts) Join Row 5-8: ch 3, dc in ea st around (50 sts) join Row 9: ch 5, dc in same st,, skip next dc, *V st of (dc, ch 2, dc) in next st*, skip next st, repeat from * to * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch 5 at beginning of row. (25 V sts) Row 10: (ch3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch 2 of first V st, *V st in next V st, shell in next V st* repeat from * to * around. Join to top of first ch 3 Row 11: sl st in first 2 dc, (ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch 2 sp of first shell, shell in ea ch 2 sp across. Join as before. End off. Run in thread ends. Thread a ribbon through row 6-over two dc and under 2 dc around. Tie in a bow. You can embellish the hat with silk roses, as desired. To stiffen the brim, I used Aileene’s “Stiffen Quik”, which is available at most craft stores.
