(please correct me if this topic has already been addressed) Hi everyone, Recently I've been digging around for more budget-friendly options for hair fibre (excluding yarn) and I keep having the idea of using crochet/braiding hair. it's relatively cheap on Amazon, but I'm curious about the texture and style-ability. From most of the pictures, it seems to look a lot less shiny and a little more coarse than most synthetic hair, which would be perfect if pictures don't deceive. I'm sure that each brand is different, but if you have ever used it for doll projects or for yourself, what are your thoughts? How does it compare with other synthetic hair? Thanks so much in advance!
I havent used it, but if it's more coarse than standard synthetic then it wont scale well for dolls. Already with synthetic you have a problem of the fibers being too coarse- the individual fiber thickness being too thick- for smaller dolls. People use alpaca, mohair, and yarn because the individual fiber thickness is very thin- the hair is very fine- and thus it scales better with dolls. Doll wigs are complicated cause you have to take scale into account as well as other wigmaking techniques. With big dolls human hair and standard synthetic wig fibers can scale ok, but with smaller dolls it starts looking out of scale and you have to use the finer stuff like alpaca and yarn.
Braiding hair is mostly kanekalon hair which is very much like working with nylon hair. Its a bit crinckly in texture but if you use a hot tool on it or poor boiling water on it it becomes straight and shiny like nylon. The matte look is just due to the texture that is put in to have more grip for braiding. It is a bit lighter in weight than nylon though. i find it a bit too coarse for doll hair when you are working with a doll smaller than SD size. And even then its not the best looking. Its easy to hot style, but not that easy to make decent glue wefts from because its very springy and If you use hot glue methods it will work fine, any other slower drying glue might loosen from the cap because of weight before the glue id dry. If you want budget friendly but aren’t that experienced check out premade nylon wefts for doll hair on alieexpress. They are dead cheap and you can easily sew them on a wig cap (which you can buy readymade on ali too) (tutotials for sewn wigs can be found on youtube, dollightfull has a tute on them there) they usually are just 2-3 dollars per one yard weft witch makes one wig. But if you search for milk silk wefts (sometimes also called synthetic mohair but I have seen that term for nylon too) on Ali you get a much softer and better quality material in my opinion, a bit more expensive, about 4-5 dollars per yard but this material can be treated like human hair, can be dyed with wool dyes easily and heat styled with ease. The wigs do become more bulky than a hard pvc glue or latex cap, but comparable to hot glue. In my view that is the best budget friendly wig making material option on the market. And it also comes in loose strands now if you really want to make glued wigs.
Thank you so much for the suggestions! I'll have to look into milk silk wefts-- where do you suggest buying them from?
