Critique on full doll WIP please!

Jul 20, 2023

    1. Hello!
This is my bjd WIP. She is meant to be curvy, having a more realistic body shape. She is about 41cms tall.
I'm getting into the refining process, but she still needs loads of work. For one, a lot of her symmetry is off, including the length of her arms, and legs. Her joints also need a lot of work. She's also missing her head cap. Anatomy has never been my strong point, and I would love her to be somewhat correct regarding proportions. That being said, I would also like to keep a stylized look about her.
Any and all constructive criticism is welcome! Also, feel free to drop any name suggestions ;)

    2. For some reason the name Katrina pops up in my head when I look at this doll which by the way is a nice doll. Do you need to know a lot about sculpting and art to do this?

    3. I like that name!
I think having prior sculpting and art knowledge helps, but I would say practice is the biggest key :)

    4. She's a cool sculpt! I don't know much about sculpture or anatomy either, but I think maybe the belly button is the wrong shape or too large. Sometimes extra belly fat mooshes the belly button ;)

      Shes looking fabulous so far!

    5. Ah, that makes sense. I thought it looked it a little off, and I couldn't quite pin point it. Thank you for your input!

    6. She looks fabulous! I think the ankles and wrists can be a bit skinnier, and maybe the upper arms a little bit thicker. Just an observation when I looked up plus size bodies.

    7. That's a good point- I didn't catch that! Thank you!

    8. I really like the overall style and appearance of your sculpt. I think it has a good harmony, is pleasing, and has a good mix of realism and stylization.

Do you look up anatomy reference while sculpting? Because that's what I would recommend if anything feels off to you. I like her prominent belly button however I agree that most likely the shape would be different. Often you see it compressed into more of an oval shape or with a bit of a frown for a navel that has creases on a heavier stomach.

I also think the folds of fat on the back are positioned much too low. That's really the only thing I'd say bothers me a lot anatomically. Perhaps there is noteable exception but the folds on the back tend to come between lower shoulder blade and waist. It's possible to have them differently for different reasons (such as extra skin folds from extreme rapid weight loss) but at and above the natural waist seems to be where they occur from body movements and shape.

There is definitely no overarching plus size body in my opinion. They come in an array of shapes and proportions, and it's not uncommon for part of the shape to be consistent with a common issues. Many plus size bodies are in great physical fitness (think of a recent article I read about Lizzo's performance ability) but many others have problems. So on that note I like the stocky lower legs and ankles. It's somewhere between being stylized and resembling a mild edema, which is not uncommon with age and extra pounds.

Personally, as the doll is stylized and once again... Body varieties... I like her upper arms the size they are. People collect fat in different places. I see a lot of plus sized models with arms that look proportionally slim, and my own arms for example are always large (a huge insecurity). I think as you go into refining the sculpt from here you have to decide what level of realism you favor and be consistent with you idea of how you want her to look.

I think she's really beautiful and excellent work to get her to this point!

    9. I don't know what kind of stylization you have in mind, so take this with a grain of salt, but the hands look a touch too large in proportion to the body and arms to me. They also look a bit larger than the feet, which might be what's throwing it off.

That said, I love what you've done so far. You did an amazing job!

    10. Now there's a familiar body type (mine)! This is looking really great so far and I'm loving the look! As others have mentioned the belly button is a bit too round. You can fix that by bringing the top of it down a bit, perhaps a millimeter. For my two cents as a 2D animation major, I'd suggest adding a little bit more to the calves on the lower legs and round them out a smidge. And perhaps round out those cheeks on her booty. She's looking great so far and I can't wait to see how she comes out! :D

    11. To double check, it wouldn't hurt to find a picture of a skeleton and super impose it over a photo. It gives you an idea where everything should be as far as proportions go.

A lot of people have already mentioned, fat deposits different, so some people have all belly and think legs, some don't carry much at all and have the "cankle" look any way. It all depends how you want it to look, so adjust as you see fit. It's a doll, it'll never be 100% so just make sure it's a doll your happy working on.

Since you said you're refining, take what I say with a grain of salt, cause you might already have plans to do so, but I would suggest shaving the ankles down a bit for a smoother transition. It's less actual accuracy but more of the "looks right" to the eye. You could even shave down the wrists to give the arms a bigger appearance. Even the neck a little bit could help emphasize her size. It's all suggestions since you said semi realism.

I am loving the thighs <3
