Critique on an anthro head.

Apr 15, 2012

    1. Hello all! I just joined the forum and I figured I would ask for some critique on my work. I started working on my doll 3 days ago and so far I managed to get a head done. This is literally the first thing I sculpted other than small things like polymer clay jewelry so I would really appreciate advice on how to improve from the more experienced dollmakers here :D. The doll I'm sculpting is supposed to be a Cat anthro and I'm making it out of super sculpey. Thanks in advance :D

Here are some picture... I apologize for the poor quality, my only camera is attached to my phone.

    2. hoooo yeah, if this is your first attempt, I can't wait to see what you do next 8D She's really cute~

Her front proportions indicate that she is a kitten, is that right? In that case, I think you might want to consider the profile of her nose. Most kittens have a very dainty shape there, I think? https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1...f.,cf.osb&fp=f4220ab1bed54d3&biw=1280&bih=663 <- there's a pretty clear forehead curve, then a quick turn, then a dainty dainty snout curve. And then kittens can grow out of this shape, if the adult cat has straighter profile lines, but kittens have curves here.

Another part that gives me concern is the outer brow bones. I think you might want to shave back that area a bit...? It's a bit hard to tell from w/o a 3/4 view, though.

But she looks super super cute~ Good luck~

    3. Thanks so much for the advice penguu! :D... I did sand down the brows and the nose bridge a bit and the head shape really came together a lot nicer, especially with the head cap on. Then I stuck on a wig and some eyes just to see how it would look, both are a bit too small and she looks a bit weird without ears I have yet to make, but I think I'm getting somewhere :D. Here's a picture.[IMG]

    4. Wow!! Very nice job!! I don't really have any critique about it :)

    5. the pupil sizes are still within reason, I think? Are gaps showing around the eyes?

Pupil sizes vary between eye makers. You might be able to find something in the same eye size, but with bigger pupils?

      You cat head looks lovely~

    6. The eyes she has in are pretty gappy. They're 16mm eyes I stole from my Zuzu delf woong, since that's all I had available (I only have 2 dolls with me so far, both take 16mm eyes, I've only discovered the BJD hobby a few months ago) but I did order 18mm eyes online a few days ago so I hope those will fit better. I set the head aside now and decided to wait on working on the ears since I'm still not sure of the size/style I want, so I began working on the torso. That has been a horrible and frustrating experience in trying to make it hollow and the sculpey cracking on me, and i'm beginning to see why most people use other clays, but i'm slowly getting somewhere lol.

    7. super sculpey...I just build everything solid with it XD;

    8. :D I love how clean the inside of her head looks. :D the last picture in the first post is just too cute.

    9. it looks like her eyes might be sitting a little too much at an angle... more of a \ shape when looking from the top than you want. i can't tell from the photos. it's something i have trouble with in my heads and it ends up causing the doll to be wall-eyed and the eyes to not sit in the eyewell correctly.

If you don't have the correct sized eyes you can always get ball bearings or beads in the size you want just so you can build the eyewell up while you wait on eyes. :3

      she's super cute looking XD

    10. Thanks for the advice Sarah(and I must say I'm sort of honored you commented on my works since pretty much the reason I started sculpting my doll was because I stumbled upon your youtube tutorials while looking for bjd videos :D)! I looked at the eyes and you were right, so I ended up redoing a good part of the head to get them straighter. I also made the eyewells a lot smaller and fit them to the 18mm eyes I had so they're a lot easier to put in now which makes me happy. I've spent pretty much the whole weekend working on this doll so I figured I'd share some pictures in case anyone has more advice :D [IMG]
This is what is(mostly done so far) no hands yet and i'm dragging my feet on the arms because they seem really challenging :P

the head with ears... kind of a bad angle because I had trouble trying to keep the ears in place and take a photo at the same time lol.

    12. I just stumbled on this and I love the way the doll looks. I wish I could see the finished doll. Did you end up finishing it?
