Aesthetics critique for practice head face ups

Nov 13, 2020

    1. Materials used: cheap make up brush set, mungyo soft pastels, nail art liner brush with watercolor paints, gloss vanish, trimmed drug store falsies, tacky glue. Please keep in mind I don't have an airbrush when giving advice.

Base blank head doll family-a karl.

First. I didn't really have a plan in mind other than I wanted to do something natural and try putting eyelud creases which I want quite sure how to do in a sculpt that didn't have any. I also tried putting in a little smirk, but I think it's too subtle.

Next. I wanted to do a more feminine face but still natural looking face up, but this time I tried following along a Tianba youtube video. And I accomplished neither of them... Eyes too purple, lower lashes too long, brows too clean.

I think I would like most pointers on how to do eye lid creases and eye make up as I've no personal experience with either of them on myself.

    2. These are really beautiful! I especially like the 2nd one. I actually like the purple and the long eyelashes even though that’s not what you were going for. The only suggestion I can think of to make would be to thin out your paints a bit more to get cleaner lines.

    3. I like the result a lot! Maybe the only thing I can point out is that the bluish shadow in the eye inside corner part feels a little "flat", I don't know how to explain honestly :XD:

    4. Oh, these are lovely! I love the colors you used for both lips, it looks very natural. The eyebrow hairs (and eyelashes too) fall really naturally.

I would agree with Shiro above that it seems like your paint consistency might be giving your lines sort of an inconsistent weight. Are you using watercolor pencils for your lines? They unfortunately sometimes give that sort of effect.

I'd also say (and this may be a matter of opinion, so YMMV) that the pastel around the eyes seems like it could go a little darker, just to emphasize the features and give the face more depth. Especially on the more feminine one, those long lower lashes would really pop if they had more of an implied "shadow" beneath them.

    5. You are really good at lines. those eyebrows are to die for ^^

It's amazing you can take the same mold and give a girl and a boy. Sorry, I don't have any critique per se. Just suggest learning to make freckles or textures. ^^

    6. You did I great job! I would talk about symmetry, but then again, no one's face is perfectly symmetrical. I noticed the smirk on the male before I read your post, I think it's a really cute touch! The female face-up looks more glamorous than natural to me. In the pic with the wig, it looks like she has less eyeshadow and lighter lips. I don't know if it's the same face with different lightning but that looks more natural.
