Aesthetics Critique for a First Faceup?

Apr 19, 2019

    1. Hey everyone!

I'm just about ready to wrap up my doll's face-up with a final coat of MSC and then some varnish, so I just wanted to post here in case there was something that I could add or improve on. This is a first time for me so I was thinking you guys might have a better idea of what was done well and what could use some more work. My main concern is the freckles are a bit too dark?? What are your thoughts?? A big thank you in advance!

    2. They may be a bit on the dark side for the more light/fair face he has going. Also I might suggest a more "random" freckling technique? It seems like they are bit uniform looking, while freckles tend to be more sporadic in nature.

Other than that, it looks really good for a first time faceup! Ouo you seem to have a good technique going and I am impressed with your brow work. Brows are my mortal enemy lol definitely keep at it! :)

    3. Thank you so much!! :whee:I agree and I definitely will be going back and lightening some of them freckles up... I just dotted them on using a very fine paintbrush, so it makes sense they'd look a bit more uniform than say if I sprayed them on using the tip of a brush. I was a bit afraid to do that because I wanted to keep the freckles concentrated on the blushed areas... not sure if that in itself will give the freckles a bit too uniform of a look though...

    4. You can keep them from going in areas you don't want them in by covering the face with your hand or a piece of paper as you do the spraying. It'll give you both the more natural look of the random freckles and the control over where they go.

That said, I think it looks very good! Perhaps blend the lips in a tiny bit more? But it's very natural looking overall and the eyebrows look very nice too. Great job! :)

    5. I really like the freckles, though I agree that they don't look "random" enough for natural freckles. I have fair skin and freckles on my shoulders that are about as dark as these, so I don't think they're unaturally dark.

I would also suggest coloring the lips a bit more. You could get a pretty nice effect if you carried the fade all the way to the ends of the lip area. It would help the lips look more natural. However, if that is the look you are wanting, then don't let me take that from you. "Natural" and "accurate" only matter as much as they matter to you.

    6. I rip a hole in a paper towel and use that to control my spray zone. Then I use a damp bit of the same or a clean cloth to either remove or fade out freckles that landed too dark, large, or in undesired places. I keep the paint thin so the effect is subtle, and do most of the face, spreading a greater concentration of slightly darker freckles across the bridge of the nose and cheeks.

The brows look quite good to me and have a nice shape. I agree with carrying the lip blush out further, even if you keep it very faint. The sculpt has such a strong lip line that it looks a little unfinished without something there. (Unless you’re trying to visually minimize the size of his lips?)

I think he could use some eyelashes. Even if faint or sparse, nearly all of us have them.

Though it’s very much a matter of taste, and could be affected by the lighting, I also think the colours chosen for his blush and lips read as very orange. Maybe this will be balanced more when he’s got a wig. If you do it again sometime you might consider mixing in more pinks and browns. Of course disregard depending on your intent. :) overall I think it looks really workable and great for a first try.

    7. Thank you! I'll be sure to try that the next time I do a faceup. Another thing I'm worried about is the size of the freckles. I guess the best way to do this would just be to try on a piece of paper first before attempting to spray it directly on the doll.

    8. Thanks for this!! I'll definitely take you up on your suggestion to bring the faded colour up on the lips - I was going for a natural look and couldn't really pin down what was slightly off about it. To be completely honest I thought the sculpt of the lips were a bit too pronounced for the character I was attempting to shell but I guess trying to downplay it made it look slightly off and less natural..:sweat

    9. Thank you for the suggestions!! You're right, I think the colours do seem really orange at least in that photo. Great eye! :thumbup Was taking these on my phone so the quality is pretty questionable and I didn't want to photo manipulate.... Speaking of which, she's supposed to have red hair so I'm really hoping the reds from the wig would balance out the slightly more orange hues on her cheeks. :3nodding:

I do plan on adding eyelashes as soon as they come in... I've been waiting forever for them to arrive in the mail... :sigh
I worry that the eyelashes would look slightly too girly on her (she's supposed to be a more traditionally masculine character) but I guess that's a worry for another time.

    10. To make the lips a bit less pronounced, you can definitely keep the color really soft and not too dark. They should appear smaller if the brightest/darkest part is towards the center of them. I really love the look of this face-up and I can't wait til you have this guy done!

    11. I think you understand the areas that needed to be highlighted. I put some color on the lips. There is too big a demarcation I find of course.

Have you changed anything since? : D

    12. When I did freckles, before doing any blushing, I "sprayed" them on with a paint brush, then I rubbed any dots back off that I didn't want anywhere else on the face (since it was paint, I could wipe them back off with a damp piece of paper towel).

After that, then I began blushing. Not only did it keep the freckles random and concentrated on the areas I wanted, but adding the blush after the freckles gave them a softer, more "fleshy" look, and it made them look a whole lot more natural.

    13. I agree with what people have said about the freckles! I used the paint spraying technique on my girl, and I think it worked really nicely. Depending on the look you're going for, you can do it under or over the blushing. I did mine as a finishing touch.

This is what it looked like in the end:

I also think you're right about the lips needing a bit more colour, and I would think about adding some more blushing in the areas of his face that would be darker - for instance the inner corners of the eyes and eyelids, the nostrils, and around the nose a little. You can also try using some colours that may seem a bit counter intuitive, like blues or greens, to get a more realistic look! Look at photographs of people and you'll notice there are a lot of colours in there :)

He's looking gorgeous and I'm sure you'll only improve even more with practice![/CENTER]
