Materials Creative Paperclay Vs Das?

Dec 24, 2021

    1. Hi! This is my very first post(? Forum?) so I really hope that I do get responses :D Anyways I've been in the hobby for a while but only very recently have I started making a list of what to buy to start sculpting BJDs. I know I should have waited to order the proper materials online, but I recently went to Hobby Lobby and just bought one package of DAS, one package of Creative Paperclay and some sculpting tools on a whim. I heard that the Creative Paperclay is good for larger parts or dolls, but it's prone to cracking and you should something else for details. I heard DAS is good, but kinda coarse. Overall, I've heard the same amount of pros and cons for both, so I was wondering which is better?

I plan to just keep practicing heads at first since I'm almost sure that's what'll I'll be the weakest at and bodies would take up too much clay. I was thinking of making the head the size of a 1\4 head, but I don't have the measurements for that so does anyone have them or know where I can find them?

I think that's it (this is getting too long). Thank you!

    2. This sort of thing has a lot to do with personal preference. Both clays can be used and as you have already found they both have their pros and cons.
You can try out both and see witch one you like better.

Most companies will post basic measurements such as circumference for their heads as that is an important masurement for buying wigs. You can look around for that to get an idea for what sizes are common for the styles of heads that are closest to what you want to make.
Note the neck circumference as well if you intend to make a fully functional head that can be put on an existing body. (That will require casting, though as the air dry clay is not strong enough to withstand the tension of a regular BJD.)
Another thing you can do is to make a full size blueprint of a full doll, even if you don't intend to make the body yourself you can get a much better idea of actual size and proportions that way. another option is to make something like a simple cloth doll body in the right size to work as a place holder and something to try out the head with as you work. Having some sort of full size visual reference can help a lot.

      Best of luck!
