The previous chapter takes place a few hours before this one, and can be seen HERE... Maxim: DUKE! There you are! Duke: Oh, shit. Maxim: What did you do, you little weasel?? Trevor: Wait... what's going on?! Duke: I swear, I didn't do anything! Maxim: What did you say to her?? I'll wring your neck! Duke: Maxim! I didn't tell her anything she didn't already know! Don't! Trevor: Stop it! Not in this office! You will not do this here! Stop, Maxim!! Take your hands off him! Maxim: You little shit! If you played one of your FILTHY little games with her -- Duke: Filthy?? You make me sound like a pervert. Trevor: STOP IT RIGHT NOW! This is a place of business, and you will BOTH conduct yourselves appropriately, or GET OUT! Do you HEAR ME?? Marjorie: *to herself* What in the world... ? Trevor: Now you will both calmly and civilly tell me what is going on! Maxim: It's none of your business, Trevor! Trevor: YOU brought it into my office, therefore it IS my business! And we are going to clear this mess up. Maxim: He treated Maura like a cheap piece of trash by seeing another woman while he was dating her! Duke: Hey! I don't date people exclusively! I just wanna hang out and have a good time. Why does it matter just because it's a girl and not one of the guys? Maxim: What you call "hanging out" with women isn't just hanging out! It's disrespectful! How can you treat her like that? Or any woman?! Duke: It's not like it's a secret! I've done that since I first started dating, and you KNOW it! She knew it too! Maxim: That's no excuse! He -- Trevor: Stop! Both of you, STOP! *sighh* Maxim... unfortunately, he's right. He's told every person he's ever dated beforehand. And Maura's known for years. Trevor: None of that from you, Duncan! Wipe that smirk off your face. Duke: Smirk? What smirk? There was no smirk. Trevor: You already know I don't approve of your habits. It's only the fact that you're up front and honest about it that keeps me from criticizing you more. And I still wish you would change your behaviour. I agree with Maxim, it's disrespectful to the women you go out with. But any woman who decides to be serious about you deserves whatever she gets. Luckily, no woman ever HAS been serious about you. Trevor: Now, Maxim... Maura's a grown woman, she can take care of herself. And you can't say it was a surprise to her. Maxim: *pauses* Hmph... Trevor: And Duncan, I would strongly recommend that you reconsider how you treat women in the future. Duke: *sulky* I'll do what I want. Trevor: All right then. You'll have to deal with the consequences of your actions, and you'd better hope that the next person you piss off is as understanding as Maxim is. The two of you have been friends too long to let something like this come between you. Maxim: You're talking about MAURA, not "something". Trevor: All right, all right, I'm sorry. Maxim, I know you're still angry, but... I hope you'll forgive Duncan. I don't expect you to do it now. Maxim: *grudgingly* I will... eventually. Trevor: Good. Duncan, you'd better leave. Duke: *protesting* But I was here first! Trevor: NOW. Don't say another word. Maxim needs to cool off a little before he drives anywhere. I'll talk to you later. Trevor: Feel better? Maxim: Not really. Trevor: Hmm, I guess you weren't kidding when you said you didn't want to see who Maura's dating. Maxim: Dammit... that's exactly what it was, wasn't it? Trevor: Seems like it. Maxim: Dammit. Trevor: Look. I'm not defending Duncan. I disapprove of his habits more than anyone. But... you know what he's like. Besides, they broke up. He just told me she won't see him any more. Maxim: I know, Maura told me she dumped him. Trevor: She told you already? Maxim: Yes. And I should be happy about it, shouldn't I? But I hate seeing her so upset. THAT'S what made me angry. I hate that he made her upset. I want her to be happy.
Trevor: Do you think she'll be over it soon? Maxim: Oh, probably. Duke's no prize, we know that. And... I suppose the next guy will be along soon enough. Hopefully someone I DON'T know. Trevor: Maxim, I'm sorry. Maxim: I'm a basket case, aren't I? Anyway... I'm out of here, before you have to turn me into a patient. Trevor: Maxim -- Trevor: Hmm.... I think I see what the problem is... Linda S. galatia9
