Moldmaking Creating a mold from 3D printing - outsource it someone or try to make it yourself?

Oct 29, 2019

    1. Hello! I just created a 3D design of the BJD head that I want to print in 3D and then make a mold and cast it from resin. I just wonder if such a mold can be made at home? Made of silicone? Should I use different material? Does it harm health like resin casting? I will be grateful for your tips - by the way, how exactly do you cast your resin dolls? Do you use any masks, because from what I read, the resin is harmful to health?
I would like to create my first doll, but apart from the project I don't know how to do it from the technical side...
I read various DIY, but I still have a lot of questions.
Thank you in advance for your help! ^^

    2. To answer the health questions, It comes down to what products you're using. I believe most are toxic [check the product's back for warnings and instructions always] and should be used along with a lot of room ventilation and a filtered mask. Even if you were just to have a ventilated room, you can still really harm your health so please do take the expense to buy a filtered mask before doing any work that involves resin, silicone, finishes, etc. [As many are indeed heavily toxic.] Hope this helps, albeit not much!

Check this forum post for some more information for respiratory protection!
      Best of luck!

    3. Yes you can cast it in resin, but you'll need to prepare it first. 3d printed pieces have some small grooves from the building process, so you'll have to sand and primer it to get a smooth finish. A smoother finish makes it easier to make a silicone mold out of it.

    4. Thank you! I read the topic and found some answers to my question.
Thank you also for your tips, LilaAIP. Most likely, the prototype will be printed from the resin in SLA technology.

    5. I made silicone molds from a 3D printed master that was sanded and primed with Tamiya surface primer. It was actually pretty easy to do, as far as acquiring materials and mixing the silicone :) Make sure to watch some YouTube videos on mold-making to get ideas of where you should put the vents (for when you pour resin into the mold) and how to orient your master so that air bubbles will release easily. That's something I would definitely change if I were to do this again! I ended up carving the vents after the fact. It was a pain in the butt, and their placement really wasn't great.

    6. Thank you, this is a really helpful post - I will read about creating a mold. :)

    7. There's some videos on youtube how someone created molds for their bjd, I just looked up 'Bjd mold making' and there was a few showing how to make a two part mold and time lapse of them making a mold
