[Adopted] CP Delf Discussion Part 8

May 20, 2014

1. Ah, the Delf body Types...
It sounds like a complicated thing, but it's really not so bad.

Type 1s are very old-school. They have single joints, plain round holes at the base of the heads and are held together with Ye Olde S-Hooks that attach to a loop of resin on the underside of the head cap. Male and female Type 1s have necks/neck-holes that are different sizes. The girls' are a fair bit smaller than the guys', making some mods necessary if you want to make something like a Type 1 female Elf Yder or male DES.

Type 2s are still pretty old-school joint-wise. They're simple single-joint just like the Type 1s, but the heads and bodies are connected differently. Type 2s have an extra resin "key" part at the top of the neck (The hook holding their elastic is part of that mechanism-) that goes into the base of the head and turns to hold it in place. The head holes are a funky shape to accommodate that key mechanism rather than being the plain round hole Type 1s have. Instead of their head caps being held by the doll's s-hook and the tension of the elastic, you turn them to put them on or take them off. The other change that came along with the Type 2s was giving the guys' and gals' necks the same diameter at the top, making it really easy to swap between bodies if you want to make a cross-gender doll like a male Lishe or a female Shiwoo.

Type 3s are odd ducks. They have the same head-key connectors that the Type 2s have, but their joints are a little different. They're still basically single-jointed, but extra plate-like bits were added to the knees and elbows to make the joints look a little less gappy when they're at sharp angles. Personally, I don't think they help all that much from a practical posing point of view, but they were an interesting addition appearance-wise.

Size-wise, Type 1s tend to be a little taller and a little heavier than Type 2s... particularly the older, pre-2006 Type 1s... but there is some variation, depending on how old the mold was that any one body came from. Type 3s are pretty much all smaller and lighter than their Type 1 and 2 siblings.

Also, with a little kit-bashing you CAN attach a Type 2 head to a body without the key mechanism. Just use two of those resin "doughnut" pieces (Having one with the gap facing forward on top of another with the gap facing backwards seems to be the most secure arrangement-) to hold the s-hook. The funky shape of the Type 2 neck hole supports the doughnut pieces pretty well, and the tension of the elastic will hold it all together. (I have several done like that over here, and no one has ever lost a head. )

Putting a Type 1 head on a Type 2/3 body is even easier. Just restring the body with a regular s-hook in place of the key mechanism and you're good to go. Keep the difference in neck diameter on the girls in mind, though. A Type 1 girl with her narrow little neck hole may end up looking like a pumpkin sitting on top of a fence-post due to the wider neck of the newer bods.

2. I had that problem, putting together a Chiwoo girl, such a huge head that the neck hole actually was big enough to engulf the whole neck and the head sat on the shoulders instead of the neck. I had no idea the necks were not the same size, and got quite the shock.

3. DenaliWind, Minerva and Brightfires, thank you! :D It looks like my boy is the Type 1 body, so it'll be a pretty familiar setup for me. I may swap his body later, so I'll keep the differences in mind for that, too. You all explained it very well!

4. Yep.... Been there. Done that. XD

With me it was Sannru, my Elf Yder girl. Lucky for me, the Type 2 bods came out not long after I got her and that was the answer to my problem.

5. I haven't done that (lucky me) my silly move was thinking that Type 1 bodies can take a neck mechanism.... which because of the difference in female neck sizes pre and post the massive s-hook residing in the neck, they can't!

It was extremely fun... especially when it came time to try and get that s-hook back out of the Type 1's neck... it had jammed inside and I'm amazed I didn't break the poor girl's neck!

Btw - some people will also use the Type 1/Type 2 distinction to differentiate between the torso jointed and hip jointed bodies of the female Delfs - but you're better off just using "torso joint" and "hip joint". I don't know if the hip jointed body comes with Type 1 heads (as I believe it was released as a "Type 2" with the neck mechanism); but the torso jointed girls can be both Type 1 and Type 2 in regards to necks.

6. If there's that much of a difference, you might have to put a couple of layers of heavy plastic (like milk jug type plastic) inside the head to support the S-hook. That will keep it from sliding through.

7. That's an awesome idea... I just thought of buying a neck piece for my d.shiwoo since the hole is gigantic but that sounds more convenient.

8. You can always do a permanent mod. My Chiwoo came to me modded so he can attach with an S-hook. Which was convenient since I bought him for a body that's not a Delf. It's not so pretty on the inside, but totally functional.

9. I'm ok modding others but I don't think I'll be modding my delf heads any time soon. I think I've seen a couple of those in the mp

10. I usually use metal washers on most of my dolls to have some added neck-joint poseability anyway, but depending on the size of the hole a washer might not be enough. I did the piece of plastic thing on a Leeke tiny whose S-hook kept falling through when I moved her head. Those plastic caps from milk jugs or soda bottles will work too if the hole isn't huge. Punch a hole through the middle and thread the elastic through it.

As long as it's sturdy enough and covers the neck hole, you should be good. :)

11. Re: Girl body joints... The hip joints didn't come along until the Type 2s were introduced. They sent those out as the default for awhile when those bodies were new, but eventually switched over to mostly shipping a waist-jointed version like the Type 1s. (Essentially, it was the Tan Lishe version of the Type 2 body-) By the time the line was discontinued, it was darn near impossible to get them to send you the hip-joint version, even by specific request. They never actually said anything about formally abandoning that design, but getting ahold of one was like pulling teeth.

I always wondered why they only did a "Mature" Type 2 female bod, myself... The Type 1s had both a Mature body and a regular girl bod with slightly less boobage. Type 2s never got that option... and they never got around to making a Type 3 female body at all, as far as I can remember.

12. I'd say they'd probably made a "Type 3" girl... but never released it... the jointing was there and they'd tested it, since it's the same joints the Feeple70 has. But you're right, it is a strange thing that they never made a smaller boob after the originals - perhaps the smaller boob body didn't sell well?

13. Since the unique, limited-to-5-in-the-world, characteristic of your DES is her specific artist face-up, I'd be hesitant to wipe/mod her, since unlimited versions of DES were available.

Perhaps you could see if someone wanted to do a head trade with a blank head, or one with an unlimited face-up? I know that Anarchy in Heaven DES is a very rare treasure, and you could probably do a trade and make a profit, especially if you were planning on just using the head on a body from a different maker.

-- A <3

14. I have a question regarding bodies and what not......
Breakaway 05 I'm assuming goes on the type one body ? Which would be just a simple S-hook right ?
The body I bought....I think is a type 2 modded to be a type one, so that would mean they just took off the mechanism and set it up with an S-hook ?
Just wondering if I have to order the neck mechanism thing in a GO or not......

15. can anyone supply me with a picture of a shiwoo next to a harang? preferably straight shot and profile XD
debating if I should buy a slightly modded harang head as a sister or something... they look very similar to me cept the eyes |D

16. The first-release Breakaways are Type 1 heads. You don't need a Type 2 connector piece for them.

RE: Harangs and Shiwoos, I don't have time to take a picture of mine together tonight, but I should be able to do that tomorrow.

17. Great thanks :3

18. thanks, I've been wibbling on buying the harang but if they look as similar as I think they do... well... :)

19. I've got my boy home now, and gotten a firsthand look at the Type 1 head! Turns out it's actually the dreaded (to me) "hook-to-headcap" style, though he's so loose and floppy that it's not a challenge to pull his headcap back right now. I had to chase down the mailman to get him (literally, though he admitted he should have knocked louder), and didn't get to open him until after dark, but he's so pretty! :D

[IMG]A new attempt at big dolls! by vicemage, on Flickr

I'm hoping if this size sticks to swap him to an F60 body in the future, though, which sounds like it's going to take some effort (unless all the Shiwoo heads are available as Type 2, since I kind of want the threesome of OE/SP/Dreaming for this character). He's cute enough that I may well find the ways to make it work!

20. Aww, he's cute, vicemage! :D

21. Hook to headcap ? Oh dear >.< I may have problems with that too
He does look lovely though, congrats on getting him :3

22. AlmySidaKay: It's probably terrible of me to say this...but I think I would have just about died laughing if that ever happened to me.

Congrats, vicemage! I love Shiwoos.

23. Shiwoos are love. ^_^

All three of the regular heads were made in both Type 1 and Type 2, so you're good there. It was just the open-eyed and sleeping Elf Shiwoo limited heads that never got an update or re-release.

24. Strangely enough, I never saw the appeal of Shiwoo when I first got into the hobby, and now I can't get enough of that face! :D (I already have a LTF Shiwoo, and an incoming MNF Shiwoo... somehow so far I've resisted the PKF one but who knows what will happen there!) I'm so glad I took another look at him, I really do love this sculpt now!

And thanks, Brightfires! That's good to know!

25. Take an extra little piece of elastic, thread it through wherever the S-hook should attach to the headcap, and knot it off. Fasten it to the S-hook, and you should be good to open and close it without breaking fingers.

26. You can try to resist the PKF. You can try. And if you succeed, more power to you; I am weak, and Shiwoo in any size is too freaking cute to resist. I noticed my Yder's Type 2 body is definitely heavier than my best friends' Type-3 body. I ended up using a resin washer around his neck and he has a pretty good range of motion.

I have a very old Luts Soo with the attachment/hook in the headcap. She's just a floating head for now until I figure out what I want to do with her, but her head is much bigger than the Jesse floating head I have, and the Yder's. I was really surprised.

27. The later heads (Jess, Edgar, Lu Wen) are definitely smaller than their earlier cousins... That's why my Lu Wen ended up being a girl. The head even looked small on a Type 3 bod. o_0

28. Right!? Seeing it in person was a surprise.

I will say this for Luts resin, or at least mine, once you restring them, give them a good cleaning, they look like new.

29. The Normal skin CP resin does hold up pretty well... I was a lot less impressed with their White, though. I ended up with a few too many of those infamous "Beauty Green" dolls... <_<

30. I love my BW Elf Lishe... even if she is starting to go a tad green after 7 years. It does make me want to stay away from getting any more white skin CP dolls though... unless I found a great Juri 05.. I could make WS work for her. :)

31. Oh that's great advice ! Hopefully I'll be able to string him okay, I've done a B& doll so it's pretty much the same...but with extra parts.
I can see me spending hours doing this then having to undo it all to send him to the faceup artist >.<

32. Minerva, that's a great tip! I'll keep that in mind when I do my own restringing (since I'm not fond of the hook-to-headcap system myself), though I think I'm going to need to order up some elastic first.

Faerie_Speak, for now I'm holding out on the PKF... if they add the El sculpt into the PKF line, though, then I'm definitely sunk, since I love the look of Shiwoo and El together (have them in LTF size and hoping to add a big El down the road). But at least for now, I'm resisting!

I'm glad to hear the NS cleans up so well, too; once I get some elastic, I'll be going to town with some alcohol and dish soap on this boy!

33. For the bw/bg peeps, would sanding the surface help get rid of that or is the greening all through the whole resin?

34. I tried both lightly sanding one of mine and the oxy-treatment, and neither made much of a difference. I'm pretty sure that green tone goes all the way through. It can help a doll that's only got a bit of surface yellowing, though.

35. I got really lucky with my BGs, the greenest one I had now looks fantastic after a clean and a new face up. I have another I want to get re-faceuped since I noticed she was green (wig changes can be fraught with danger when you don't realise one of your dolls is BG) and I just got a brand new one (to me anyway) who is an 05, but doesn't look green... at least so far.

So it can all be a bit hit and miss - all my NS dolls look fab even though they'd probably all be yellowed - I actually like the "mellowed" look of the older CP NS.

vicemage
- I'd love to see a PKF El, and a PKF Lishe - I've asked for them before, but nothing has happened. I have a soft spot for PKF and an even bigger one for the Lishe/El sculpt (and Breakaway... how adorable would a PKF BA look??).

As for BG dolls - this is my "before and after" for my girl Nemain - she was the most green I had (until I changed the wig on my 06 Elf) and I sent her off to get a new face up. She doesn't look anywhere near as green as she used to.
[IMG]Now & Then: Nemain by TeaPartyRevolution, on Flickr

36. Having seen the green BW of Luts in person, it did put me off of buying a BW Luts for sure. But the NS does seem to hold up well. My Yder is from 2007 and aside from broken fingers I managed to reglue without issue-- Gorilla Glue, for real; no residue and I forget which hand was broken-- he's still pretty awesomesauce. Just needs to be restrung. There's something about the Luts resin that just sort of makes you want them more and more.

Minerva-- That is such awesome advice-- thank you!

37. Well I got the body through, had "fun" stringing it.
I think I did it right....He stands at least.
Now to wait for the head to see if they match >.<

38. Hmm... so mixed results with treatments or sanding to get rid of greening? Teapartyrevolution is yours only basic cleaning and faceup or did she get some light sanding?
The shade of green my shiwoo heads doesn't really bother me much but it sure does make hybriding a little more difficult

39. As promised, I have a couple of Shiwoo vs. Harang pictures here. I popped the boys' wigs off just to make it easier to see the shape of their faces and such.

Here they are from the front...
... and in profile.

You didn't mention which type of Shiwoo you wanted (There are some slight differences between the Type 1s and Type 2s, as seen here. Type 2s are a bit thinner-cheeked.), so I just used Harumatsu, my older Type 1.

'Couldn't resist a little bonus spam of him, since it's been a dog's age since I had him in front of a camera.

My first, and still my favorite. ^_^

40. I want a Beauty Green doll. I paint my dolls weird colours already. One that comes greenish would be awesome! :D

You're welcome. :) I used to do this all the time with my older Volks dolls because their headcaps attach to the S-hooks. These newfangled magnet systems are such a miracle.

You want to look for a thinner gauge elastic. Even regular "bead elastic" (from Michael's, Joann's, etc) will work if you double it over. It gives just enough slack to pop the headcap to one side and change eyes or whatever. No more bruised fingers!

41. I'd die if Fairyland released a PKF El. I have the Shiwoo in each size, so would love an El. I don't own an El in MNF but in LTF. I adore the Delf side by side as well as a LTF.

42. Minerva, I've definitely got all kinds of elastic around here (just sadly nothing good for stringing this boy, the best "doll elastic" I have is the shock cord for my BBB/RS kids), so I'll pull out some of that and use it on his head when I redo him!

Brightfires, your boy is beautiful! :D

43. ughhh they are very similar... now i kinda do want a harang head as a sibling XD
And thanks for the pictures. Is the type 1 and type 2 difference the reason why it looks like my d.shiwoo is a little wider on the cheeks than my t.2 shiwoo? the d.shiwoo is a t.1 head with the head cap loop for the s-hook >_<
your shiwoos are :aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea esp. your tan shiwoo mah god wow

AND MY LISHE IS HERE...:sumomo:
too bad no one was home and now i have to go pick her up tomorrow at the post office :doh
Lucky enough to find a Lishe pre2006 on fb, can't wait to see her

44. I don't think my girl was sanded at all - I didn't do her face up, it was done by AngelToast (elisa_maza), who does a fantastic job. I think it was mostly just the removal of the face up and a clean. I definitely hope she wasn't sanded, since she's a pretty rare unmodded Vampire Elf Lishe from the 2004/2005 release - but I honestly doubt it, her face up artist wouldn't do that without telling me or asking me first.

The green tones can be very relative in person - both me and my friend LK, who has an incredibly green Vampire Shiwoo, did realise at first that we had BG dolls - with my VE girl, I only noticed when she arrived and I could see it just in person; my second BG girl I didn't know until I'd owned her for about 3 years, and changed her wig to one which showed her resin to be green. LK's Vampire Shiwoo wasn't obvious until she bought him a body... and it was white and he wasn't!
I've been very lucky, most of my BG girls have been heads without Delf bodies, and I've been pretty lucky finding bodies that don't have a massive resin difference, I know sometimes it's not that easy.

So would I - I have El in small size too... two LTFs, and his similarities with Lishe make me like him so much. (I also have him in Chicline, but that's a different proposition). But if they released El, it would almost guarantee that Lishe wouldn't be far behind!

Congratulations! It's a shame that she's sitting at the post office, but at least she's not still stuck in transit! I know how exciting it is to get a new Lishe and an older one - they're so beautiful when they're slightly older. Hopefully you'll share some photos when she comes in!

I was lucky enough to get a new (for me) girl a couple of weeks ago - one of my grail styles of her too - an Elf Lishe 05 - I haven't shared shots of her, because the poor girl is blank and not complete, but hey... before she heads off for her face up, I'll share a shot.
This is Beira.
[IMG]ADAD 2014/125 - Beira by TeaPartyRevolution, on Flickr

45. It's ok, I laughed too. I was like oh.. so this just happened. I didn't account for this. This is definitely not going to stay on, and she looks like she has no neck right now.

46. I see, that's why I'm hesitating on lightly sanding my shiwoos... i kinda want to get rid of the green tone but considering how these versions are effectively limited now... I don't feel that comfortable doing it...thanks for the info... maybe I need to do a deeper (longer) clean instead. XD

I was actually surprised about my Lishe... the tracking info said she'd be here on the 24th but... lol it's the 21st.
moar lishes *v*

47. Oh...wow...

That's actually rather hilarious!

48. I saw this on Flickr, and had to giggle a little over it. Poor baby...<snerk>...

49. Oh my, poor thing. Maybe a couple of layers of moleskin sueding to help pad out the neckhole? Or a stack of silicone disks?

50. Tell me about it! I've got two old Nanuri06 floating heads with fantasy faceups I don't want to remove, and boy, are they classic BGs! Only a couple of really old Soom Gem boy bodies might be close, but the Nanuri06's give a big impression and the Soom Gem bodies were a bit more slender than the older Delf male bodies.

AlmySidaKay - CoolCat on ebay sells their version of neck donuts. They work fine!

51. I'm planning on speding the weekend bonding with my body as it needs cleaning and resueding.
I get how to do the sueding part, and now I've figured out which part goes where I know I can get him back together, but how should I go about cleaning him ? The sueding he has at the moment has left sticky black residue on all the joints, and I'm not even sure what was used to do it...It looks like white strips of guaze.....

52. I don't think I've heard of gauze for sueding before (but then, there's a lot I haven't heard of)-- so that's really interesting to me. Does it look like the residue will come off?

As for cleaning, I've used dish soap and water for just dirt and gunk, and I've used Magic Eraser (since you're in Kent and not the US, I don't know if they sell Magic Eraser there, but any melamine cleaning sponge should work without damaging the resin) for stains. And 91% alcohol for truly stubborn dirt marks, pen, and smudges. I also tend to rinse the body parts off in water after using the alcohol. I've never had a problem with alcohol on my dolls, but others advise against soaking them for prolonged periods of time.

53. looking for a less mature body for mine (i'm not really enthused about buying buffed up bodies tho i like seeing them) and ???? about the color match... basically have to blush whole body some greenish tint XD
but omg cp heads are so much bigger than recent delfs :|

54. But then more recent Delfs have nothing to do with the old CP Delfs - I've found the more recent F60 heads around then same size as the older Delfs - my F60 Nanuri A is the same size as my 2009 Delf Lishe. Or thereabouts, lol, the features look smaller.

55. Yeah i know they're not "related" but i was hoping they could swap wigs T-TU

Finally picked up my Lishe. She's so gorgeous :aheartbea but gonna wipe that face-up.
Also her hands are slightly pinker than her body so... guessing the hands broke at some point and were changed for newer ones (possibly FL hands? they are pinky peach as opposed to her yellowish peach). Nothing hard to match with blushing but still... :sweat
[IMG]CAM00315 by udontease, on Flickr

56. She's beautiful - They would only be Feeple60 hands if they had magnets (and for the most part, F60 resin is a good match), if they still have hooks, then they're probably a different age or a completely different company - we'd probably have to see pictures to make sure.

57. [IMG]CAM00317 by udontease, on Flickr
they look like Delf hands. maybe they are just a different, newer batch. it's not as noticeable with pictures but it was the first thing I noticed as I unwrapped her. Still doesn't detract from her prettiness so it's not that much of a problem :D

58. Yeah, those are definitely delf hands (damn that lishe pinky! xD ). No doubt they just came from a more recent batch of resin than the original body ^__^ Can't wait to see what you do for her new face-up! I love Lishes <3

59. yeah nothing blushing won't fix so I'm not worrying much. that lishe pinky tho omg i don't understand it (but it is pretty)
hopefully i have some time next week to clean and do her face and start a face-up <3

I finally understand the horde of lishes.
