Contest Couture Contest: Too much lace!

Jul 31, 2019

    1. Time isn’t always a factor in being good! I work fast and m happy with mine.

    2. My son ran cross country and at meets there were often 1,000 men competing in the same group-- with only a handful of winners. Your comment reminds me of something his coach said-- in the end we are all are competing against ourselves, so even if you think you are out of your league, really you are not! You can look at that sport, and this contest as personal challenges, I think.

Personally, I know I don't have a snowball's chance given how deep the field is, but I am thrilled I was able to find the time to compete this year, and make something lovely with a $20 budget. August is my busiest work month and as a result I've missed the past few couture challenges. (And forget about the triathlon...!) So happy to be part of it this year, even if I end up being that runner at the end of the pack. (Because at least that runner competed!)

      I've definitely got plans!

    3. This has actually inspired me to make another dress (not completely out of lace though!) for my lovely Clodia.

    4. Nice motivational speech!
I have been telling myself something similar as well. I've never gotten close to winning anything in these competitions, so my goal has been more about participating and making something at all :) I'm pretty pleased with what I made in the end, so that's a bonus, and I can't wait to see all the amazing things everyone has made :D

    5. Ooh. I can't wait for the entries to go live. I really want to see what everyone has come up with

    6. Sorry to double post! @cowpewter and @dollsoflace I was just wondering if the voting will be up soon. I totally understand if it is taking a while to post everything, just curious as I had to look up time zone conversion and noticed that the voting is technically supposed to be live now (unless I calculated wrong...knowing me I probably did! hehe)

    7. We are trying to finalize a few technical things, but hopefully voting will be up soon. Thanks for your patience and support on this. We are very excited to show everyone’s amazing entries!

I want to thank everyone who entered for their wonderful contributions. You all should be very proud of your works.

    8. @dollsoflace Awesome! Thank you for clearing that up. Last years sewing contest was a bit of a challenge for me as sewing a garment from socks is...well... you can imagine how hard it is! But this years lace contest is right up my alley and I have a feeling we are going to be seeing some very beautiful outfits.
P.S. You are doing a fantastic job on the Mods team @dollsoflace !

    9. Good to hear that voting will open soon! I'm excited to see all the creations everyone else has come up with :)

    10. This is so true! I know I don't stand a chance at all, but I entered anyway. I've always wanted to try the couture contest; I usually do the triathlon, but my schedule didn't allow it this year. So I decided to go for it, tried out some stuff I'd wanted to attempt, made something that, regardless of how I place, I enjoy and will use in the future, and learned some new stuff in the process. So regardless of where I place, in a way I still won, and so did the rest of you. :celebrate

    11. Have been looking around and haven't been able to find the thread with all the entries for this contest, am I going blind?

    12. I think it's not up yet if you see the previous posts, but they're working on it :)

    13. Thanks, got a bit confused as it said the voting would begin 23rd. But I bet a lot of people entered giving the mods overtime, can't wait to see the entries tho!

    14. I know, I'm also super excited and checking in for updates all the time! x)
I'm expecting lots of adorable stuff. I love lace :D

    15. I was wondering if the voting period is going to be extended for this or no?

      • x 4
    16. @dollsoflace Any updates yet on when voting will be up? I know there have been technical issues and I'm trying to remain patient, just a little concerned since voting was supposed to end on the 29th and it's already the 26th. I don't want to miss it! :D

    18. I'm glad there's extra time, I don't know how I'm going to pick...

    19. Wow, wow, wow!:o Bravo to all the amazing entries! You all really outdid yourselves on this one, and the true winners are each and every doll who won an amazing lacy outfit by their loving owners. Applause, applause to you all...well done!:cheer

    20. Right??? My brain feels a bit shortsighted now seeing all the beautiful ideas other people can who with! Tbh, I had planned to deconstruct my own outfit, but I kinda ended up liking it and I may have to .. *ahem* borrow some of the other awesome ideas for later projects! <3

    21. Aren’t all the entries amazing? We are so proud of everyone! Good luck to all the participants!

    22. The entries are all beautiful!! So proud of you all!
...Now I see the flaws in my own xD

    23. WOW! Such amazing outfits! :love Well done to everyone who took part, you've all made such incredible lacy creations!!! <3

    24. :o oh geeze

    25. You guys are amazing! Was so hard to chose only 3, but I managed in the end, best of luck to you all!

      • x 1
    26. Why must you guys do this to me? Here I sit with a long list, trying way too hard to narrow it down. Even if I can't vote for them all, I'm still looking at so many of them, wishing I had them for my own dolls. :love

I still like my own entry, but I don't think I have a chance of winning. I don't really mind though, because there are just so many entries who do deserve a prize! :D

      • x 2
    27. I feel exactly the same way! I really want to know where some of those gorgeous laces came from, I've never seen anything like them, and I love what everyone did with them! I figured I didn't stand a chance (but I still like my outfit and I'm glad I took the challenge), but anyone who wins will definitely have earned it.

    28. Anyone else getting an error when trying to vote? As far as I know the voting period isn't done yet.

    29. I'm also unable to vote. I assume the moderators have been notified?

    30. I let them know so we'll see

    31. Hey guys, we're aware of the error with the voting form, and are looking into it! If not fixed shortly, we will likely extend the voting deadline to make up for this.

I will post again when it's fixed.

      • x 4
    32. It seems like voting now also open to people who already voted. Was it reset?

    33. I see the same thing and I already voted as well. I’d like to know as well, to be sure my vote counts without double voting. Definitely want my faves to get credit!

    34. Any news on the voting yet?

I know, I know! I’m pretty sure I don’t stand a chance of winning with all the beautiful outfits in there, but I can’t wait to see who does! :chibi

    39. Same! Lol.

    40. Same here, everything was so amazing, I don't have a chance at all, but I really want to know who won!

      • x 1
    41. Me too! :XD:

    42. A bit of an anticlimax to it, me thinks.

      • x 1
    43. Is there a place we can see how many votes we got?

      • x 1
    44. There isn't.

    45. Congratulations to all the winners! I'm always blown away by all the talented people we have on here, and the creativity. Everyone's outfits were beautiful, it was a pleasure to look at all of them.

I lost a lot of days thinking a bout what to make, because I chose to use the doll I find sewing for the easiest, and he is a male doll. I didn't want my entry to look like pajamas/lingerie, that was the only clear idea I had about the outfit in my head. I ended up making a second optional top, because I thought my original outfit would look too much like pajamas, but then after putting the whole thing together and taking photos, I decided to submit my original idea. DX

      My entry:

My second top, that I didn't enter:

I was thinking of adding a lot of metal pieces to contrast the black, more so on the belt. However, I couldn't find my very small stash of miniature buckles, then I tried making them out of a repurposed aluminum can. That went badly (I slashed a few of my finger tips wide open!), so I wasn't able to add any metal to the outfit in the end.^.^;; Regardless, I am kind of happy with my new patterns, they fit my Rou rather well and I suck at making those as well, so I am a bit amused. I'm also jealous of all the cool lace selection other people had. My local fabric stores always have the same stuff (the kind of lace that seems like curtain fabric -- the material I used for my coat, sadly). Looking back it now, I think it was less fun than I thought because I love lace, but I ended up making it a pain in the gut when I chose to make an outfit for a male doll, when I already suck at sewing. (:

    46. You should be proud of your entry @Enzyme — in my humble opinion, it's not easy to create a lace outfit for a male, but you managed to keep the elegant and graceful aspect of lace while imbuing it with masculinity that I was really impressed by!

If anyone else has a story to share about their process, I hope you take this time to do so!

    49. Congratulations to the winners and all entries can be proud!
Also thank you to all the Mods - you had some rough weeks I guess, but well done!

Finally we can talk about it xD
I was lucky number 13 - I just realized that lol
It was fun to make, this is my favorite contest and I am glad I managed something, I am proud of.
That is in the end the most important thing for me :3

    50. As expected I didn't win but fujini got to show off how dang cute she is when she gets in the way of my doll photoshoots :blush

    51. Congrats to the winners!

Mine was #3, the bohemian boy. The outfit is extra special to me because his shirt is made of fabric leftover from my mom’s handmade 1980 wedding dress, and most of the beads are things my grandpa had collected over the years. He passed away in 1994, and had most of it years before that, so they truly are vintage beads and buttons.

A few of my favorites I want to call out!

@Enzyme I loved your boy so much! The style worked really well and he reminded me juuuuust a little of Riku from Kingdom Hearts.

#22. The white dream romantic dress reminded me of a vintage wedding dress and is so beautiful!

#27 Sapphire Rhapsody was stunning and amazing you came up with that from such limited materials!

#49 When Lace Meets Shapes was so cool! I never even considered forming stuff structures from lace, and the bunny ears are so cute!

    53. There really were some amazing entries, congratulations to the winners!
One of my picks made it but I'd like to mention two others that I love.

#33--outfits for tiny tinies are always a challenge, this one was so cute.
#46--to me, this 1920's-style sheath is the epitome of simple elegance and so true to the era--beautiful.

    54. Big congratulations to the winners!
So many amazing creations and so much talent. It was really hard to pick favorites.
I definitely want to participate next time too :D

    55. #33 was mine. Thank you <3

I decided to make something for my smallest doll because I was moving overseas and thought this would be a good project for on the airplanes. It took a lot longer than expected.

I think that the requirement to use only lace actually made it easier to make what I wanted as the material I used as a base was slightly stretchy so I didn't have to accommodate any fasteners. I just stitched a leotard, stitched on the lace while the doll was still wearing the leotard, then glued around the legs and waist and hemmed them. I only used lace that had a gathering thread or was pregathered and because the base material was lace I was able to sew with a blunt tip embroidery so I wouldn't scratch my doll.

    56. Congrats to the winners! (And everyone else, all the outfits were great!)

Mine was #7, the faun with the jacket of Luna moths. The biggest challenges I found were that I was working with about half the available time due to a trip, and that it was hard to figure out how to piece the pieces together for a count on what I needed to make. It's all made on an embroidery machine (I've bought a lot of lace patterns for some reason), and used up the purple thread entirely!

    57. @Lopmon , that's interesting to know your process, I like the color layers too.

    58. Mine was #14! This was a really fun theme to work with, and it got me to use up some of the massive stash of lace I've been hoarding for years... I have so much lace and barely use it.

My personal favorite entry is #36. I really like the color choices and all the little details! :D

There were so many great ideas for using lace across all the entries, and I'm inspired to try out some new things for myself! Maybe I'll be able to put a dent in my lace hoard, hehe!

    59. I had #11, yeey! :D
Congrats to the other winners, your outfits were awesome! I also especially liked @Lopmon, @CloakedSchemer, and #10 among many many others! I really didn't think I would get a prize among so many good ones.
