Contest Couture Contest: Too much lace!

Jul 31, 2019

    1. I guess I'm still unsure where the line is on the lace patterns. Is it just not allowed to make an entire piece following someone else's pattern, or does ever single element within say, a tape lace that is being sewn have to be either so generic as so be universal or 100% original? To be more specific, on one piece of tape lace I want to use is a hand written pattern I wrote looking at a motif on sample of antique lace I have in a framed collection that I got from antique store. Like I looked at the antique piece, then figured out the stitches for the part of the motif I wanted to use (about 20% of the original design) and put that motif in different background stitch and added beads. Another is a motif I learned to make over a decade ago at a workshop and can make from memory now. There are several variations of similar motifs out there but I'm not sure if it's as generic of a design as say a basic stitch and there was definitely a pattern involved when I learned. In this case I'd be taking what I learned as a stand alone motif and incorporating it in a bigger piece, and I could alter the design of the motif itself slightly from how I learned it if that would help with the originality facror.. Would those be considered "original" enough? Everything else I have planned is either generic, machine made, or 100% original.

    2. CLARIFICATION:

Velcro IS allowed as a fastener/notion. Sorry for any confusion on that point. There was a small miscommunication. It is correct that fasteners should all be sewn, not glued. Sew-in velcro is fine. Adhesive velcro is not.

    3. Using patterns for creating your own lace is fine. The restriction on creating your own patterns applies to the sewing pattern for your garments themselves. You can definitely use a lace pattern you reverse-engineered from a sampler!

What we don’t want is people using sewing patterns created by other people. There are many commercially available (or even free) sewing patterns in existence for various doll sizes. We want you to draft your pattern from scratch, whether that’s by starting from a basic sloper, making a masking tape pattern, draping fabric directly on the doll, or whatever method works best for you. :3nodding:

    4. Awesome, just wanted to be sure! Arthritic hands, so velcro is my closure of choice if I can help it.

    5. I just looked over your entry, and it looks like everything submitted just fine. :)

    6. In my usual style, I had everything planned out for what I wanted to do. Had begun pattern drafting. Then, my brain was like "you know what could be cool? Something completely different".
We will see which idea wins in the end!

    7. Mine didn't turn out to plan either, but IMO, it actually looks better than I expected, so no complaints! :dance Go with what inspires you most!

    8. My pattern is done, I just have to ask the mods something! :D I'm so excited because I get to do a lot with this piece and show off some of my specialties when it comes to sewing. And this entire project has been fun/stressful when it came to making the patterns! I'm only dreading the rest of the process :sweat:lol: And praying the weather holds up!

    9. :kitty2

I personally always end up going a different way than I plan things, so I’m relating to that on a spiritual level. Sometimes it’s more fun to go with the flow and see where your imagination takes you, isn’t it?

I just wanted to say: to everyone who has or is planning to enter — you’re all amazing.

I hope the process was/is fun for you. No matter the outcome you should all be very proud of yourselves. I’m cheering you on, everyone! :cheer

    10. I haven't even started yet. I've just been so tired -_-

    11. I hope I can finish mine. I really can't wait to see what everyone has made though! The past few years voting for the contests has been so difficult because there's too many amazing entries.

    12. I'm going to have to modify my plans... :sweat I had everything laid out last night, and sometime between then and this morning, one of my wonderful cats (probably the kitten) ran off with one piece. I'm pretty sure I can still make it work, so fingers crossed!

    13. I just submitted mine, and I hope I did everything right.:eusa_pray I love supporting the anniversary contests every year! C’mon everybody...you can do this! I can’t wait to see what awesome outfits everyone creates for their dolls!:D

    14. Can you deconstruct a piece of say embroidered bridal lace and reconstruct it in a new way? For example, cut the embroidered pieces smaller, or layer the tulle it’s already on?

    15. Are eyelets acceptable closures/fasteners? They are neither sewn nor glued.

    16. I’ve already made mine and in process of photoshooting. Like some others, few things that ended up differently than I expected in the end. I have photo of the laces laid out in the measured area (with rulers), and couple of ribbons on the outside of the area. I almost always ended up doing things different than I originally planned, and the end result is that I added few metal embellishments and beads, and that wasn’t included in that picture.
Is this all right? (No extra laces at all, I stayed with what I originally laid out)

      • x 2
    17. The lace is what we need to clearly see laid out and measured, so you have this covered. You can have a separate picture of extra materials used for decorative purposes. Simply make a collage of the lace laid out and all the other materials you used to create your final piece.

It’s totally understandable you can get inspired to add more touches after you’re done!

    18. I can add photos of other stuff I used except for one thing- I only had one item in my craft and it was used. I don’t have any extra of that said item or can find it anywhere. I can sketch the image out of the item and add it to the collage.

    19. Yes, you may reconstruct your lace in any way you see fit. If you want to use multiple layers, that is also okay, but all your fabric must still fit within the yardarge limits before it is layered.

      Eyelets are just fine!

    20. I have to modify my plans too. I was a little over-optimistic about how much would fit in the space allotment. :sweat
      On to Plan B!

    21. Here I'd worked out how to modify the layout with my missing piece (but not sewn together yet), and the missing piece of lace turned up! It was on the rug in the bedroom this afternoon, so the kitten clearly stashed it in there and pulled it out during the day. So now I get to re-adjust to put the piece back in (and take a photo of the extra piece to collage in)!

    22. All right, so I want to make sure this is done right.

All of my lace goes into the needed measurements (I have a tape box and tape measures to help verify measurements), but I can also do a secondary photo with the other pieces I used (notions/trims/etc) and collage them together for a single photo?

    23. Yep, your materials photo can definitely be a collage. Just make sure we can still read the numbers on the tape measures. :)

    24. Do those little ribbon flowers count as allowed notions/embellishments?
      These
Also i assume pearls count as beads? I'm just entering for fun but i wanna be sure everything follows the rules perfectly

    25. Yes. The flowers will be considered decorative if used with that intention and pearls would count as beads.

    26. Edit: my exhaustion contributed to the fact that I posted in the wrong thread. Ooops!! Sorry!!

    27. Is it possible to get the EDT timestamp for when admissions for this competition are due? Just so I can check with my own timezone and not be surprised :sweat

    28. Almost finished! Are there any rules for the sizes of the images? :)

    29. I just updated the first post as well. Submissions are due by 11:59 PM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on August 20th. Submissions received right at midnight will also be accepted, but I didn't want to make the date confusing by saying 12 am on the 21st.

No larger than 800px on the longest side is preferred, though your materials photo can be larger if it makes it too hard to read your ruler.

    30. Just submitted my entry. I had so much fun making my outfit! :) I'm a little concerned, though. Even though I made my materials photo larger than 800px in an attempt to make my tape measures more visible, the numbers on them still look pretty tiny. Would a mod be able to let me know if my entry is acceptable?

    31. Is mesh considered lace at all?

    32. I am also nervous about whether my materials photo is clear enough.
But they will let us know if something needs to be changed, right? Otherwise if the post disappears it's okay?

      • x 1
    33. I am really hoping they do let us know if something needs to be changed! I'd hate to be disqualified over something that's potentially correctable. And sorry, but what did you mean by the post disappearing?

    34. Me too :shudder The way I understood it only you and the mods can see your submission once you have posted it and you can still make changes, but once they accept it you will not be able to see it anymore

    35. Your entry looks just fine.

Hi Addictiya, can you post a picture of the fabric you're asking about? Mesh is pretty vague. Do you mean tulle? Tulle can be used as long as its been embroidered/turned into lace. Point d'espirit also counts as lace for this contest (and is pretty tulle-like).

Your entry looks fine as well.

      • x 2
    36. Thank you!! Point d'espirit is the fabric I wanted to use, I wasn't sure what it was called :))!

    37. Oh, I see what you mean now. Thanks for clarifying! :)

Thanks so much for checking and getting back to me! :)

    38. If this is the case, does that then mean mine hasn't been accepted? I'm somewhat lost on the rules of this.

    39. Don't worry, we haven't started moving any of the submissions yet. I just glanced through your submission, and it looks fine.

      • x 1
    40. I've done the pictures and all, just need to pull together the collage pictures which I will do this afternoon and post my submission. Hiked to a glacier yesterday in hope to get a good picture, but to my disappointment, the glacier was diminishing and I couldn't cross the creek (it's been a bad summer for Alaska, with the severe heat wave we're getting). Ended up using a photo from the botanical garden. But in all, it was a fun project. Can't wait to see others. ^_^

    41. If something needs to be fixed for our submission we will be messaged, right? That wasn't really answered on a general scale. I'm also worried about having fit the material picture in without it being massive and still being able to see the numbers.

    42. Woo, snuck mine in with less than an hour left. @_@ Plus dealing with being sick all day, it was definitely a challenge.

Fingers crossed! I wish everyone luck in the contest! :aheartbea

      • x 3
    43. A week left or an hour left, doesn't really matter as long as it's entered! :celebrate I hope you're feeling better soon!

      • x 2
    44. You just scared me silly.
My clock says it's 00:33 edt while the rules say it needs to be in by 11:59pm edt.
      Hoping mine's right

    45. I hope I'm wrong! I'm in the PST time zone, and googling it gave me a 3+ hour time difference. X: I always get the time zones mixed up because I'm already wonked up today to begin with. Apologies!

    46. If it helps ease your mind, I'm in the EDT time zone, and it is currently 1:07am on August 20, so according to the deadline, you should still have just under 23 hours left to work! (I had already submitted my entry and forgot what date was the deadline...)

    47. @Caffeine a la Mocha not too worry. I only had a slight scare. Hope your sickness gets better soon❤

@CloakedSchemer thank you very much, that's a relief, it's mainly photos, but the weather isn't cooperating

    48. Indeed, PDT is three hours earlier than EDT. If you’re in the U.S., then midnight on the east coast means 9pm on the west coast. In this case, for the contest it’d be 8:59pm.

For those of you confused on what time that is for you, there are some time zone converters like this one online. Just make sure you set the contest time to Eastern Daylight Time, as this would be our current clock given Daylight Savings.

    49. You scared me aswell. I finished last night after a horrible 1.5 weeks of sewing and slowly loosing my nearby eyesight. (i had my eyes lasered 3 weeks ago, but it's the slow healing variety where they dissolve you cornea and have it slowly grow back by itself because that would be better for my eyes. But instead of beeing nearsighted it feels more like i am beeing farsighted at the moment, my viision is wonky and wobbly because of the regrowing process, it will return but only slowly.)

So reading and doing the sewing work i was atempting was really hard (especially because i was on holiday with my entire 23 headed family and the house we stayed in was dark and had no good crafting lighting and i forgot to take a treadpuller or magnifying glass, so i couldn't even try to thread my offcourse tiny eyed handsewing needle. (because a size 10 needle works best for my hands but not for my eyes :)....)
At one point i even decided to quit and finish in my own time (after my sight had returned), but it was so much fun to do, so i just kept going at it.

So imagine my horror waking up and reading/ thinking i had missed the deadline by a hair :)

    50. After 3 nights of sewing - I've made it :) I'm scared and now I think that my outfit is nasty. But I've made it!

    51. I am trying to drag myself to finish. It’s not working very well

    52. @arlais I'm in that situation too. I don't think I'm going to make it. *_*

    53. You can do it, you can do it! :sumomo::sumomo:
Don't give up. ( if partially blind me can do it on holiday you can do it to)

    54. Well my crappy outfit is submitted.. I got it done.

    55. Keep dragging guys!!! There’s hours left to go; you can DO IT!!!!

      • x 2
    56. Well I didn't get everything in that I had first envisioned but I am REALLY pleased with my entry. Can't wait to see them all up for voting ^^

    57. Made it! Whew! The gorgeous embroidered lace I fell in love and ordered online with did not arrive in time, so I went with Plan B and did not get started until this weekend (because I was hoping for that fabric to arrive...It came today. :doh)

Still, I am happy with what I came up with for Plan B, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone else's lacy confections!

    58. Shame the lace was so late, but hey, that means you can use it to make whatever you want with no rules or restrictions! :D

      • x 2
    59. Oooof that was a close one. Definitely out of my league but, I figure it was worth trying!

    60. I had my entry in only a few days after the contest was announced as I was so excited to sew something. But now I'm worried mine might not be that great as I could've spent more time on it. Oh well... Time will tell
