Contest Couture Contest: Decades of Fashion!

Aug 1, 2014

    1. Correct! :)

    2. That is awesome news! Then this thread is easy to find ^^ I can't wait! I hope as many people as possible will post more details about their works here then! ^^

    3. In the end I guessed right with the 20's popularity (wich has 10 entries). The 50's did worse than I thought (only quantatively speaking), altought with 6 entries it is in the group of the fairly populars decades.

I'm happy that the less populars decades had at least a bit of variety too, no decades with only 1 or no entry.

    4. i think the really full skirts prevalent in the 50's may have been hard to get out of the fabric yardage. if you didnt have fabric stiff enough to hold up on its own you would need a petticoat to duplicate the look and the combo would take more than the fabric allowed.

    5. I almost think there should have been a prize for getting the most out of your fabric allowance. Some people had to be very creative in using just about every spare millimetre and producing fabulous outfits that did not look at all constrained by fabric limits. :daisy

    6. that would be cool. they should get a gift certificate to the nearest fabric store or something....

    7. I would want that so badly! xD Sadly there are no fabric stores close to me lol. Only ones are far and very crowded and hectic. Online gift coupons? :P Yes please.

Edit: Also, I think it would be best and easier for everyone if the link to the voting page is edited onto the first post? That way anyone who stumbles upon this thread can check out the entries easily ^^

    8. Bumping the voting link as it's the last day of voting? (I think?)

    9. i think there is just over 23 hours, i'm assuming it closes at midnight on the 30th est?

    10. I can't wait to see who won! So many awesome entries, it is exciting.
Too bad I work until 11:30pm Sunday. :P I will likely have to wait a long time before seeing the results. ><

    11. Oooh dear I'm going to pee my pants xD I'm so excited to hear the results!!

    12. Whew! Just got my votes in! Super excited to see who won! I hope I get the chance to enter next year! I wanted to try making a hippie outfit for one of my dolls. XD oh well. I guess I'm just inspired by everyone awesomeness. I want to make some of those outfits for me now!!

    13. Wow, I can't wait to see who won! I hope it will be the one I chose... ;)

    14. my entry was 50's but i had a few personal problems and just couldn't make the deadline

    15. I will surely revisit next year's sewing competition thread (and maybe even participate myself) to look at all the beautiful outfits of everyone who couldn't make it this year! Hopefully next year will be better chance for everyone who missed this one ^^

    16. 3 more hours till voting closes on all the contests......

    17. My anticipation/anxiety is building…

    18. I'm eager to see the results of all the different contests. I've got several dark horses I'm rooting for; I hope they get some love!

    19. I'm so excited, I can't wait to find out who it is! To be totally honest, I don't think I'd be disappointed with any of them winning, everybody did so well.

    20. So the voting is now closed!? Can I now go post a mile long posts of my competition outfit! :') I'm so excited for everyone that I barely slept last night! I hope winners are announced soon! : 3

    21. I'm working on the vote totals now, but since many people did not follow the directions and voted for the same entry more than once, the vote totals must be manually adjusted. It will be tomorrow before results are posted. Please contain yourself for just one more day! :)

    22. Aww, bummer : ( it's a shame that there is that much extra work for you! But I'll post pics after results are posted : ) thanks for your hard work! ^^

    23. I think that is the only thing that ticked me off this year, all the lost votes for wonderful entries, because people just don't bother to read. You did a great job, the voting criteria were clear, the instructions EVERYWHERE to find and there are still people out there that do not read.
It's just soooooo sad, because the person wanted to prise a special entry with attention and delivered 0 votes at the end.

      Thanks for the hard work^^

    24. Yes, exactly!! I feel the same way too :( It's such a bummer! I know if my entry were to lose votes because of this, I would be upset >_<

    25. How could anyone miss it? ~sigh~

    26. I just pretend the people who voted incorrectly maybe don't speak the best of English and didn't understand the instructions... but I'm not sure that can excuse all the of the mistakes haha XD;. Too bad there isn't a way to make the form unable to submit if a number is selected twice the way you can't post a thread in the marketplace if some of the info is missing.

    27. Turynn, that's my best guess, too. And there are also some people who simply won't read the rules no matter what. But yes, if it was possible to somehow make it that way that the form won't be accepted unless they selected different entries, life would be easier for the poor mods as well.

    28. I think that I'll do my best not to look how many votes anybody lost >< it might be depressing!

    29. What I thought was really impressive about this contest is that for most of them there are usually a few entries that you can pretty much toss out without even thinking twice. I didn't see any of those in this contest. Varying degrees of sewing expertise, for certain, but nothing that said "nope!" right off the top. --- well maybe the skilled seamstresses had an easier time of it, but I sure didn't :)

We all had our workout trying to vote, for sure!

    30. Winners have been announced HERE!
We'll add the complete voting results later today.

    31. Congratulations to winners :daisy

    32. Huge congratulations!

    33. Congratulations to all who won (and also to those who did not)! It is always encouraging to see the depth of talent in this hobby.

    34. Congrats to all the winners! :D

    35. Congratulations to everyone who won!

I always feel tempted to enter but never have the time (or talent) to do so. This year I tried because of that Chicline Lishe, but it was so much harder than I thought it would be. I don't know how to sew, I don't know how to take proper photos and my camera is on its last legs; it was truly challenging for me! It was inspiring to see what other people made and their beautiful photography. (:

    36. as we discussed earlier i posted a whole bunch more pictures about my entry, but to keep this thread from clogging and since i wasn't sure if it had the one picture per post rule i created a gallery thread instead.

      congrats to the winners btw!

    37. Congrats to all the winners! And to all the others, congrats to everybody for making such beautiful clothes!

I've also created a gallery thread with more pix of my boy. :)

    38. Fantastic job, everyone! Congratulations to the winners! Amazing stuff! I'm in awe!

Here is the raw voting data, for those of you who would like to see how you did. There were definitely some category favorites that didn't get into the top four spots! :)

    39. Seeing that, I'm not sure how I feel. I have to admit I'm both shocked and thrilled to see my entry sitting at the top of the spirit of the decade category!! I didn't think I'd rank that high! O_o but also pretty sad that not all of those votes counted. :( still, overall, I'm happy with the results and huge thank you to everybody who did vote for my boy in any category! :D

    40. Okay, I'd really like to say something, too.

Like most I regretted that we weren't allowed to choose one winner for every decade, because styles were vastly different in the last century and some decades just lent themselves better to create an impressive outfit than others. (But then again even one vote per decade wouldn't have been enough…)

As a kid who grew up in the eighties and spent their teens in the 90s, I was really impressed with what people created for these two decades. I would never ever have had the ideas what to do for those years, but you guys nailed it. Like spot-on. I had such moments of nostalgia when I went through those entries. CloakedSchemer, since the contest is over I am allowed to confess that I was one of those who voted for your Kurt Cobain recreation. Until I saw him and his dressing style I was sure that there was no such thing as a characteristic fashion for these years, but what was I wrong! Because I swear to god that this look is exactly what every. single. boy. in my high school days was wearing. Like every day. Blue jeans, a t-shirt and a lumberjack shirt. The hair shoulder long and usually with the obligatory undercut.

And then the 80s with all of these aerobic maniacs #46, #48, #51, #52 - that was exactly the spirit of those years. Especially #52 this is so dead on, especially with this face-up and wig! Bleach blonde permed hair with lots of volume, blue eyeshadow and pink lips, leggins with leg warmer, long sweatshirts with crazy patterns and to top it all: dancing slippers as shoes xD.

Also to #50 I would like to say that this style is just so much what the official fashion at that time used to look like. Double-breasted dresses in bright colors with huge shoulder pads and broad belts. That's what the women on the covers of the fashion magazines looked like.

I'd love to write something to everyone if I only had the time to do it, but I just wanted to say that I was very, very impressed with all entries. You all did a great job! :D

    41. I'm delighted to see that the Hooverette got some love in the voting. I just thought that was such a cool garment (and a mini history lesson, too). Sharkyra, your ensemble blew me away ... not just the dress and the cloche, but those spot-on accurate underpinnings! Ditto with issadora's gown and underpinnings.

On the whole, I was impressed with all the talent on display. Good show, evahbodee!

    42. Congratulations to all the winners, you deserve it! The garments were very beautiful and professionally made ^^ Maaru, yours was exceptionally beautiful and I LOVE your girl modelling it, she fits it perfectly! Now do you take commissions? *-* Haha, just kidding! :P

@Sharkyra: My entry was #52, your words are so sweet, thank you :') I feel like my pictures didn't do it justice, even my sister said so, which is unfortunate, but I'm proud of it and my doll is still wearing it xD I painted on the pattern myself using Acrylic paint, I loooove wild 80's patterns, they're so colourful and cheeky <3 And you're correct, I intentionally stole my Yo-SDs untameable mohair wig to achieve the big poofy hair look x)
Your entry was amazing too! How you managed to use just the fabric allotment I will never know xD

@silje: Did you embroider(?) the beads individually? That is super cool! That feather boa was the perfect touch!

I am kinda bummed my entry didn't make it, because I had my eyes on that Popovy doll lol, but hey, there's always next year :) Now I can spam pictures of my outfit using clearer formats and share it on my blog :D Yay!

Also, Auntbear's 20's crochet outfit was amazing too! It had that sweet and warm vibe to it, I voted for that! Looked so very difficult to make >v< Another favourite is #39 from the 60's hippie era! Ohh that one was such a good one! I'd like to wear it myself lol!

So many good entries, really! Good job to everyone! :3nodding:

    43. Can't say I'm not a little disappointed by how few votes I got, but congrats to the winners. :)
I really like Maaru's outfit, its stunning. Glad to see it got first place.

I made a Flickr album with my progress pictures, along with pictures of the finished albums.
      https://www.flickr.com/photos/127069765@N03/sets/72157646688040485/
All my progress pictures were taken with my phone, so I didn't think they were nice enough to make a gallery thread, but you can still oggle them here.

    44. Sharkyra, thank you so much. :) being born in the 80s, and terrible at history, I felt I couldn't do any other decade justice. The other entries did amazing jobs, things I wouldn't have considered, and executed them with so much more accuracy and detail than I could have imagined! But 90s was perfect for me to try, I was late getting into grunge (and obsessed with silverchair, sadly I was too young to appreciate Nirvana during their peak) but nothing else stood out to me but grunge! And I'm just happy that I made the attempt, as this is an outfit Lakin will continue to wear regularly.

    45. @Kielin: Ohh! That one was yours? I loved that dress! Color choice is very very good! :D

I just thought of something interesting. So many cool patterns were used for this contest, it would be a great idea to distribute them as actual collection of patterns! We can create a collective thread of all the individual outfits and their patterns available to download for everyone to come back to and remember this contest :) I know some people would prefer not to distribute, but the ones who don't mind, no harm done right? My patterns are safely tucked away in a clear folder, I'd love to scan them and give them out.

      What do you guys think?

    46. i'd like to make a formal request to the mods, if its ok with everyone else. now that the voting is done, could you please go back in and add the names of the makers to all the entries? i'd love to know who made what, and see everyone get credit for all their hard work!

    47. Kielen, your outfit made me so nostalgic. If I didn't have one just like it, I know my older sister did!

    48. Because the contests are entered anonymously, we always leave it up to the contestants to identify themselves when it's over. :)

    49. Thank you. :)
My fabric, bias tape, and threads were actually from the 1960s, so it was easier to get the right colors. (Can you believe they don't make that hideous orange anymore? Haha) Though it was probably more of a pain that way, they are starting to get fairly brittle, so I had to redo a lot of the pieces because they fell apart.

I used a vintage Simplicity (6920) pattern. So I don't think I could really redistribute it. lol

    50. i don't really have anything to distribute. i always assumed mine would be a one of a kind outfit so i didn't write down any notes on my stitching as i went along. i just kept stitching, frogging and restitiching till it was right... the crochet version of draping :)

    51. I want to thank everyone, who voted for me.
I saw the contest by accident, and I have to admit, that I totally forgot about the events. I was so busy with commissions and then with my entry for LDoll contest (also sewn at the last minute), that I didn't have time, and I sewed this dress in one day.
So I'm really very happy, that you liked my work.
      THANK YOU!!!

Maaru your dress was number 1 for me :) Congrats!!!

      Also congratulations to other winners.

      My favs #50, #28, #14, #10 :)

      Chamillia, yes, I did ^^

    52. Oh wow! That brittle? o_o Well, I was sewing some stretchy fabric (from an old pair of leggings), and let me tell you, it is a nightmare. I just wanted it done and over with :')
So you scaled down a human sized pattern? :D Thats what I've always wanted to do, but I don't think I have the patience :P

    53. @Polyhymnia: The Hooverette was mine! :D I'm super excited to see someone liked it. I just can't for the life of me associate the 30s with glitz and glamor. (and to be honest, I don't think I have the skill to use the materials to try XD)

@Aunt Bear: Good lord, yours was probably one of my favorites. Your girl was super adorable in that dress and I wanted to cuddle her. And the stockings! :O The seam really went straight up the back of her legs!

There were so many things that I loved about all of these entries. The details and shapes and colors. If I can find a way to get my pattern scanned into the computer, I'd be happy to share it and write up some instructions. :)

    54. Yeah, I didn't think it was going to be that bad, but it was in the back of a closet for 40 years, so not really well taken care of.
Oh goodness, I usually do stretchy fabric and I'm not super fond of it. Though I dislike the silky stuff the most, so much fraying! D:

      Yep. :)
I doubt I did it 'the right way'. I just had the pattern guide scanned, zoomed until it was the right size, then traced it off my computer monitor onto paper towels.

Thanks, glad you liked it. :)

That's pretty much how I got the fabric. My grandmother used to make my mothers clothes, so I have a bunch of scraps from what the clothes were made out of. So my mom likely wore something just like it.

    55. @Polyhymnia: The Hooverette was mine! :D I'm super excited to see someone liked it. I just can't for the life of me associate the 30s with glitz and glamor. (and to be honest, I don't think I have the skill to use the materials to try XD)

    56. I'm really pleased that three out of the four I voted for were amongst the winners! Now I'd really like to know who chose which doll as their prize! :daisy

    57. I wouldn't mind sharing my patterns, except....they're very "trial and error" and unprofessional. I made them by taping the body in masking tape, then cutting it along where seamline should lay, and tracing the shapes onto computer paper. >.> Even then, I still had to adjust the pieces once I put them together (and at least one of the holes in the overshirt wasn't intentional, the machine tried to eat it...thankfully, that worked for the overall look). So, while I'd be happy to share, I'm not sure my pattern would really be very useful to anybody.

now that winners are announced and everything, I personally would love to know who created the following entries:

#39- The war/hippie girl. I LOVE the detail in the jacket, and how you combined both the military and protesters in such a way that looks so perfectly put together and not mismatched at all. That little sign just completed the whole look for me. :)

#43- The disco club guy- My husband was highly impressed with this one, and thought this guy was just too cool. :P

#47- The Material Girl- I had not thought about Lisa Frank in so long, but I had the school supplies, the hair accessories, the bead kit, the figurines, and this really took me back! I didn't get really into Lisa Frank until the early 90s, but that trapper keeper is one of the best props I've seen, love it!

#49- the Axl Rose inspired guy. Not many boys in the contest, so this guy really jumped out at me, and I love his outfit. I'd love to see more of him (and my 90's boy thinks he looks fun to party with. haha)

    58. Hello guys! I wanted to thank everyone who voted for my entry!! Huge hugs and many thanks!!! I took part at the last minute in this competition (on Friday!) and I wasn't sure if I can finish my work O_o I'm glad I finally took the risk, it was worth it, I'm sooo happy now ^^
Congratulations to all participants, thank you for having much fun together!!!!!!! XD

    59. Hi everyone ^^

I was the 90s girl with the stirrup pants. I didn't expect to win anything, especially since I didn't even decide to enter until the last minute (literally started sewing at 3pm-ish on Saturday!) because I was super burned out from the Triathlon. But I decided Saturday afternoon, that since I'd bought the fabric and everything, that it was at least worth a try, and whatever I managed to get done, I'd submit.

I also wanted to make a mini-backpack (we did not carry purses in the early 90s, it was all about the mini-backpack!) and you can see the pink and blue canvas in my fabric allotment photo, but at 10 pm I had my pants and shirt and scrunchy done, but the backpack not even started, so I decided to focus on making my t-shirt clip as blingy and 90s as possible.

I made the tshirt clip from sculpy and a bit of craft wire, then painted it black and glued all those tiny pink rhinestones on. I was literally racing the clock with the glue drying, and even started taking the detail shots of other parts of the outfit before it was even dry enough to use.

I wish I'd had time for better photos, and I wish I'd said more in my little description box, I was originally going to say something about the side-ponytail, but considering I got my entry submitted at 11:57 pm and had spent the previous 30 minutes cursing my computer to run photoshop and "save for web" faaaaster, I'm mostly just proud of myself for getting an entry in at all.

Everyone's entries were incredible, and congrats to the winners! I wish I could have voted for more entries because so many of them were great.
