Cotton Dolls / 棉花娃娃 / Kpop Plushies

Oct 12, 2022

    1. Lately I've found myself getting deep into a type of plushie called 棉花娃娃 or Cotton Doll. I don't know a lot of the history on them but I believe they started out in the kpop community as plushies based on kpop idols. These days there are many varieties of them. Some based on anime, Chinese dramas, video games, or those known as non-attribute (not affiliated with existing media). They mostly range in 10cm, 15cm, 20cm, and 40cm sizes, with 20cm being the most popular size (from my understanding). Typically they have two body types; standard and chubby.

Many of them have animal ears/tails added (even if the original character did not have these) that are often removable (not always). Plus the most adorable little butts. Some have pawprint, hoof, or other "hand" symbols on the limbs, plus a variety of embroidery decorations. Some also have "bones" which is an internal skeleton made of armature for better posing. Or an armature skeleton can be added to any "boneless" doll if you're comfortable ripping seams and sewing them back up. They do not come blushed but many collectors like to add blushing to their plushies. Similar to BJD, you typically buy the plushies nude, though "fullsets" do exist, most of which seem to be for popular characters like from Geshin Impact. Clothing often comes in sets for these plushies with mutliple pieces.

A lot of these are found on Weibo or other Chinese social media sites. They don't seem known much in the Western market. And it's my understanding that many of these are small artist made plushies/outfits. I searched around the forum and didn't see a topic on them already established so thought I may see if anyone else is into these cute plushies.

(If any of the above info is wrong, please let me know and I will change it. I do not claim to be any expert on these plushies. All images linked above were found online to show some of their traits.)

      -------------------------------
So far I have 5 plushies (with 4 more on the way and a few outfits).

Left is kpop associated that I think is jungkook from BTS. (I'm not into kpop much, I just liked that he looks like Rin Okumura from Ao no Exorcist. :sweat) Middle and right are non-attributes. All three have bones.

These two are based on The Untamed which is a popular Chinese series. They are both on the chubby body and are boneless.

And finally, my incoming plushies. All are non-attribute except for the bottom right which is based on Wang Yibo, a popular Chinese actor in The Untamed.

    2. I love them so much! I'd love to have one of my own. Where have you bought them?

    3. There's a company called Cosmile and another called Cosmini that I've ordered a few from. Have also picked up a few secondhand on Carousell and Mercari. Taobao seems to have a decent selection of them too but I haven't ordered any from there yet. I've stumbled upon some IG accounts and Facebook or Weibo groups that seem to do preorders or group orders for them but they're not in English and I have no idea if they can ship to the US. Many of them only seem available from Chinese sites and I assume would require a proxy of some sort.

    4. I have a few of BTS fan made plushies like these. They are cute, but I decided to skip on collecting these. I think I will occasionally collect these, but I prefer the official BT21 plushies especially the ones from Japan.

They can get expensive for being small and in my opinion not the best on "quality", but the cuteness makes up for it. I only own BTS ones, but decided against spending money on it because there is so many plushies I prefer over these like BT21, SAN-X, sanrio, etc. I have to say they are incredibly cute and hard hard resist. I can see why people collect so many. When it comes to BTS there is an abundance of merch I can easily skip over these types of cute plushies once I thought clearly on the reasons on why I was so hesitant on these plushies.

      Example of fan made plushies:

Pyu Pyu House BTS dolls (@pyupyuhouse) • Instagram photos and videos

Very cute and hard to resist
You are probably not into BTS, but I thought you might like these cute ones.

    5. I actually started with a couple of the fan made BTS and EXO plushies. Not because they were kpop affiliated specifically but because I randomly purchased a small lot of them off ebay on a whim which got me digging deeper into what these plushies were. I've rehomed all the ones from that initial lot but I still have the one kpop plush I specifically got because he looks like one of my favorite anime characters (and I plan to make him his outfit). Kinda dove into these plushies more because compared to bjd prices they're a lot more easy on the wallet. :sweat

    6. Do you want some links for other plushies I think you might like and are more affordable then bjds?

      @Cap'n
Sorry I only know of the fan made kpop types. If i come across these i will update my post. I think I recall seeing these a year or two ago, but didn't save any of the links. Do you like plushies like lumichee? They aren't customizable just cute plushies. Do you know of amiami? They sell anime plushies not like the ones above, but are sort of similar. I know amiami sell some tiny somewhat customizable dolls as well with little cute sets and outfits.

      AmiAmi [Character & Hobby Shop]

It seems ringdoll sells these types of plush sometimes:

Sorry I can't be that helpful, but here is an instagram link that shows a lot of these plushies.

Sorry i tried adding an image, but I can't figure out why it won't work. These are really cute SpongeBob themed.

      Edit:
This seller seems to make BTS and anime ones.

    7. If you have links for places to get these 20cm dolls and/or their clothes, then yes please! Big reason I like these plushies is I can play dress up like a bjd. Plus the ones I have have been super good quality (though I don't think mine now are the "fan-made" type you mentioned). I'm at least limiting myself to only 20cm size.

    8. Ohh I love these so much! I have so many I’ve lost count I think it’s around 40 of them they are all base on bts members. I’ve got all different sizes from 10cm to 40cm I’ve been collecting for 3 years now. I mostly buy them through GO on twitter or I buy from Japan secondhand for ones I’ve missed out on

    9. Please share pics! Would love to see your plushie hoard. :XD:

Edit: Also since you seem to be more informed on these plush types, do you happen to know what sort of blushing is used to blush them? I've seen video tutorials but all the products shown are in Chinese so I'm not sure what sort of blush it is.

    10. ive seen these dolls on taobao. my favorite game Shining Nikki has a collaboration with one of these doll companies which is how i first discovered them. I think the company is strawberry universe (草莓宇宙娃屋)on Taobao. They sell many other very cute dolls and i think they sell clothes too?

    11. I was curious about these little guys!! I'd seen them around on Taobao but I couldn't figure out how to learn more about them, thanks for the info! Some of them are so painfully cute, I'd love to get a hold of one sometime

      • x 1
    12. @Cap'n yes definitely will when I get a few more incoming dolls in the mail
For the blush it’s just regular makeup blush for people. I’ve had my dolls for a long time and I’m surprise the blushing doesn’t seem to fade. But if u decide you don’t like the blush or you mess up u can also take 100% acetone nail polish remover

      • x 1
    13. @ellie
Oh wow, I never would have guessed makeup. I figured it was something like chalk pastel. Human makeup blush won't just come off? Guess I'll have to try my hand at blushing now.

    14. I've been interested in these dolls for a bit! They look so cute, I'd love to get one one day.... Also, there seems to be a company that makes them too called omodoki? There seems to a little bit more western/english-speaking stuff for that (at least, there's actual search results for them lol) It looks like you could also get some from Etsy?

    15. My plush with the white hair is from Omodoki, though I got it via Cosmile. Omodoki sell on taobao primarily and are on twitter under the username omodoki_omo.
Also most of the etsy items for these plushies are at inflated prices from what I've seen. I just ordered a plush from Cosmile a week ago for $31 total (after tax and including ship) and the same plush is listed by an etsy shop for $53 (before tax). There are a few etsy shops that make custom plushes (for quite a bit more as custom items tend to be) but the majority of the etsy shops I've seen that offer these plushies or their clothes seem to be resellers/drop shippers.

    16. Honestly they look a lot like Japanese anime charcter plush/UFO anime plush which have been avlaible on the japanese market for decades but the hair and eyes are a bit nicer done which seems partly done them been a bit more expensive and less mass produced. And the clothes come off I suppose so more of an emphasis on redressing. It's really intresting to see how the Chinese fandoms in paticular (I guess due to encreased middle class and more open economy) have been reinventing all the the old fandom staples in their own style.

    17. I've had the plushies you're referring to and other than style and size, they're pretty different in terms of quality. Those anime plushies always seemed to be pretty cheaply made. I had one at one point that parts of the hair were literally glued on. And their faces often looked really derpy. Cotton Dolls are more like I wanted those anime plushies to be back when I was a cringy anime-obcessed teenaged. There's even many anime character Cotton Dolls I've stumbled upon. I'm currently trying to find where I can order an Inuyasha one to appease my inner anime-obcessed teen self once again. I found a maker that makes his outfit already. :D

Also from what I remember, those anime Dolls were not cheap in terms of price. I remember paying $25-$40 for some of them only because it was a plush version of my favorite anime character that otherwise didn't get much merchandise made.

      • x 2
    18. I used to collect them! I have them to thank for me being more open to bjd prices haha. I have a bunch of 15cm ones and it's so hard to look for clothes for them. All the nice ones are 20cm!

I don't collect them as much anymore because 1) space, 2) hard to shop for, 3) they start to look a bit samey after a while.

    19. I just ordered my first cotton doll plush a few weeks ago, hoping he will arrive soon. It’s a wolf Link from the Legend of Zelda.

I love what you wrote @Cap'n about these being like the plushies you always wished for when you were younger. I’m hoping I feel that way, too, since by just looking at these I can see more work has been put into them. Plus I’ve always wanted a Twilight Princess Link plushie to put wolf ears on and now one exists that’s super cute!

I have just one and he isn't inspired by any idol or character, I got him off an platform that sells secondhand items, it's called XianYu, based in China!

That platform also has custom made dolls at prices much cheaper than the ones found on Etsy, I see many shops on Xianyu selling custom made clothing and accessories for a variety of sizes too! The only trouble is finding a proxy to shop for you there.

I really wish the online international marketplace for 棉花娃娃 can be much more expansive! Especially in Japan/Korea/China, such dolls seem more widely accepted and popular as compared to BJDs.

    21. I am now up to 9 plushies and still eyeing more. So many cuties keep popping up. Also added bones to a couple of them and they all have added blushing. :whee:

Your plush is so cute! Love his expression. And thanks for the info! I've found that most Etsy sellers are just resellers with large markups, similar to all those taobao bjd items resellers. And I really hope these get more popular in the Western market too so I don't have to have as much difficulty getting more of them.

    22. I finally got my Wolf Link! He’s so cute!! I guess I need to add some pink to his cheeks, but beyond that he’s great right out of the box. His ears and tail are removable, too, which I didn’t expect. I want to sew his Ordon Village outfit, but for now he’s in a nice snuggly hoodie.

I can definitely see how these plush are so addicting. Your collection is amazing @Cap'n !

    23. I only choked on my own spit when I saw the Chen Si doll.

    24. He's so cute! I have that plush on my wishlist and am glad to know he has removable ears. My winter fox plushie does not. Makes head accessories limited. Not every listing indicates if ears are removable or not so it's kind of a surprise upon arrival. Tails at least always seem to be removeable though.

Also I saw a BotW Link Gerudo outfit the other day for these plushies and am very tempted. :XD:

      • x 1
    25. A Gerudo outfit would be hilarious and cute! When I bought this one, the seller had the Ordon village outfit, too, but then said there wasn’t enough demand for it so that sale didn’t go through. I really wanted that outfit. :( I’m not brave enough to try shopping with proxies, but I can try making it myself once I get a minute between my BJD projects, lol.

    26. Been a while since I posted here~
Still very much into these plushies and snapped a group photo of all of my current 20cm (and one 15cm) plushies as I was organizing their closet/re-dressing them. Not shown is two 40cm, two incoming 20cm (non-attribute shark and TotK Link), and an overabundance of outfits.

I know I've acquired a lot of them already but it makes more sense when you think in terms that all of these plushies roughly have the value of one BJD (depending on company). Compared to BJd prices, these plushies are way too affordable.

      • x 3
    27. @Cap'n They're all so cute!!!! I also ordered a TotK Link, we can have twinsies!

I finally got a green tunic for my Twilight Link, and I made an Ordon Village outfit for him (that I should probably photograph at some point). I guess I should try sewing a TotK outfit so new Link won't be nekkid when he eventually gets here.

      Twilight wearing his green tunic:

These guys are definitely addictive, but I'm trying to keep my focus narrow and stick with LoZ plush (although I did get a cute pink bunny girl because cute). Let's see how long that lasts. :XD:

    28. I love these dolls, although I'm just recently learning about them for the first time. They are so cute but I'm not sure the safest place to buy, some of the prices seem too cheap to be true? Is $20-50 USD a normal price for these dolls?

Edit: I found the shop for Cosmini on ebay. Do the dolls with long hair come with the wig? Do they have the skeleton or not? There's not a lot of information in the descriptions.

    29. ~$30 is standard priced for these plushies and most I paid for one was ~$50. Cosmini and Cosmile are good dealers for them and they typically order them from taobao. They're more expensive than buying direct but easier to aquire imo so worth the ease of access.

Not all of the ones with "hair" wear wigs and it can be difficult to tell those that do, especially with Cosmini and Cosmile since they do not show many photos (often having a single photo available for a plush). If you reverse image search a plush pic, you might be able to find the Weibo of the maker with more photos. Also typically 90% of the plushies available from Cosmini and Cosmile do not have skeletons by default. Few of their listings have the option for a skeleton version but those without that option it is safe to assume they do not have a skeleton. I add my own skeletons to the majority or my plushies.

      • x 2
    30. @Cap'n Thanks so much for all of the info!! :D I agree it's worth a bit of markup to not have to try and navigate Taobao and Weibo, as long as I'm getting the same item. As I should have done before asking LOL, I did reach out to Cosmini with my questions, and they were able to answer me about the hair (it's sewn to the doll, which is great IMO, although I didn't get the one with wig-like hair after all) and share additional pics of the doll without me having to look it up. They also told me they can add a skeleton to any doll for an extra fee, for anyone wondering, of course if you can do it yourself then there's no need. :3nodding: I bought a cute girl on pre-order, and decided to forego the skeleton, knowing now that I could add one later if I wanted. I can't wait to get her!!! :love I was thinking of also getting a boy, but I'm too picky :frownyblush: so I'll have to wait a while and hope one like I want appears :eusa_pray

In any case, they definitely remind me of the anime UFO Catchers, but leveled up :dance Not only can you actually dress them up, but the hair and face are much more lovely! I also love that some of them have designs on their hands, feet, and tummies. If I had an embroidery machine, I'd make about a million of them :abambi: Since I don't, I hope more and more artists start making these dolls, because they're such a cute combination of doll and plush!

    31. I got one from Aidolhouse recently
He's the Hueningkai from TomorrowxTogether one and he's just precious!!
I'm getting their Beomgyu as well

    32. They remind me of the anime plushies you used to see back in the day but with the cuteness and complexity dialed up to 100! I have a little ita bag that's more for plushes than pins that I haven't known what to do with but I imagine one or two of these little guys would fit perfectly.

    33. @samovely Not sure of the source media your plush is from but that penguin overall is adorable on him! I really love dressing my character plushies wildly different from their existing media style. If I wanna put Raymond in a baby onesie, he's getting a baby onesie put on!

@Anneko These plushies are very much like those old anime plushies but so much more well made. A page back I described them as "more like I wanted those anime plushies to be back when I was a cringy anime-obsessed teenager". I'd recommend measuring your ita bag first to make sure you get a plushie that can fit. These plushies come as small as 5cm these days but they're much wider than, say, a bjd would be in the same height. Most ita bags I've seen that can fit cotton dolls can only comfortably up to the 15cm ones.

    34. I don't have a cotton doll of my own, but I learned about them a year or so ago, and they are soooo cute!!! They look so plump and huggable. :whee: At a time I ended up finding what seemed to be a base pattern that artists use to send to the manufactures or when they sew it themselves, but I don't have an embroidery machine so I didn't pursue making one for myself. Your thread makes me want to consider buying one sometime soon though haha, maybe one that looks similar to an OC or maybe an anime related one. :aeyepop:

    35. Got a little non-attribute shark plush in. Will have to get him a shark themed outfit eventually. <3
      [IMG]

They're honestly super affordable to buy compared to how much money and effort would go into making one. I've found many patterns to make them and clothes for them, but when a plush is only around $30 and an outfit only around $25, I would spend at least that in materials. That said, custom OC plushies omg. :whee:

    36. How cute, I love his little teeths!! :XD: And beautiful eyes!!

I actually found some youtube videos about making these dolls. I was shocked to learn that the adorable faces are embroidered by hand! They look so neat, I was sure it was done by machine! :o

    37. Ah I didn't know there was a thread for Kpop dolls! Also didn't know they were called 'cotton dolls'. I have a pretty big collection of these guys. All the BTS boys (with 2 Namjoons ), 3 EXOs, 2 SKZoo dolls and as of last week, 3 NCT boys. I usually refer to them as 'The colony' as they were steadily growing in number and taking up space on my bed, lol. This past weekend I decided there were just too many and build hot airballoon themed shelves for them!
I would love to share photos but for the life of me can't figure out how to share pictures on this forum.

To share photos, you need to first upload your photo to an image hosting site. Then you can grab the URL code to link to the image. DOA doesn't host images. Some popular image hosting sites include Imgur and Flicker.

    39. The cotton doll I ordered got cancelled :...( Does it happen often? The seller said they didn't get enough orders to produce it. I'm super bummed out! I totally would have bought twins or triplets if it meant I could have her! :frownyblush:

    40. That can happen if the plushies are on pre-order unfortunately. Basically if they don't get X amount of orders, they can't make the plushies. I haven't jumped onto any plushie preorders specifically because they have a chance of not meeting the goal. Though there are a few lesser known characters from media that if plushies were on preorder based on them, I'd probably jump on the order. :sweat

      • x 1
    41. I see! I guess that's the risk with preorders:( I preordered another girl, and I hope she gets enough orders :eusa_pray cosmile lists her as no attributes while cosmini lists her as an impact-series character, who I looked up images of, and she barely resembles that character :sweat I hope the impact fans will fluff up those preorder numbers!! If this one falls through I'll stick to in-stocks like you :thumbup I really want to get my hands on one of these cuties!

    42. I've been seeing these everywhere and they're soo cute. I got what I think is a BTS member at an antique shop of all places lol. I've been meaning to blush him but didn't expect people to be using human makeup.

Do the bones make a big difference? Their limbs are short so it's hard to tell if they would be able to move much.

    43. My TotK Link arrived just in time! <3
      [IMG]

Personal preference. I like my plushies to be able to sit, which they can't really hold that pose if they don't have bones. Also raising the arms. Some of the fatter body plushies can be hard to pose even with bones. Plus the bones make for a nice fidget toy and there are both silent and "noise" versions. Noise just make a clicking when you move the skeleton which can get annoying imo. There's also a certain type of skeleton to install if you want to be able to turn the head from side to side and keep the pose.

Here's an example of the skeleton in use in my newest plush~

    44. He's so cute @Cap'n ! Mine is still sitting in shipping hell (aka the tracking hasn't updated ever and the company is looking into it) so maybe he will pop up soon.

I did 'accidentally' buy an Inuyasha plush so I guess I already broke my rule twice now.

    45. I feel like we're twins because I've been eyeing an Inuyasha plush for a bit! Which one are you getting? Also I may have ordered a Miku plush this morning.

      • x 1
    46. Hahaha, we are twins! Great minds, right? I'm getting this lil guy (with outfit hopefully):

I'm hoping the shipping gets sorted out for Link, but it seems Inuyasha is well on his way. :thumbup

Miku!! I saw a few of them and was super tempted, she is a cutie.

      • x 1
    47. @Aiko-chan Hopefully they can track down your Link! He's probably lost in the Gerudo Highlands somewhere. Or in one of the Labyrinths.

Because of you I ended up ordering the Inuyasha plush I've been eyeing. I like the less sweet/innocent looking ones of him so I just had to get this one.

And this is the Miku I ordered. The face won me over. <3

    48. Ahhh! I almost ordered that Inuyasha because he has the most amazing face! His little teeth made it hard to decide, they are so darn cute. I'm so glad you ordered him @Cap'n ! I may end up stitching a tooth on mine just because I love that look so much.

And that Miku, omg, her face!!!! She is so beyond adorable!! I love that stare  Congrats on them both!

    49. Oh, can you share a link to the shop? This guy is sooo cute! I was a big Inuyasha fan as a teen!

    50. Sure @Miss_Lovely791 ! It's a store on eBay called CosmileTime. They have a lot of plush, as well as some other collectible items.

    52. My Inuyasha finally arrived home! TotK Link got lost, though, so another one will hopefully be sent soon.

    53. Ahh I adore them both! Hoping to find a Koga plush some day. Absolutely love how you shell your favorite characters into dolls. And Koga with chibi Inuyasha is hilarious. :XD:

    54. Awww, thanks @Cap'n ! A Koga plush would make me so happy. This Koga, however, says he likes his doll form because it is an accurate height representation of him and Inuyasha.:mwahaha

    55. These little guys are just entirely too cute... and I'm trying very, very hard to convince myself that I do *not* need one in the crew.

Even though there's one over on Etsy that looks just like a chibi version of my favorite Abyssal...
And having a cloffie-Al to go with the resin one would make me grin. Like, a lot.

@Cap'n gave me this lil cutie so I blame her for any and all future purchases. :XD:

    57. She's too cute @SaltedPretzel !!! Do you have a name for her?

@Brightfires good luck resisting the urge to get one! I tried and failed...multiple times. :XD:

    58. I've decided to call her Hamigaki-chan. (歯磨き) It means tooth brushing/toothpaste in Japanese. She has little braces so I figured it fit!

    59. I just stumbled across a bunch of these on Taobao, I think they may be dangerous for me.

I ordered one and will see how much I like them in person before going nuts, though.

    60. I was wondering if there was a thread for these! Currently I have a few Genshin Impact ones-- two Xiaos, Itto, Bennett, and Fischl. They are just the cutest little things and I love shopping for clothes for them almost as much as I do for my BJD/vinyl girls! The 20cm size is perfect. I feel like I'm shopping for real life babies-- but quieter and less messy :XD::XD::XD:
