Maintenance Cord thickness question

Jul 26, 2025

    1. Quick question, and possibly a silly one. Can you string a doll with too thick of cord? Is that even possible?

I was recently with some other collectors, and and it was pointed out that two of my 1/6 size dolls (a Bluefairy Shiny Fairy and a Volks YoSD) are strung with a cord thickness usually/most often used for 1/3 sized dolls.

I had recently restrung them using cord I had around, and it did manage to fit in the arm and leg channels without what seems like issue. The hand s hooks do seem to fit over the cord, but it is a little tight of a fit though. I might just be paranoid though.

It's been a while since I bought that cord, so I can't remember the exact thickness (either 3.5mm or 4mm) because I had read at some point about trying a thicker string with my Daydream Sally for her to pose better.

I'm just curious, will having my dolls strung this way have possible long term damage risks? Thank you!

    2. You can, but if it still poses than thicker cord is fine. Likewise you can use too thin of cord for some dolls. However again if it poses fine then whatever works works. but normally the smaller the doll/parts the thinner the cords should be. Thicker cords in a smaller doll can make it more stable, and sometimes help it hold a pose. Sometimes it can make posing hard, or unable to pose. So there is some trial and error in it.

    3. My doll in my pfp is an iplehouse nSID and she came with extremely thick elastic through her torso, and it made her very loose. So I tried the elastic in my luts ssdf and it worked very well, and I gave my Iplehouse thinner elastic and while she's not a very good poser at all, she can sit prettily.

    4. If the doll poses fine there should be no problem. I think the only damage risks would be when doing the opposite (stringing too tight with too thin elastic). Thick elastic is just too hard to pull tight enough to make it anywhere near a hazard with such a small doll.

I've strung some of my 1/4 dolls with much thicker elastic to make the posing more stable - sometimes dolls just have bigger holes in the limbs and joints that allow sizing up, and sometimes the size-appropriate string is way too thin for the doll, too. The only elastic that is way too thick is the one that doesn't fit through the channels - doesn't seem like this is a problem in your case so you're all good :)

    5. If the elastic fits and works, then it's not too thick, is my take on it.

    6. Awesome! I have no difficulties posing them, so it looks like I'm good! Thank you so much to everyone who replied!:D

It's good to know my paranoia is misplaced!

    7. Yeah, but still better safe than sorry. Now you know instead of worrying,
