Coppelia [She is finished! 12/26/06 Photos (nudity and the completed outfit!) Pg5)]

Jul 3, 2006

1. Well sanding is just about finished, she's all smooth, but I have a couple of dents and the odd rough patch to smooth out.

I didn't sand the left forearm because I'm going to make 2 molds of the right side one instead.

Still here she is having a well deserved sit down. It's a little hard to see all the details because she's so white, I keep losing the shadows!

I have my mold making silicone on order, as well as resin. Keeping my fingers crossed the molds work out ok

2. The anime isn't so great, but the music is really nice. I have a lot of it saved on the compy.

3. She looks great!

4. I can't believe how smooth your doll is! :aheartbea

5. She is looking pretty cool, Lollipop :) I can't wait to see her strung and wigged. The dolls really come into their own when they have the little finishing touches. It is amazing the amount of talent found in this group :sumomo:

6. I couldn't either when I saw, I think she might be a little too smooth, or rather too shiny. I started matting her down a bit so hopefully she'll be perfect soon enough *crosses fingers*

7. I have a wig for her already, but I can't wait to see her strung either! Even more excited for what she'll look like with a face up.

I don't think a doll really has much till at that's done. i guess it's the customizations that really bring them into their own?

I have confirmation that the silicone has been shipped, so I'm shooting to get the molds made over the weekend, which will leave next week for casting and customizing!

8. wow..I just found this thread..and was tottally blown away! you are really talented! and your girl is pretty and cute! I can't wait to see her clothed and wigged and just plain finished! by the way good luck with the molds! (is truly in love with Coppelia)

9. She has such a sweet expression! It always amazes me how creative and talented some people are. ^^

10. She's turning out AWESOME -- I've been having so much fun following your progress pics :D

What did you wind up using as the final outer surface to get that wonderful smoothness?

Congrats again on doing an excellent job with her!

-- A <3

11. You guys are so sweet. I'm so glad you like her. I really wanted to make a slightly more mature mini who was cute, but could also look a more grown up. Grown ups can be cute too!!!!!

Going to make a test mold to start with and see if it works, then we have a long weekend to get going on the big ones!

To get her so smooth I started out sanding the sculpey with a not so fine 150 grit to get rid of any lumps and bumps, then coated her in gesso (I used brush on, and getting rid of the brush lines was a pest, but they have spray on gesso these days!) I sanded that pretty much egg shell smooth, then sprayed her with Mr White Surfacer 1000 I found at the local hobby shop. That filled in any tiny scratches, evened out where the sculpey started to come through the gesso, and left her with a nice ultra smooth finish! The only thing with the white surfacer, when it builds up it dents pretty easy, so it's best to keep the coated parts somewhere safe till it's time to mold I think.

I'm going to try the Flat Mr Super Clear to matt her down a little and she should be good to go I hope?

12. ok this may sound odd but i LOVE her hips.

13. *takes notes* Thank you!!

-- A :D

14. That doesn't sound odd at all! The hips are my favorite bit too, I just think hips are so sexy!

15. I began committing my little girl to the goo today. i was getting worried that my surface texture obsession was going to lead to me ruining everything and decided to quit faffing and start molding!

It's terrifying and exciting all at the same time. Just sad that neither my silicone nor my Legos went as far as I had hoped.

Still you come so far, too late to back out now.

16. You used legos?! That's so cool! What a good idea!!! :D Please let us know how this works out! I'm on pins and needles, I can't wait to see how the mold turns out!! :love

17. I´m so nervous to see Coppelia finished *w*

18. The silicone can be reused, or so I've heard. It can be chopped up finely in a food processor and used as a filler with new silicone to make molds incase you get a bad mold or only want to cast one and want to try to use the same silicone for other body parts. You'd have to ask Batchix for clarification on that, though.

19. Interesting. I have like a thousand old molds made out of this stuff I could use too if that works out?

20. :abambi: It's the first time I look in this thread, and the first time I see a hand-made BJD. :aeyepop:
I admire you so much! You're so talented, really!
I think your creation is something unbelievable :love

21. good luck on Molding! unique Idea using legos....(I lost my legos when I wash lil...)

22. Thanks so much :sweat It's been fun making her so far. There are a good few people on here making some great dolls, is a great forum section to look around!

23. It was funny we bought this giant Lego block filled with Legos on a whim one day, then when I got to molding I remembered the hobby shop guy saying about how legos made good mold boxes ages ago and figured it's worth a try.

Haver to say best way ever to make mold boxes!

24. wai! that's awsome1 I hope all goes well!

25. Could you please tell us how you're molding&casting the hollow parts? I can tell something from the pics you posted, but not enough. I'm still trying to figure out how to hollow cast and some help would be greatly appreciated:) Good luck on finishing your pretty girl!

26. The limbs I'm going to be drilling, same with her butt, the head I made the mold in 3 pieces, so one for each side, and one for the hollowing out of the head, if you look at the mold photos, the colum coming up out of the head goes all the way around and down.

The torso I'm doing as just 2 pices, with the back mold pice going up into the chest cavety. if that all makes sence?

There is a useful site about posted here on DOA in fact! http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24965

27. Thanks very much:)

28. :o wah! she grew up while i was away!!
She's so lovely. :3 I would just about buy her, if i didn't already promis myself to two dolls. XD
I have been watching this thread for a long time. And have been in awe of your sculpting talents! Still don't believe it's sculpey:fangirl:

29. :aeyepop:

It's... the Gerber baby on a sexy body!! Oh I hope your molding has come out well!!!!!:eusa_pray

And this is an awesome thread. I really have enjoyed looking at it as you can really see her coming to life. 'Cept now I can't get Kopperia no Hitsugi out of my head. :doh

30. I still want her... SO badly. -Looks in wallet- $1.85. Hmm... I don't think that'll buy me anything. ><. If you do a few casts and sell them... I probably won't be able to afford. ;o; But I want her SO badly... she's perfect for one of my character. Ugh! I want to eat her up!

31. Soooo I cast my first head and it had a bubble problem, the 2nd one the pigment and the resin I'm guessing don't work well together, and the head took for ever to cure (like days) and ripped the mold, Bugger.

Any whoo after a trip to the UK and getting my 10lb box of silicone I'm getting ready to start molding again! Figure if all goes well, I should have a resin doll to show you all next weekend! The girl has clothes, shes hair, eyes and jewelry, she just needs you know, a body!

(It's good to set goals, makes me get to work and stop messing about!)

32. *cheers* :D

onward! lolipop! :D

33. Oh gawd. It's looking so good so far. i can't wait to see how it looks finished. So much talent you have. ^_^

34. she has such a nice body! and a very cute face.:aheartbea

35. ZOMG; I'm thoroughly impressed at your talent - she's such a precious girl!! :fangirl: Please post updates on her when you can. X3

36. She's wonderful; I love watching her being made.

37. Thanks you guys! I started casting her over the weekend, if I can just get the last couple of molds finished I'll have a resin photo this week *fingers crossed*

38. Amazing girl !!!!
^__^

39. She's done at last!!!! After October it was hard finding time to work on her, but yesterday I finished and she's now standing on her own 2 feet!

Coppelia says "Hi!"

And here in all her EGL princess glory!

I was so happy when I gout her strung and she stood up. I've never held or seen a BJD in real life, and was worried making one that could stand would be a very precise job. I guess not.

She poses pretty well for me i think, and can't wait to finally take some gallery photos! (But I'm going to wait till I have her outfit completed before I rush into it.) (also got to get the lighting to really pick up her facial features, they seem to keep getting washed out in my people strength lamps :sweat )

40. I'm deeply amazed. You created a doll for your very own. It must be a labor of love to do that. Congratulations. :)

41. It was, but worth it! I'd recommend doing it to any one, plus after the first one, all you need to sculpt is a new head every time you fancy another doll!

42. She's quite lovely. Congratulations on your endeavors

43. How sweet she is! Its nice to see her all painted up.

You're always welcome to ask me to drag one of my dolls to the store so you can see them XD I'd love to see her, too!

44. aww... she's precious!! :D

45. She's beautiful!
That is so cool that you made your own doll!
I wish I was that talented......

46. Hard to believe...you are such a genious~!
She's in resin? Was it white (before colouring)? Could you please tell me the brand?
Coz I used Mark III...so bubblery and soooo white, not a tiny bit of transparency...Orz
Thank you.

47. She is friggin' adorable. *claps*

48. Huzzah!!!

She turned out absolutely wonderful!! SO pretty, and what a lovely job you did on the body. Congratulations!!!

49. HaH! And you've never seen a BJD in real life???!!!!
gawd! * Mich goes off deflated!*

50. Thanks so mcuh! I loved your heads an tiny so much in your other threads!

But yeah she's resin. I used the Alumilite white resin for her, and bought a bottle of their Caucasian skin tone pigment. After that I added 4 drops of the pigment to the part A in the bottle and that's how I got the skin tone.

The cool thing is I ran out of resin half way through and had to dye a 2nd batch, using the "count the drops" method the color of both batches is as close as you can get to identical (the top half of the torso and her right leg are 2nd batch)

The only sucky thing is, still bubbly :( You cant see in the photos but she has a fair amount of tinny bubble clusters on the surface in places.

I've heard that heating the molds in a microwave, or dusting them with oil free talc help with that though? I also found the ones I had to recast a few times, they got better after the first few times, probably due to less crap left on the molds like mold release etc.

I think to get a totally bubble free cast we'll need to either pressure cast em, or de-gas the resin first. :(

51. I might have to take you up on that once the Xmas crazy is finished! I bet she'd love a play date;)

52. Thanks! She's my little girl and I love her to bits!

Thanks, I bet you could do it too if you tried! All it takes is patience.

Thanks so much!! *Dolly takes a bow*

Glad you think so! the body took so long, I feel kinds bad hiding it with clothes now, but I don't want to end up being pervy naked doll lady:sweat

No deflation we need you 3D!!! I have to admit though I hadn't seen one in real life, there are lots of detailed photos about on this forum, so it wasn't too bad for getting an idea. After that it was trial and error, you should have seen the shocking first attempt at a torso joint!

53. Lovely, lovely! Such talent!

54. She is so cute perfect for goth lolita clothing, great work!

55. She came out wonderful! I love her face. It's just so cute with the slight puddgey ness. I love it. ^_^ Great job!!

56. its been a real treat following your progress. Very inspriational.

57. She's beautiful! Well done! :whee:

58. Thank you for viewing my other post~>< Good to hear that you can dye the resin two times and get the same colour~haha~
the Alumilite white resin looks cool~but shipping is too high to Canada...so before I buy it could you show me any detail of your best cast? wanna see how much bubbles there actually are, and then I can compair with MarkII~ I don't mean to see your bubbly Coppelia, but you know...>< forgot to say that I also love her dress and crown. What a princess~!
You should definately try heating the mold~or maybe...using baby powder(what the)...somebody told me that he put a little amount of Johnson baby powder into the mold and then shake it out as much as you can, just leave a minimun amount of it on the mold and then pour resin in...and that worked for him...:sweat
By the way, do you know weather there are other white resins which are good for doll casting? [edit]ok, I found this one, http://www.smooth-on.com/PDF/300series.pdf looks great~and I'll go buy it tomorrow if the outlet close to my place has it. =w= [edit]
Thank you~:aheartbea

59. Congratulations .. she is looking great ... she is such a cutie :)

60. Absolutely beautiful!!! I love her "I'm the princess, bow to me" look.
