Cookie - 30cm Teen Girl

Jul 12, 2010

    1. I decided I would go ahead and open up a WIP thread for Cookie since I have finally busted out the clay on her. :XD She's going to be a roughly 30cm tall doll with a more mature body. I'm basing her off of some of my illustrations, so I'm aiming to have her a little more cartoony.

Here are the old planning sketches before I made adjustments from the advice I got in critique. I re-adjusted her balance in the profile and made her hip section more attractive and less thin.

After cutting all of my cores out of foam I went ahead and applied the clay last night and I am letting it go ahead and sit extra long so I am sure it is completely dry before I start working on her again. I am using the techniques in the Yoshida Style book this time to make her, and it's also my first time using La-Doll and Premier clay. The clay is.....intresting, but so far I think I may be liking it better than super sculpey. :)

The reason she has toothpicks coming out of the bottoms of her feet is because the ankles of my cores snapped. :( Anyway I'll post more progress as I go along.

    2. I like her concept drawings^^ looking good so far. hehe, that sounds like my thought process when i first switched to ladoll :P

    3. Thanks Higgy, :) I just hope I can make her look as cute as her concept drawing. I am still finding La-Doll clay interesting as I start the sanding process. I think both La-Doll and Super Sculpey have their good qualities, but so far I am liking not having to bake the clay, and I like that it's not as super malleable as sculpey is when it gets warm.

    4. I really like the concept drawing. The modeling is coming along nicely, as well. I look forward to seeing more progress, especially how you work the joints. All the Best. KW

    5. OK, I've got some progress to post. For some reason I decided to start sculpting the body first instead of the head....maybe it's out of fear! lol :XD Anyway basically all I've done in these progress shots has been to sand and carve down the base form. I plan to add fresh clay next to form her bust and behind and whatnot.

I also had a little sorta accident with sanding and I ended up sanding down to the foam core, which is noticeable in the pics. Because I plan to add to the bust with new clay I figure it's not a horrible mishap, that and after I carve out the foam I can always add clay on the inside.

    6. Thanks KW. :) I've been puzzling over how to do the knee joints. I like the look of the single joint, but I like the poseability of of the double joints.

    7. Today's progress....I added to and shaped up her bust and started sanding a little finer. Got started on the legs and begun sanding. One leg stands on it's own, but the other I came to realize that the foot it cocked in the wrong direction so it's going to take more work. XP

Still have a lot more tweaking to do on the body. I think starting with the body first has helped me become more comfortable with the La-Doll clay, so I may go for it and get more modeling done on the head next.

    8. those legs are so shapely! very nice progress

    9. I decided it was time to set to work on her face. Obviously a lot of work still needs to be done here, but the clay is just getting way too squishy so I've decided to let it dry overnight and then I will add more to her tomorrow.

boy her nose looks really terrible right now!

    10. Her lips and eyes look great!

Got a little more work done on Cookie's face. I still have some symmetry issues to work out and whatnot, but I am satisfied with the direction things are headed.

    12. very cute!!!

    13. She's doing quite well. Keep up the good work! :)

    14. Oh wow
      That's awesome!
I am enjoying watching your progress!
      :)

    15. It's been a while but I've resumed working on this girl. Here are a couple progress shots...

Her head has changed quite a lot from the beginning. I still have lots of tweaking to do yet though.

I've also begun the jointing process. I had a mishap with the right leg where the styrofoam core shifted which has left too much clay in areas where there shouldn't be. It's going to take extra work to get that joint done. I can't wait until I can get the joints to where I can do a test stringing, but unfortunately I probably won't be able to work on her for a few days since I apparently gave myself a shallow cut on my finger with one of my carving tools that ended up taking some skin off. I didn't notice it until morning and by then it was all swollen. So it's bandaged with antibiotic ointment now...sigh.

    16. very sweet face!!!!

    17. Thanks! :blush

    18. I can't wait to see how you are going to go about your jointing process. Are you going to be making your joints with your clay? She looks great so far! Good luck with your finger!

    19. Thanks! :) Yeah, I'm making the joints out of the clay and following the instructions in the Yoshida Style Ball Jointed Doll Making Guide. I really hope I can make some headway on those joints soon!

    20. I made a little more progress on the head sculpt. The eyes don't look as large to me as they are in the sketch, but in order to make the eyes larger I would have to switch to 16mm eyes and they don't fit as well at the 14mms inside the head. I also thought I might give her a little more volume in her cheeks, but I think I mostly succeeded in making her look puffy. ^^;; Anyway I'd like to hear some feedback on the size of her eyes in relation to the other features on her face. Like them? hate them? Am I just being too fussy? ^w^;; haha~

    21. I think they look very nice and apt, she has a nice innocence about her. Can't wait to see more :)

    22. The left eye (her right) Is a little too high. The face looks perfect other then that :)

    23. Thanks for the input! I've been tweaking things here and there so hopefully I will have some more progress photos soon. :)

    24. Very nice work, I'm looking forward to see your progress!
