Construction work - with LaDoll?

Apr 19, 2014

    1. Has anyone used Ladoll for the construction parts of a BJD - like the parts that hold the headcap in place or the joints?
I am currently sculpting two heads with Ladoll, and I can't decide how to construct the headcap. Some headcaps have a kind of hook to keep it in place, so you won't necessarily need magnets. I wonder if Ladoll is strong enough for something like this - or for any kind of construction work. The material seems quite soft and I'm scared that it will break.

Can Ladoll be used as a prototype material to make molds from? Any experiences?

    2. I'm using ladoll for my doll, and I've built a notch in her headcap that holds an S-hook. Holds up just fine. This clay is ridiculously soft, and once it dries it's really lightweight, but it's also very strong. So, it can definitely hold a hook.

As for moldmaking, never tried it, so I can't help there. Good luck =)

    3. LaDoll is not strong enough under too much pressure especially very thin parts. While LaDoll is strong I experienced a lot of cracking especially when adding moist clay. But as advised by Ryo Yoshida's book while working with LaDoll, you can apply modeling paste to strengthen (and seal) the piece to prepare for molding. This not only makes it hard but also moisture resistant which is important since LaDoll melts from water. I used modeling paste, gesso and grey acrylic mix before on my LaDoll piece to prepare for molding. Turned out great!

    4. OdooriKimura and mykeangelo, thanks a lot for your help. I was really amazed how soft LaDoll is. However, it makes it so easy to work with, especially when sanding.
I'm currently trying an acrylic modelling paste, it seems to work fine and also adds a nice texture.
