Casting Completely newbish resin casting question

Oct 13, 2007

    1. Ok, I did some searches for this, and didn't come upon the answer, but I apologize if this has been asked and answered in the past. :sweat

I read through Don's wonderful tutorial about casting hollow pieces with the 3-piece molds. I understand how that technique is used for hollow, 2 piece torsos. I've also read the great tutorial on head casting. What I am wondering about, are the string channels on arms and legs. Do most of you slush, or rotationally cast, for these pieces, or do you cast the pieces solid, then simply drill out the string channels? I'm still in the theoretical stages of this myself. I'm working on a tiny, and I am about 3/4 through the sculpting. I hope to begin making molds next month. She is a rather "tiny" tiny, just slightly larger than a naripon, so I'm wondering if casting her limbs solid, then using the dremel to make string channels afterwards, might be my easiest bet. What do you guys think?

    2. For a doll that is small, I could suggest casting it solid then drilling with a dremel...but you might want to set up a jig for the pieces so that you drill strait. Or if your not going to use any pressure casting, you could use very small straws, like coffee straws, set in keys in the mold and pull them out when your done (I think the pressure would crush them?). By the way, how big is a naripon (I've never seen one):sweat ?

    3. Does pressure casting crush the straws in larger dolls also? I was thinking of getting some of the bubble tea straws, but I might have to come up with a different idea.
