Comic-Con Int:San Diego 2014 BJD Meetup/Panel.Sunday, July 27, 2014 Noon-2PM

Jun 10, 2014

    1. Hello All!

Now that the grid has been finished, I can announce this year's panel/meetup at Comic-Con International in San Diego!

Comic-Con runs July 24-27, and the meetup is scheduled for Sunday, July 27 from 12pm-2pm. We are in the same room we used last year, Room 29A.

This year's panelists will include Bo Bergemann of Bergemann Dolls and Judy Johnson of The Doll Peddlar!

As always, you must have a membership to the convention to attend, as the panel/meetup is in the convention center. The meetup will begin with a short intro/discussion/Q&A, then the remaining time will be spent as meetup and photo time. We generally have a large variety of BJDs displayed, so feel free to join in!

Please keep in mind that there are no sales allowed in any of the program spaces.

As always, if there are any questions, please feel free to pm me :D

    2. Oooo i will be attending the convention! i was not intending to bring any of my dolls but perhaps i shall bring my yoyos... HMMM even if i do not bring them i will try and attend the panel/meet :D <3

    3. Woo Hoo! I am attendind SDCC for the first time this year. I was not planning to take any of my dolls with me, but now I'll reconsider bringing one of my YOs.
I'm glad there is an actual room to meet. Last year at NYCC it got so crowded that I never found the meetup group and ended up carrying him but not taking him out of the bag.
I got really big expectations for this CON. Do you have any suggestions for those with BJDs?
      So EXCITED!

    4. Went last year but didn't get to stay for the whole panel. Can't wait to attend this year and hopefully stay for the whole time. I might bring one of mine but depends on how prepared I am to lug them around the con. :sweat

Question. Is there any clothing seller at all in the exhibit hall or near the con?

    5. I don't know if any specific BJD clothing sellers on the floor (it's been a loooong time since I was able to see much of the exhibit floor, most of my responsibilities have me dealing with the lines out back or issues within the rooms), but Tonner is there as well as other vinyl sellers. I do know for a fact that there will be at least two seamstresses in attendance at the panel, but they aren't allowed to sell in the program room (it's not retail space). It doesn't prevent them from conducting business elsewhere.

Yes, I would recommend you bring a satchel/tote bag big enough to carry your doll around in to give your arms a break. Rolling carts/bags aren't allowed in the hall, and carrying a doll in your arms starts out cute, but quickly becomes a pain in the hiney. Even a Yo-sized doll can become a burden after an hour or two. Bring a Magic Eraser with you to take care of accidental rubs...the aisles can get very crowded. I also find that Yos and Tinys work well when you're trying to take pictures of them at booths, with costumed characters, etc....people seem fairly willing to let you plop a tiny down to take a picture.

Also, there is a lot to see outside the Center as well...the downtown area has many displays and exhibits along Fifth Avenue, towards Petco, etc. They can be great places to photograph your kids.

    6. Wish I could find a doll convention or meet up in South Florida! :pout:

    7. I went last year and it was so nice to meet everyone :-)

I'll be (once again) working as an Exhibitor for the publishing company I work for, so I'll definitely be there this year! It'll be the first chance I'll have to show off my new Luts babbi :-)

    8. I'll be in a booth in the Exhibit Hall again, and will bring a doll along for the Panel.

Very cool to have special guests this year! :D

It IS super-crowded at Comic Con, so carrying a Yo is OK, but anything much larger would be difficult. Be careful to keep you hands on everything at all times when walking in the crowds as it's easy for people to steal phones and wallets! And it's easy for people with big bags or backpacks or costumes to accidentally knock into you.

Because I'm at a booth, I can keep my doll in a carrier there, out of the way of the crowds. I'm not sure I'd want to carry it around all day, even in a carrier (I usually have larger-sized dolls).

    9. @April- Yeah, I made the mistake of bringing my MSD a few years ago and I spent the whole day I brought her worrying about her getting broken/stolen. That was the year someone in the 200s had a booth dedicated to American-made BJD, I forget what the company was called but they weren't there the next year...

This little one is waaaay too small for the carrier I own (it's for my SD sized dolls...) so I'll have to rig up something special for the occasion! :-)

    10. i'm so excited to see so many people attending this con :) i really hope i can make this meet, i would love to meet more dolly friends! I just got back into the hobby and i'm excited for this con :) i apologize in advance, i may be super shy, please don't take it the wrong way i'm just super awkward with new people ^^;;

    11. Well... people at Comic Con is just a given! That con is just TOO BIG, seriously! It's lucky to even be able to get into the con; it sells out in seconds these days! *_*

The room is usually pretty big and somewhat more impersonal than most doll meets, which is good and bad. You can just sit quietly or wander around and take photos--no social stress! But it's a little harder to meet and talk to people (not bad, but it's more like being at a panel than a regular meetup. And everyone interested can just drop in (it's listed in the convention programming).

I think most doll-owners are slightly introverted, so it's cool to be shy and awkward around new people. Just come and enjoy the dolls. That's never a bad thing! :D

    12. I'm going to be bringing 60cm delfs...
I hope they (and I) survive without any problems XD

What doll are you planning to bring april? and what exhibit if you don't mind me asking

    13. That was Goodreau Dolls when they premiered their Make It Mine (MIM) line. Unfortunately, they had to cancel for the following year because of consecutive family tragedies. I would love to see Paulette come back at some point, even if it's just to attend, she is missed.

    14. i really hope i can make this meetup, i hope that i wont have any panels i want to attend during this time @___@ usually they are sunday morning though :3

    15. Well, Dr. Who is still in filming until August, so that won't be a conflict this year. That's the panel that normally conflicts with ours.

    16. Ooo yeah i just heard about that :( im kinda sad there wont be a doctor who panel.. but i guess now it is a dolly meet :) i will still be attending supernatural panel, (if they have it.. they better have one...) and hopefully i can drop off my blankets and such and pick up my boy from the hotel to make the meet up! i dont want to risk a camp out with a doll just in case a thief in the night decides to make off with my doll :(

    17. Batman panels made me leave the doll meetup last year, hopefully not this year ;~;

    18. I don't know what doll I'm bringing. If you have any requests (most of my dolls listed in my Profile), feel free to speak up! :)

A friend and I sell our art in a booth in the Fantasy Illustrators section (listed under: April Lee/Diana Stein)--usually a few aisles over from the Artists Alley tables, between Lobbies F and G, usually booth #4821 (maybe 4721--I should really find out, right? I'm so bad at promotion!)... but we're just a little drop in the huge room--don't worry about trying to find us. ... It's a ZOO in there! :D

    19. One week away! I'll be in limited contact from today (set-up started yesterday), but I'll try to answer questions when I can. See y'all next Sunday!

    20. Your Heliot (I've always wanted to see one irl) or volks shiro (so I finally know their color). I've gone through there before, I'll keep a lookout this time. xd

    21. I will hopefully be there Sunday. I just got my first little doll so I will bring her with me :)

    22. You guuuys! I can't go to the Sunday meet. I'm only there saturday. Can anyone meet up saturday? The only con commitment I have is a panel at 11:30

    23. I am at con all days and so far have survived lugging around my SD. A tote bag really helps! I will be working till noonish at the sails pavilion tho, but I wander the exhibit hall, esp the published and comics around lobby b. Also artist alley. Xd

    24. I know I can't sell stuff in the panel room, but I'm bringing some knitted scarves and shawls/blankets with me to sell. You won't be able to miss me. I'll have a black and yellow track jacket and a tactical style backpack lol.

    25. Does anyone know what booth the Victoria Frances fairyland doll is at? Oops maybe that was 2011 o__o! I thought fairyland was here this year too..

    26. No, Fairyland wasn't there...the exhibit hall manager always asks me before he adds doll companies (this year's question was Ashton Drake).

It was a great panel, I truly appreciate everyone who came out to hear us speak. Thanks so much to our panelists Bo Bergemann, Judy Johnson, Pam Ford, Mercy Neumark, and Bruce Thomas for their contribution to a great panel.

      See y'all next year!

    27. i missed the meetup/panel ;_; i got stuck at NerdHQ tryin to get tickets to a panel (only to have it be cancelled -_-) so i missed the meet :( oh well maybe i'll try again next year /sigh

    28. It was nice to see the step by step process of making a doll by Bo Bergmann. :3

    29. Yeah--Bo Bergemann's info about resin-casting was really interesting. I wish I'd taken better notes. I hadn't heard a lot of that stuff before and she had a ton of facts.

Everybody did a great job! Thanks!!!

    30. I want to go to this next year. I want to go to the Legend of Korra panels and the doll meet. So need to win a lottery. lol

    31. April, she's already committed to next year's panel, so you should record it with your phone!

    32. I tried recording this past talk, but failed to figure my phone out!

Good to know Bo is coming back! I wonder if the BJDC will also be less than a week away next year?

I may be taking a break from Comic Con next summer. I'm not doing the booth, anyway. If I'm around I may try and just get there for the panel... (but I'm rather hoping to be on vacation!). :D

    33. Nope, BJDC is the same weekend, CCI is weeks earlier. It's July 8th :D

It will be a shame not to see you there, April.
