Comic-Con Int:San Diego 2013 BJD Meetup and Panel Sunday, July 21, 2013

Jun 14, 2013

    1. It's that time...schedules have gone out, so we're set for this year's panel/meetup at Comic-Con International in San Diego!

Comic-Con runs July 18-21, and the meetup is scheduled for Sunday, July 21 from 1pm-3pm. We have a new room this year, Room 29A, which is in the same general area as last year's room. As always, you must have a membership to the convention to attend, as the panel/meetup is in the convention center. We will have a short intro/Q&A, then the rest of the time will be spent as meetup and photo time. We generally have a large variety of BJDs displayed, so feel free to join in!

Please keep in mind that there are no sales allowed in any of the program spaces.

As always, if there are any questions, please feel free to pm me :D

    2. I'm working at the convention, but I don't know yet what my schedule will be. I hope I can make this meetup!

    3. Cool, me too. Are you a volunteer, or working with one of the vendors, or??

    4. I'm working with two different vendors, which is why I'm so unclear on my schedule. The way its looking now, one of them I will only be relieving for lunch so unless there is an awesome CAC panel I want to attend I should be able at least stop by!

    5. I'm also working at the con in the exhibit hall, but i talked to my boss and he said i could have that part of sunday off :-) I am so excited!!!! I'll (hopefully) be bringing my doll from Pennsylvania so cross your fingers.

    6. I should be able to attend. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

    7. It's never a good sign when CNN or news stations pay attention to SDCC in my experience. They are usually just after the 'freak' angle of the show, no matter how normal the actual attendees are or what they suggest you do. I am excited for this panel though :-)

    8. CNN and other nationwide news outlets do feeds from our show every year with no problems, they've been a lot more positive than they had been in the past. I don't take anything negative from that reporter's statement at all, more of a "there's something for every interest if you look hard enough", which is great, in my opinion. I think I'll crow about it to our PR guy when I go in today :D

I wish more people would seek out the smaller, more unique panels like our spotlights and more fan-run panels, rather than just focusing on the big media panels in H and 20. Perhaps then we wouldn't have a line that stretches all the way to TJ and back to get into those rooms. That would rock.

    9. I don't mean to say that this particular reporter was being rude or anything, i just mean my experience as a general term with SDCC publicity. I've seen excellent coverage from the 'geek' corner (Topless Robot), but it can go either way with big news reporting people who don't know what SDCC is all about. I've been going to SDCC for 13 years now and have loved every year, but it does gather some rather strange people together...

    10. i wish i could attend the meet but i wasn't able to snag a pair of tickets :( which is a shame because I used to go every year.
If you guys ever hold a small get together outside of the convention center, maybe like a lunch date or something, i would love to go ><
I've been dying to talk and meet with other owners.

    11. I'm going! This is my first SDCC, and also my first big doll meet. I'm really excited! I think I may have to go make some geek-wear for my doll so she can fit in a little better. :P

    12. Oh! I was wondering if there'd be a panel organized this year! Thank you, clochette!!! :D

brucedabold-- cool like! I'm thinking they just randomly picked some things out of the programming schedule--but it's still neat!

Mazokugirl451-- Comic Con is big enough that it doesn't matter if they get covered for the geek/freak factor or not, these days. The local news is used to covering it by now, and they camp it up, but it's not done in a nasty way. Early coverage of bjds were pretty dismissive and patronizing, too--but that is also getting a bit better, now that there are just so many niche interests, and so many odd little interests that have become pretty much main-stream. ... of course, I've been going to Comic Con since the '80s, so my perspective of how things have changed may be a little different! :)

      ---

As before, I'll have my shared booth in the Exhibit Hall... but my booth-mate is usually good enough to let me run off to go to the meetup, so hopefully that will work again this year!

It'll be a pain to haul around a doll, but I'll try!

    13. April- Where's your booth? I always like meeting doll people that work in the exhibit hall. You aren't the woman who had an American-based BJD double booth by the 500s a few years ago?

    14. Nope. I'm in the Fantasy Illustrators area--April Lee and Diana Stein 4821... over on the far Left as you are entering-- between Lobby areas G and E. We're both fantasy artists, sharing a booth, for our 4th or more year. I usually don't have the space to have my doll displayed. I just keep them in a carrier until the meetup...

And I will applaud you if you can make it around to anything at all! I usually only run around before the hall is opened to look at things, because it is near impossible to get anywhere once all the crowds are in! :o

But if you do come by, just tell me you're a bjd/doa person. I don't mind chatting! :)

    15. Hey, April, when are you setting up? I'll be out and about doing last minute placement checks most of Wednesday, I'll try to swing by and say hi. I have a ton of new stuff going up on the front and the H side of the building, so I should be down that way fairly frequently. I updated the Illustrator/Comic Artist area banner so that it matches all the other signage, so I'll be right in that area.

Of course there's a panel. He always schedules mine first ;)

    16. Heh. Well, it's always good to have someone on the inside to get things done! :D

I'm hoping to be set up for Preview Night (sometimes I'm not, but crossing fingers this year!). It'll be cool to see the new banner!
'Hope to see you--but knowing how crazy things can get, definitely don't worry about dropping by unless you happen to be walking down that aisle! I'll see you at the panel, I'm fairly certain! :)

    17. I usually get out a few times (i'm in the main exhibitor hall area at #1821), but i'll try to run by before or right after one of the days start and say hi :-)

    18. Ah, you're behind SLG! I travel the 1800 aisle quite frequently during show (it's the main path to the Bayside Lobby), so I'll try to stop and say hi.

April, that banner was incredibly old...it was from back in our GES days. The only other non-logo banners are the toaster (food court) and the one in your area. I'm redoing yours next year, have to figure out what to do with the text orientation since it will become a portrait "box" like the others. The toaster will be the lone vinyl survivor...it's my favorite banner, so it gets to stay <G>.

    19. Hope you guys have fun! I also wasn't able to get tickets. > - < I'm not sure how other people get them tbh lol

    20. I'll also be working the convention this year, but I can probably get those hours off, as I'd love to come to this! I came to the meet last year, but couldn't stay as long as I would have liked. Can't wait to see everyone! Now to decide who to bring. :p

    21. I've been going to SDCC for years now, but this will be my first doll meet. I still don't have my doll, please me kind! Is anyone taking an EID or SID?

    22. Is it a problem if I'm 30min-1hr late to the panel/meet? Another panel I'm going to (a cannot-miss one) is scheduled til 1:30.

    23. The panel is 2 hours, so no, we won't mark you tardy ;)

    24. It was very nice meeting you all! Thank you to the five lovely people who answered all my questions.

    25. That was a lot of fun! I was the tardy one at 1:30-1:45ish with the Bobobie Ariel (then got mistaken for a girl when I claimed my raffle prize :P). It was an excellent meet. I got to answer a lot of people's questions after the Q&A and felt rather knowledgable.

Whose was the tan IH boy (I think Tedros) in the cute black skirt?

    26. That was April's boy. April?

Thanks again to everyone who attended!

    27. Yep, I had my Iplehouse boy there--

He's an SID, Circus Noctarcana special light brown skin, with faceup... wearing a sort of Utilikilt (makers of people-sized kilts in khaki fabric with pockets and hardware that update the whole kilt thing--they had the booth behind ours in the Exhibit Hall) that I bought from an ebay seller. :D

Thanks for organizing the panel/meetup clochette! Lots of fun and very informative as always!

    28. Thanks for posting the pics (and getting so many pictures of Moira :D )

I really didn't like the projector being right in the middle like that...it seemed awkward and blocked the view of anyone behind it, even when the speaker was on stage. I'm going to let my Programming person know so that he fixes that for next year if he uses that room again.

    29. Glad I could take some Moira pics for you! ... I wish I could manage my exposure and focus better, though! :(
