The dolls that got me started collecting are shells of characters who are very important to me, so I'm unlikely to ever pass them on. The others... well, I'm still enjoying them! I have all my dolls displayed in a very visible place, so I can easily look over at them and go "hehehe".

I wouldn't mind adding more to my collection, and there are a handful of sculpts I have an eye on, but I am very literally out of space to display any more dolls. And what's the point of owning a doll if I can't look over at them and go "hehehe"?!

I did, actually! A couple of years ago my partner and I basically sold our entire collection except for a few very nostalgic dolls because we didn't feel very connected to them and really needed the money at the time for other things (we had just bought a house, so.. expenses!). We thought we were leaving the doll hobby for good and weren't interested in them anymore.

After a couple of years, we ended up realizing that we still love dolls, we just don't have the desire or the space or the money to deal with (clothe, manhandle, photograph) SD+ dolls anymore - and that was almost all of our collection previously - and we didn't want to have too many of them. We've always been totally in love with Minifees, so we decided to each just have a couple of Minifees to focus on and not collect too many dolls again. So far, so good!

We each have four dolls right now and I think it's going to stay around that number - we're sort of eyeing getting a fifth each at some unspecified point in the future, but I'm pretty happy to just spoil my current dolls silly. I am never gonna have 10+ dolls that just belong to me in this house ever again, I can't handle it

Gender breakdown:
Of those dolls/heads, they all kept the genders/sex as marketed, except for:
- 1 is a male head sculpt that I genderswapped and put on a female body.
- 1 is a male head sculpt with a male body, that will eventually be modded into neuter because the character is genderless.
- 1 was marketed as androgynous (can be either male or female), and I put it on a female body.

Other fun facts.

• Dollstown and Volks are the most represented - 1 full & 1 hybrid for each company. All other companies are represented once, as full doll or hybrid head/body.
• I've owned the most dolls from Volks - 3 dolls, although I only have one now (plus a body hybrid).
• I also have a LUTS event head. I don't really count it in my doll tally, since I only use it for faceup practice and it's never going to be part of the collection.
• My doll-buying rate is consistently around 3 dolls/year. I'm hoping to get this down to <1 doll/year...
• For a very long time I fluctuated between owning 3 and 4 dolls. I broke this record in 2023 by ending the year with 6 dolls, and the collection has grown.

- I am super attached to my SDs, but I don't do a lot with them since they're slightly larger than I'm comfortable with handling.
- MSDs are juuust within budget enough to sometimes impulse buy them secondhand, which is what has led to the high turnover. They're such a convenient size!
- YoSDs are my least favorite size, but I've never sold one. If I like them enough to get that size, then I like them enough that they're probably here for good!
- The two tinies I've sold were childlike ones and the three remaining are mature tinies. I do want one of the sold tinies back (PukiPuki Piki), but I generally prefer off topic, non-resin dolls for 1/8 and 1/12 scale.

I thought I wanted a bunch of different scales and really stylised dolls, but it turns out I'm mostly into mature ¼ dolls and ones that scale well next to them. (The reason for the + is that one of the ones i think of as ⅓ was a 70cm RS boy, and one of the ones i don't really think of as ¼ was a Souldoll Vito girl, but it's close.) The ⅙ is a mature ⅙ that i really want to love but never connected with; the two ⅛ are a mature one i expected to love and didn't, and a pukifee i didn't expect to love but did.

This has been enlightening, i didn't realise I'd had so many before!

 

I've sold a lot of dolls over the years and haven't kept any kind of records for them, so I'm not going to try to count those guys... (There would probably be something on the order of 50 at this point, between full dolls, spare bods and floating heads-).

I'm also not going to count the occupants of the Head Box, who are mostly here for completeness' sake and so will never have bodies of their own or any of that. Likewise, I'm not counting the Menagerie creatures, who aren't all On Topic for DoA.

This list is just the main part of the crew, divided by company and size, with genders listed. (Note: Gender here is character-based rather than strictly the body type used for the doll. Some of the non-male/female characters are on male bodies, some on female, some have modifications others don't. One... a very protean shape-shifting werewolf character... actually has two bodies that I switch the head between depending on mood. Funny details:

• My first doll was a Volks MSD Kohaku when they still sold them as loose box kits in 2006. No doll I've owned since has ever matched him in ability to hold poses and overall STABILITY, he was a TANK of a doll! I sold him on here, I hope wherever he is now, he's still a rock!
• I bought a Musedoll Ciel as my 2nd doll ever, sold her, then bought another 12 years later because I missed her.
• I also owned 2 DIM Persias, because their resin color kept changing and I kept trying to match the head to a body! In the end I dyed him, then gifted him to a friend who fell in love with him. I wish I had one still, especially because the original mold has been lost and there will never be more Persias.
• I went through a period where all but one of my dolls were boys... and now I have all girls and no intention of adding a boy to the collection (aside from a lingering floating head I'm trying to sell!)
• In the early days of "Chinese dolls are all cheap, poor quality or recasts", my oldest doll is my B&G Eleanor. She's just charming in a way I can't really explain.
