I wasn't sure where to post this so I decided to post it here. I heard paypal is changing pay in 4 and wanted to hear more on it. I did have two articles I opened to read, but I lost the articles. What changes are they making to the pay in 4? Any horror stories about paypal? I've heard some bad things like money being held hostage. I never really thought about paypal because I rarely shopped online before BTS and bjds. It was always just the necessities like school supplies and ocassionally something nice once in awhile.
My money has never been held hostage I think due to the fact that my account is extremely old by now and Ive used it without problems all this time. But for someone with a newer account trying to sell I've seen them not release the received funds until after you can provide a shipping label (and it was several times in a row)... Something to be prepared for perhaps. In a bad enough situation that would be a problem, if you needed the money you received to pay for shipping at all.
I hate PayPal. it's one of those things I put up with because there's no other options in the Doll Community especially since it's worshiped on DoA as the only safe way to buy. I only use it for personal sales, I'm not a business or anything but it gives me nothing but headaches. PayPal is serious legal trouble in Sweden where I now live, and considered a scam by the general population here because they don't let you transfer money out of PayPal to our main banks. It's been fixed for a couple banks(like 3 of 15) but some banks you still can't get your money out. You have to spend it through using a site that takes PayPal, which here are not many. They've also been in trouble lately for holding peoples payments from their accounts until they ship the goods sold which clashes with the laws here. While is great for potential buyers, and was primarily implemented for ebay, it screws the sellers immensely. I had this happen with my last sale and had to pay for shipping out of pocket because PayPal wouldn't release the money until the buyer received the item. Problem is this opens up for fraud against the seller, if the buyer receives the item then makes a complaint to PayPal it wasn't as expected, or if the mail LOSES it, the seller does not receive their money OR their item back. PayPal has a reputation for closing people accounts without warning or reasoning given, then if they deem it a mistake, it cannot be reversed. I had an account closed, 'by mistake' they said, without any warning or real reasoning ever given. After contacting them I was forced to open a new one losing my history and thus flagging my account as 'new seller' meaning my money gets held if I sell too many things in a 90 day period now. Lastly PayPal charges exorberient fees for currency exchange and no longer offers the option to all buyer to send in the currency they pay from. My last two sales I lost 10 dollars to PayPal currency fees because they forced my buyer to pay me in my local currency instead of theirs, then charged me for this service deducting it from my total received. This isn't including the PR trouble a week ago over 'mistaken' new terms that included penalizing customers who said things they disagree with online by taking their funds and closing their account. (If you use their service you agree to this risk) Which has since been reversed but honestly only because they got called out on it and people started boycotting them. The fact that it was gonna be allowed at all was a huge red flag. All in all I think I'd rather just not sell or buy anything used going forward if people ask for PayPal because while they used to be golden standard, the company feels very sketchy to me lately. Like 10 years ago when I started in the hobby PayPal was a god send, but now it's just a nightmare.
I can't find anything on them changing pay in 4. I use it quite a lot because it pays the seller in full while allowing me to split up a larger purchase. I haven't had any issues with PayPal myself. I've actually had more trouble as a seller than as a buyer on eBay. (I'll likely never use it again.)
Paypal holding money hostage is a problem a seller might encounter, but not a buyer. For buyers, Paypal is generally a good service. For sellers, it depends on where you are, what/ how much you're selling, the account type you have, and if you've verified your account in order to have it connected to your bank so you can transfer funds. I've used it for years and have never had any problems really, except it took a while to confirm my name change when I got married. I do know that for sellers, being very specific on invoices and indicating if an item needs to be shipped or is a digital/ in person sale is important (this has come up in artists' circles before, because people were issuing chargebacks for digital commissions they received and Paypal usually rules in favor of a buyer). I haven't heard anything about changes in the pay in 4, but I also don't use it, since it's similar to taking out a loan backed by Paypal, so it will show on your credit score if you're in the US (I'm not sure how credit scores work in other places, but here anything that can be a line of credit affects your score).
I haven’t heard anything about changes to PayPal pay in 4. I really hope there isn’t any changes so hopefully those are just rumors. I use it all the time I love it. I’ve also had my PayPal account for many years probably 10 years or more. I’ve never had any problems with it like negative balance or problems transactions so maybe it’s more towards newer accounts
I have not had issues with PayPal as an eBay seller (outside of the ridiculous fees and the way they calculate shipping…) but I’m in the US. People like PayPal because it’s user friendly and comes with policy protections in case something goes wrong. What people don’t know is that (in the US at least, I’ve never had to do this with a foreign bank) if you have a credit card your bank should have similar policies that allow you to get a chargeback if you call them and offer sufficient proof that the seller did something wrong.
Hahaha guess what? I once spent days arguing with PayPal as a buyer because they held my payment to Volks USA. The sculpt name Saki tripped their antiterrorism filter, which was an infuriatingly surreal conversation to have. Idk about pay in 4, but always expect that PayPal can be dodgy and be prepared to crawl up their butts about it if it happens.
That's crazy!! I know credit cards and banks will sometimes freeze funds if they think the purchase is outside of normal use and therefore fraudulent, but I'd never heard of people running into that issue with Paypal!
They didn’t bother before then, but had just been sued by the federal government for not having protections in place. It took forever for them to get a human to review the case and confirm that Volks was not actually evil.
I live in Australia and as a seller, my funds have always been held hostage by PayPal. However, I'm a private seller not a business, the only time I sell through eBay/PayPal is for accessing the international market (especially the United States), and the international market is only worth it for big-ticket, expensive, and niche hobby items like BJDs. Since I receive a lot of money per sale as a result of these big-ticket sales, I'm not surprised that PayPal freezes it until the buyer receives their items. I recently sold a BJD to a buyer in the USA. I didn't get the funds until I submitted a tracking number to PayPal and the shipment was marked as "Delivered" - after which the money was released quickly. It meant I waited about 2 weeks for over USD$250 to come in, that's how long it took to send the doll to the USA. I'm not in dire need of the funds, but it is annoying and causes subconscious anxiety. I kinda agree with this. I don't have horror stories, but I'm not fond of PayPal in general, it isn't great for international sellers. I'd really like to have alternate methods for receiving/sending money overseas, but so far the options are thin on the ground, so I've resigned myself to still using it, especially for accessing buyers/sellers in United States.
