Hi all!! Well i finally get to start! But first i want to post a sketch and make sure everything's in order. ya kno, anatomy and such. o_O I really dont wanna start carvin styrafoam and mess it up cause the sketch was wrong. =/ Yes i did draw this @_@ I'm just looking for any problems in my sketch, anatomy wise and anything else. right now the total lench of the doll by the sketch is 41 CM. EDIT: ^^ New sketch. I also posted a site with more pictures, showing detail and stuff. http://www.freewebs.com/thababah/BJDprogress.html Thanks for any help!!! Edit: Changed the title to project 001, cause I've decided when she's done Im going to tattoo a 001 on one of her ankles To show she's my first girl and stuff
You may want to look for an anatomy book at the library (looking for it on the internet gets icky fast ops: ) an artists anatomy book too perhaps (athough artist anatomy books tend to be less accurate, even more so for children size) Any way, to me the torso looks a bit shallow, the head is a little large and the upper arms are a little thick, other than that it looks like you are in good shape! I like the nose! It looks like you have the joints figured out very well! I hope it goes well! keep it up! Let me know if you need help!
 So you wont have to look around, this is a good on-line site for artists anatomy comparison. WARNING: the site has images of real, nude people. The link is to the female comparison page, they have sevral body types broken down with proportion marks. In otehr parts of the site they have a male comparision and general reference images. Some of the reference images are sligthly more graphic, but the comparison charts are just straight on and side views so even though they are nude, it is very mild in nature. Its very helpful because they have sevral diffrent people in the chart, with various builds. Any way after through warning and explination here is the link: http://www.female-anatomy-for-artist.com/content/comparison/comparison.htm
an anatomy book might be helpful, orlooking at a real person while drawing it, or other classical paintings, etc - I have no problems with anatomy books but when I open it to a body dissection it makes me queasy - remembering the hours last year in the dissection room for human bio and the smell of formalin and all the bodies >_<. Looking at naked people doesn't worry me, but dead, preserved bodies do! Looking at other doll sculpts might be even more helpful, because they have already worked out all the tricks to creating realism in a limited, poseable format. Even if you're not going for realism, certain things will impede the structure - such as extremely small knee joints. The knee needs to be nice and stable to support the body. The same with the ankles.
ops: I just noticed...the eyes are a bit too close, Iam not sure they would fit inside. Normal space (on people) is about one eye width between eyes.
*holds up her anatomy book* I rarely use this thing. <_< *pokes it* : );; Thanks for the link! I'll go to it when my sister leaves o__o;;;. I'm gunna go get the sketch and some new paper and work on it alot. o_O thanks for the help! EDIT: OKAY! ^_^ Drew a wholee new design, thank you so much for that link!! O_O i actually drew a female from the side! omg! XD;; (huggee joke with some of my friends at school) and i think I fixxed the head problem.. I'm trying to find a ruler so i can work on the eyes and arms, thanks again!! Edit 2: XD;; okay! new sketch posted. along with a link of other sketches.
As for anatomy.. In my personal opinion, the only thing that seems off is the shape in the legs ( a little too curvy) and the length of the arms. The torso might be a little small, though, so if you make that a bit longer, it'll even out the arms. ; I hope I'm making sense here. Also, you might want to broaden the shoulders a bit. XD;; That's all though, really. Then again, this might just fit the style you're going for. In terms of something more realistic, then..yeah. XD;
it looks much better! but yes, the calves should possibly be a bit less bowed... I know that's probably the style you're going for, but it will make standing up more difficult.
*salutes everyone* thankies. ^_^;; changed the legs, and started carving will post more pics soon. ^_^ thankies!!
I kinda liked the original. ops: It's stylized and I like the more anime type body figure. I don't know if it will work or not for a three dimensional object, but it looks good to me.
hm. normally i think having correct anatomy in drawings and art is good, but stylistically, i don't think the proportions need to be spot on for the doll to look good. i mean, lots of people love Nono but her head is HUGE by any standards. Though, it's always good to know the anatomy so that if you do decide to distort it a bit for artistic lisence, you'll have a solid base to start from.
It is quite proportionately akward, but the origional sketch would make an interesting, big-headed, cartoony doll.
Okay. @_@; sorry its taken so long to post.. DX I killed the body so I have to re-carve a new one.. and the heads turning out REALLY hard... Its eithier too big or too small! Gunna work on it somemore tomorrow.. Should I just leave the head big? I'll post pics soon. ^^ Sorryy
XD okay! I promise pictures in the next day or two. o__O I kinda cant find my camera. *snort* XD I have a question, On Noahs doll tutorial it says I need Stoneclay at one point? Where do I get that? What is it excately? Is it Expensive? o__O
Its clay made of ground stone. Its about $15.00 a pound, and you can get it at just about any craft store or online. You want to make sure to get an airdry clay, and it'll most likely be grey.
one thing i've noticed, the way you've chosen to make the shoulders look nice, but movement will be restricted by the sides of the body i think... this is why BJDs shoulders aren't as cute as your drawing i think....
Yes ^^;I realized that when I put all my peices together, I fixed that on the sketch and model... Mmkay! thank you! EDIT: Bwhaha! found mah camera! >:3 My floor sunday . XDD I just thought it was funny =) The neck has been cut out. =) taken like, 20 minutes ago, then I decided to cut out the neck. o__ o Sorry about the image size? DX Photobucket keeps on uploading it HUGE with its only like 300x455?
I double checked the price on stone clay and its about $15.00 for FIVE pounds, not $12.00 per pound. It looks like you had fun making that mess of green X D
ohh! good. @_@ I'm tight on money.. Micheals will have it, right? Hah! My cats had more fun in it. They were not fun to clean off... haha. XD
okay hey everyone, big update.. I might not be able to work on her for a few more weeks. My dad was supposed to be giving me sawdust(Making it for me. XD ) and.. He fell off a latter at work. Sooo He's temoriarily immoblie. So, for the time being, I just have to save my money and go find claystone and a way to make some eyes XD; so, if anyone has a way a 14 YEAR OLD can make some sawdust without the use of some type of saw.... please tell me. XD I'll update soon hopefully =( Sorry U_U
You don't really NEED the sawdust. You can do that part with just plain clay. OR you can get permission to put some rough sawdust (that you can buy at a store) in the blender or a food processor. But GET PERMISSION first, because it might harm the blades
OHNOESMYPOSTS GOT DELETED D: Anyways. So, the clay is on(pic's below) and some of the nicks and cracks have been sanded out. I discovered my dolls head would be weird the way I carved it, so I'm carving a new one.. ^^; but so far she's coming along great! Me and Holl are brainstorming names, we'll decide on one once i get the head done ops: Pictures~
haha XDD I'll have a few new ones soon. oh! Should I cut apart the legs and arms before i do the rub down with stoneclay? also, should I sculpt the details(in the face and torso) with paperclay, orrr stoneclay? o__o I have a design for any outfit I'll be making her once her body's done >:3you cant see that though. XD
Well, if you're following the Noah's doll tutorial, you do ALL of the sculpting before cutting. The features should definately be done with stoneclay. If you try to do them with paperclay, then put stoneclay over them you'll end up with a mask of clay.
Hi Ya'll.... Horrible news. I've had to retire her due to lack of time... I may pick her back up adn continue sometime in the future, but currently I really need to work on my Art, Writing, and school work. I'm sorry.
