Hey makers, I just posted this on Castaways, too, but I thought you guys might also have a word or two to add. I wanted to pick your brains for a minute. I'm currently trying to make watertight ceramic travel containers, and I think I would need a clamping device with a silicone or rubber ring somewhere in there. I haven't had any luck finding these rings, so I thought it might be beneficial to cast them... But alas, I also cannot find any info for casting silicone or rubber. (Lots of articles about making silicone molds... but not about making silicone objects.) I generally know how to go about casting hard plastics (like resin), but I also know that making soft plastics is a bit different. Does anyone have any ideas, know of any websites, or have any information about this? Thanks, Ched
Hi, is this helpful? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aLsuK1aVo8 This site also has lots of tutorials on how to use their products. http://www.alumilite.com Hope I could help. ^^
One of the properties of Silicone Rubber is that it sticks to itself. That means that you can probably use just about any other material to make a mold. Another thing about Silicone Rubber is that the element Sulfur inhibits its curing. So stay away from making a Sulfur mold, or a mold made with materials that contain sulfur. If you make a Silicone Rubber mold to cast Silicone Rubber parts, remember to use a parting agent. If the gasket is flat, the mold you make will not have to be very complicated, and can probably be made using rigid molding materials? Consider designing the gasket with a wee bit of draft. Hopefully helpful? (^_^)
