Casting Cast resin HELP

Jun 7, 2007

    1. Hello!
      I use paper clay to make my doll. Now as I understand I must sand the figure and CAST IN RESIN. But I just dont understand what do I have to do. English isn`t my moter language and the dictionary gives me a strange word for resin. Could someone please tell me exactly what do I have to do now when I have finished the sculpting part.
      As I understand I must use sandpaper to make it really smooth but it`s nearly impossible. Then what? What should I do next ?
      (I`ve read all the topics about making a doll but I just do not understand )

      What`s resin ? Where to get it ?*_*

    2. What's your native language? Certain languages have large forums that people can pbb point you towards which may provide you with more help.

      As for casting in resin, and sanding, and so on...it's not REALLY necessary. If your doll is not meant to be handled and transported, then you can just string the parts loosely and put her on display. Paper clay can handle that. If you have to cast in resin, then yes, it's better to smooth your paperclay prototype because it's easier to sand and fill in imperfections in the paperclay than it is to do to resin.

      Resin is what we call polyurethane, which is a class of elastomer including epoxies and hard plastics and so on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyurethane

      Casting urethanes can be purchased online. Stickied posts on this subforum has links to where you buy it, how to use it, moldmaking, etc. Good luck!

      PS: I'm making a doll, too. I'm making it out of natural clay. Can I see yours? XD

    3. Also you need to use a sealer before you create a mold of your paper clay doll. I've read on other threads that spray sealers are best. Good luck!

    4. You don't have to cast your doll in resin unless you want to. Resin is what the professional BJDs are made out of.
      If you want to cast in resin, you'll need to make silicon molds of the doll pieces first...molding and casting is very expensive, so think about it before you get into all that!

    5. Yes, I could have bought many dolls for the cost of materials and tools for making resin dolls. And there's still always something else I find I'm needing. Argh.

    6. Yeah, last time I bought silicone, I thought, "Yay, now I don't have to buy anymore!" But now I'm running out again -__-;;
