Casting Cast in something besides resin?

Mar 19, 2008

    1. I'm so very sorry if this has been asked before (I didn't even know what to search for ) D:
but I've started making bjd heads and bodies and I want to cast my creations to sell/give to my friends, but Resin...scares me...ALOT.
I don't want to be anywhere near it when it's not completely cured D: so my question is, is there anything else you can case bjds in that will withstand the stringing process?
(as a bonus, that you can use a plaster mold for, cause I'm really wanting to give my doll to some friends who are interested in bjds, but not sure if it's for them so I wanted to sell them something 'cheap' or be able to just give them copies of my creations and it not make me go broke ^ ^;)

      :aheartbea

    2. I've been wondering the same thing too

but for casting i don't think plaster molds are good (plaster being chalky and all) silicone ( expensive ;^; ) works better, but i'm not speaking through my experience but rather from what i heard

    3. The only problem with this is that it would not be a TRUE Asian Ball-Jointed Doll, and would be off limits on the forum, making it hard to show off :).
You could use plastics, but again, I would just do resin, even though it is expensive!

    4. Check out this thread, where the OP casts papier-mache dolls in plaster molds: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195987

Perhaps there is something you could mix into the papier mache, such as glass-fibre strands (which are just as scary as resin, if not more), wood shavings, marble dust etc...

Not sure about the plastics that Soshi mentioned, because polyurethane resin is often referred to as 'plastics' or "working in plastics".

    5. Im so sorry about that D: I'm using my friends computer and it didnt log me out of her account.

Thank you all for the info :3 I'll give the paper mache a try :D it sounds like it's just the thing I need!:D
