Lost/Damaged Canadian Customs lost my package!

Mar 14, 2011

    1. I bought a cute YO-SD size dress off of ebay (I checked the seller's feedback very carefully), and either the tracking is not updating... or Canada Customs has lost my package. The seller sent it Xpresspost.
Typically, stuff takes two weeks to get to me, from the day after it's shipped.
It's been like this for almost two weeks now:

2011/03/02 00:31 VANCOUVER International item arrived in Canada and will be reviewed by Customs

I live pretty close to Vancouver, it usually only takes a couple days for things to ship from customs to me so, I doubt that the tracking just hasn't updated. And if I missed delivery, then I should have gotten a missed delivery slip, and you'd think that the tracking would say 'missed delivery'...

I don't know what to do. Who do I contact? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Update: My package is finally here~

Finally, my package turned up! Either it was Canada Customs being uber snail slow (especially for an xpresspost parcel), or they did something real quick when the seller looked into it. I'm so happy to have CC's fancy dress at last. I don't think I'll be ordering anything from overseas again for a while though...

Thank you everyone who helped me out, I appreciate this so much!

I'll leave this here for anyone else in a similar situation, hopefully the great advice here will help others :)

    2. Vancouver customs have been REALLY slow, so don't worry just yet. My parcel was shipped out on the 25th of February, and it remained in Customs until last Friday, when it was finally delivered (I live in Vancouver). Also, if it's something coming from abroad marked as Xpresspost, they will not necessarily update tracking - mine was never updated from "Will be reviewed by customs", but it arrived to my door.

So, yeah, don't worry just yet. =)

But if things don't get moving in about a week, you can try calling Canada Post and asking them what's what.

    3. I can tell you some things are getting stuck in customs for longer periods then normal.. you can have your seller open up a claim on the item. but usually it will take about 3o days for your seller to get a reply. it looks like Customs has it for review and this could be the holdup.. I know the holidays are over with and things are moving a bit faster but there is still alot of packages taking longer then expected to get out of customs.. My suggestion is contact your seller ask her to open a claim.. then you will just have to wait it out..

I have a feeling though your package will arrive just a bit later then expected

    4. Thank you both! Hmm... I guess I should contact the seller, maybe call the local post office to see if I missed delivery, and the slip blew away or something (we've been getting some pretty windy weather lately).

    5. I just had a very difficult time with Canada Post at Mississauga Ontario. You can read the problem in my thread "US to Canada Shipping". You should contact the seller. I am not sure if he/she is willing to file a request for you but my sender Volks USA took the trouble to do so. The parcel arrived within 5 days after the "research" was filed. The reason given was totally strange. There was NO MISTAKE in the postal code on the parcel but somehow, the wrong postal code was logged. You and I all know that even if the postal code is scanned incorrectly, finding the correct Canadian postal code given the address is as easy as ABC. Just google the address minus the postal code and the postal code for that address will show in the google search. Yet, Canada Post let the parcel sit for 3-4 weeks doing nothing. It was an EMI package. It took more than 1 month to arrive.

It is not normal for customs or Canada Post to be holding an item for so long unless customs opened it for inspection. You should do something and not sit and wait. If it's an ebay item, I believe there is a time frame (Can't remember how many days) you can wait for a package and if it does not arrive, you get your money back if you paid with payapl. After "X" number of days, you cannot get a refund. Hence, both you and the seller should try and resolve this before that "X" number of days is passed.

I have 2 homes in Canada, one in Toronto and another in Saskatoon. I never had problems with customs and Canada Post in Western Canada (Saskatoon) when the parcel comes through Vancouver. It's usually super fast. The local Post Office in Saskatoon is also friendlier than the local Post Office in downtown Toronto. You should ask the sender to file a "research" to find out what's wrong.

    6. Thank you Stargazer! That's extremely helpful advice. :) It helps to know what to ask for.
Usually I don't have a problem with Vancouver customs either, sometimes they'll sit on packages for a day or two longer than they should on EMS parcels, but I've never encountered something like this before. *_*

And minor update: Customs has had my package for two whole weeks >.<

    7. I have something (doll related but not BJD) stuck in Customs in Vancouver right now myself. It's been there since March 4th! All I can say is that if they've lost stuff, they've lost several plane/boat loads, obviously. I presume it's just wildly busy (snicker) for those poor souls at present. I'd say that if the wait gets excessive, contact the sender and have them initiate a search; I've done this in the past and it seems to light a fire under the poor overworked souls. I'm trying to sit patiently here but I'm starting to get fed up.

My very first BJD should be shipping soon, though, and I'm already starting to bite my nails down to my navel as to what Customs is going to do with it. Yikes.

    8. It's not just problems in Canada its all over Europe too.. One DoA member waited with all the rest of us in Dec jan and feb for packaged mailed in dec to arrive.. we thought it was over with now that holidays are done but no.. they now have two packages out there over a month after being mailed that have not made USA yet.. the good thing is all packages do eventually make it still filing a claim is your best bet to insure they A- look for it and know its late.. and B - in case it doesnt arrive get your money back. but so far on our other thread everyone that waited months did eventually get their packages. cept for one girl that still has a package out there that was mailed in Early dec just starting to show progress at getting close to being delivered in her tracking.

the problems are ongoing. not all but some are being held by customs or late in getting on a plane from origin of mailing country. so hang tight file a claim its about all you can do and then wait

Ebay claim filing time is up to 45 days though should be filed at least before the 45th day comes to pass

    9. Both good and sad to know I'm not alone in this. It sounds like Customs is pretty hecktick, and possibly disorganized right now. And not just in Canada. Yikes. *_*
I'm so happy that the seller has agreed to help and look into this. :)
Canada Post's own website has been absolutely useless, since the package wasn't mailed from Canada. :< Boo. The least they could do is offer advice. Everything I've learned about this, I learned from the wonderful members here on DoA. I hope this helps others as well that might be in the same situation.

Update: See first post for update~

    10. Congrats! So, the package arrives within 5 working days of the "research" by seller. I understand how you feel about not ordering from overseas for a while....me too.
