I started the sculpt for his head today. I made a really rough demon skull shape out of sculpey with tin foil inside, which I baked and yanked the tinfoil out so he's hollow. Now I am using LaDoll for the first time and I am in love. Cain is the medium sized hed. The small face is one of my book souls and the large head is a sculpture I have been working on which is paper mache (however you spell it) and paper clay. Gha true blood is on... damnit!
So I have made a lot of progress and have been going nuts because I want to post pics of what I have been able to do. The sd head now has a mouth with just the light edges of his teeth showing. The top is even now too instead of being a little off kilter. I checked the basic measurement against Dalieh and it's pretty close. Once I get ears on it should be pretty spot on actually. It is a grumpy little head. I love the nose... It's huge of course, and has an uneven knob at the top which has become more and more pronounced as I have sculpted. The brow line is lightly furrowed too... but it doesn't have any eyes. Just these two sockets glaring at me, if holes could glare. It needs eyes!!! Actually I'm going to have to figure out how to make eyes too because Cain's right eye has a scar that runs through the iris, pupil, well the whole thing which is why one of his eyes is blue. So I will try to take more pics tomorrow when I am not trying to get rid of a migraine... and I promise it will be a little smaller than the last one... I'm so sorry it came out so big
So I was able to get my husband to take a picture of what I have done with Cain's face. I know it has been a long time since I posted. I have been working and have worked myself to the stage of light terror at potentially messing it up because I am really happy with how it's coming along, LOL. Man, what do I do? I also meant to mention that this face is in the above picture... it is the medium sized face on the right... I have done a lot to it. Now I wish I hadn't use sculpey to start it but I needed a basic form that was hard. I figure you won't see the difference at all when U put on the finishing coats and smooth him out. I told you he was wicked angular and kinda effeminate though. I just hope I get that down. I have references up on my DA account if you want to see more of the character. http://myrretah.deviantart.com/
It has been forever since I posted and this update is actually way past due. I lost the proper link to get here and finally found it the other day on den of angels. I'm so glad that I have found this again because I am actually casting my head right now! What is in the (hopefully appearing) picture above is my sculpt out of ladoll and premier before I started to burnish it down, which is progress from a few months ago. The ears on him are rough in this shot, but they are now finished and I have to post good shots because I am SO proud of how they came out. The scar runs through the eye on the far side... yes I made eyeballs for him too that should also fit in a 58c and up doll. More things I need to post once I get pictures taken. Those were made out of sculpy. Right now poor Cain looks like he's been iced with this frosting. I am using a silicone molding compound which has the appearance of thick gooey frosting. I still have some fine tuning to do on the top part, the removable part, of his head that will be cast seperately. I have gotten an epoxy based resin... so it won't smell at all, and UV cut to add to it because I am casting in a very very near white ivory and have seen so many people are concerned about the resin having issues with yellowing or becoming brittle. The head will be available with or without the scar soon, and I will make it so it should fit on a couple different bodies, but I have to get together with some others who have dolls so I can fit it and seat it properly with the existing necks. The eyes will be available in a couple different colors too but I want to test them with other dolls to make sure they behave before I make them available anywhere as well. In the meantime, I am creating a sculpture around my head. What it will look like is the real face like our dolls have, but his hair will appear to be formed of bronze (I'm using bronze powder so I can shine the surface properly) and it will look like he is wearing armor up to his chin. I will post pics of that so you will be able to see what a finished head will potentially look like even in it's nontraditional surroundings . I have missed you guys so much. I really feed off of the energy of other creators and sculptors, so I can't express how thankful I was to find that link!
This is a photo I took of the sculpt I have created around the dolls face I have been making. It's nearly complete and I will start casting a production model for New York Comic Con on monday. I have had to work so fast on this. I'm just glad it's actually coming out OK, LOL. Anyway, this is only a touch off topic but I thought you would like to see this as well as the finish of it since I will be using the same techniques here that I will on the rest of the doll.
He is going to look fantastic once he's done - Are you making a body for him too, or is he going to be compatible with other doll bodies?
I hope for both. I will start on his torso after a big show I have coming up in New York. Right now his head probably won't work on other bodies because I have to channel out where the neck fits properly. That's one of the things I hope to fix after the show as well. After that I want to make a version that has the scar and one that doesn't. That way if people like Cain, they can get the scarred version which is his face... but if they just like the architecture of the face I created, they can order the unscarred version which will be a little more anonymous His body will follow as well. I hope to create something with better movement than the doll that I received from Resin Soul. I don't like how the ribcage and torso are articulated. I'll have that in mind as I sculpt. I had hoped to be able to handle a few more dolls before I worked on it, but I think I have my mind around it more without needing to see or feel how others are. Sorry, I'm thinking out loud right now. My own little way of trying to assure myself I can indeed do it.
A proper face up on the sculpt of my character's face. This was my second try. The texturing is purposeful. My character is a hardened man who has it pretty rough most of the time. I couldn't imagine him smooth. My skin isn't smooth like a lot of the doll's faces are so it struck me as necessary to create him with the light imperfections that would make him more real. I haven't finished his eyes completely yet. They will be filled with clear epoxy resin so that they have lenses and appear wet like our eyes do. That is my hope at least. I was going to buy him eyelashes but I saw this really good tutorial for them on DOA... I tried once but discovered I need stickier tape. I have cheap tape so it was a major fail!
I really need to figure out a way so my pictures don't show up so monstrously huge... sorry about that. Anybody know if I can use standard HTML in here or what? I can size it if that is the case at which point the admin will only have to deal with a short string of edits. Sorry guys.
I made him eyelashes. I can't resist taking pictures of him. Sorry this was with my phone so it's a little blurred. I love how it looks though. Kinda wistful. I am definitely going to make him a body. I think I am going to create two of them and here is why. The first body I will make around my first thought of having two balls, one in the chest area and one in the hips, which the parts of his torso will float upon. I thought this way I could achieve better movement without having the poor thing come in half when his elastics get loose or click in and out of position when I want him to look slumped. The second torso is going to have serious alteration to the shoulder blade area and exhibit the proper musculature for flight. I thought I would make it so you could use a couple different types of wings with this back and have the option of fairy, feathered, or webbed that would seat into the doll itself instead of utilizing a harness or armature that is separate from the body so it looks flighted. I know, I know, lofty goals for the newb, but after looking at some custom sculpts on Den of Angels and seeing some things here, I have really become inspired to move forward. I really think I can do it and make it something pretty, that looks like it is supposed to be that way naturally. High hopes.
This is my plan for the body. Umm... I guess you will need a color key, LOL: Green is the path of the elastics. White are the edges of the pieces as I plan to sculpt them. Soft white are areas that will be hidden by overlapping pieces. Aqua are areas that I plan to have molded around the balls I make. Red represents the movement through the torso joints. The circles will be the balls that the torso is created around which will have a hole through their center that bells out so they will allow the elastics protection without sharp edges or limit movement in any direction. So the plan is that I will build stops onto the balls inside the body that would make it so that the parts of the torso never touch or rub each other. I do need to create a back view of this too as the body fits together differently on the reverse side. I hope this gives you an idea of the movement I hope to get and a bit of an idea about how I hope to solve some of the things I have problems with on the doll I purchased... Or I will completely fall on my face and fail epically. We'll see.
So, I have a stupid question and I hope that someone reads this far down my thread and can give ma an answer... I noticed that a lot of people make their whole body and then cut it up. Has anyone done it in pieces successfully?... or is my best option really to create the entire torso as a whole and then do a hack and slash on the thing? I honestly am not sure of how to proceed to complete this in the most efficient way. It is daunting. My thought was that if I made the torso solid, I could cast it before I cut it all up in case I do anything completely loathsome to it and then I would be able to make more for me to mod until I get it right. Any advise would be appreciated at this point.
update pics So I have been tag teaming my sculpts. Cain is the closest to being completed at this point (maybe). I still need to work on the under part of his head that will lead into his neck. Today I fixed his face. It was his upper lip and teeth. I moved them forward and I think it helped his profile out some. Again with these shots I was riding the last of the good light so that I could share this update with you, so I have done a little bit more smoothing.
So this morning I put his wig on him just for ha has... and I realized that his face is done. All that's left is finishing under his chin. His mouth looks like he has fangs without showing them. His eyes look as though they are staring despite that I have no eyes in them... and to me, it looked like he was about to take a breath. Sorry for posting so close together. I really did a ton more work on his teeth and upper lip after the shots above and I was so captivated with how he turned into himself, despite the lack of body, the instant I put him down in my lap with his hair on. I wanted to share.
Thank you Ghostdollie, I have done some more work on him, just under his chin and the back of his head. All I have left is to try him on a 70cm body to make sure that his neck is made right. I'm nervous about that and I'm having trouble finding a body that won't mind standing in for a tick (I would have to borrow one from someone local just to test, but no one has the 70cm dolls around here that are male). It's actually taking some gumption not to order a body for it until I get mine going. It has taken me so long to make his head.
priming So I have the first coat of primer on the outside of him. He looks like a drow now, LOL. I am still using a pretty heavy grit sand paper just so that I can get it down in some of the higher areas and when I re-apply, it will help to fill in the lows. that line on his upper lip will soon be a memory and he will be perfect. From the front: From the sidish: Hopefully tomorrow it will not be rainy so I can add the second coat. Fingers crossed. Let the tedium continue!
The father of the Nephilim. I plan to do one of Lillith in the future. I like your conceptualization and execution
Gah, how on earth did I miss this thread? He's gorgeous! So expressive, with all the shadows on his face. He reminds me of David Bowie on the cover of his Pin-Ups album, somehow. Good luck with the second coat-- it's tedious, but I can't wait to see how he'll look when you're finished.
2nd coat Oh my thank you so much Sailor!!! Your work is so beautiful I can't express how much it means to me that you like mine You really like the shadows? That's how I have been gauging whether I have gotten him right or not. Thank you so much, bowie has such a unique beautiful face. I'm so glad that you found us here :XD Articulate I only have one good picture of the lillith from my universe drawn and it is a most unfortunate scene. She is the reason why Cain is so twisted, even though she is not the cause of the scar upon his face. That is the only scar he has allowed himself to keep, and he could heal it easily, but it is a reminder of his shame. That mark is the only tell of how broken he has become on the inside. So I have the second coat on him and I am already so pleased with how he is coming. Though the scar is less pronounced, I like that it is becoming more a part of him. It looks like semi healed flesh instead of something i carved into his face, which is what I had wanted. It was hard to make him right because of the damage to his scull. I had to compensate for how the bones would change him, the break in his nose forcing it just off center at the nob at the top, the compensation in eye shape to accommodate for how the bone reknit itself beneath. I am making him eyes too. That way I can have the one with the scar through it actually have the scar though it and have the look of a nearly blinded dead eye. He can see through it, but it is the mark of the death he carries in his blood. Sera is so much easier because I can just make sure she is even and the shadows play right on both sides. Cain, I need the subtle changes in place so he has the feel to him of what I wish. Don't even get me started on his stupid teeth. I hate vampires that have fangs on their lips. NO ONES teeth look that way. I needed him to look like he had a bit extra in his mouth without that fangy look. I think I did. it's just a bit more feral of a look, but I like it better. The hint of what's waiting should you piss him off, LOL Here are some second coat shots. I love him!
Thank you so much. It has been interesting keeping them and the scar intact without making them look different from the rest of the piece as I finish. I'm almost through sanding him so I will be off to prime him for the forth time. Now I get to start on the inside and this will be the first coat there. I know that I will end up doing tome burnishing to get all the small areas evened out properly... and none of it will be machine perfect, but I am so excited to almost have a working master. Then I get to make the resin masters and the modded faces. Since he was grey, I did a photo manip that made him look like a drow and I liked it a bit... so I think I will have one of his modded heads sport a set of elf ears instead of human. I am most looking forward to the horns though. there is a section of my story where he has horns and I am so looking forward to stretching to incorporate them into his head. They will not be the magnet on kind of horns but will start at his brows and extend up in front of where the wig seats. I haven't seen anything like that and that is how I thought they would be in the story.
fifth prime So I am continuing and he is evening out. The inside is HORRIBLE! does anyone have any tips they can give me on sealing the inside. It's just not taking as easily as the outside has especially in those hard to reach eye sockets. I really thought I got him good this last time and it still is not bonding. Now I had at one point had some eyes stuck in his head using some clean clay, and I think the ladoll absorbed some of the oils from it and that's why I now have this issue. I am afraid though, of the mold material sticking to him. I am using silicone, so I don't need any kind of a release agent so long as he is sealed properly, and I know that it works the best with the resin. I mean, should I be worried? Another thought that I had, if there were any inconsistencies with the first mold is that I can alter it lightly because I will be using it to make the masters, and not for production. Any odd things or lack of smoothness I will be able to carefully eliminate by gently taking a knife to the interior portion of the mold. The outside is what is most important to get as perfect as I'm able. He is shiny. I hate that. I'm not even using really fine sandfilm and he's shiny. I may hit him with a coat of MSC just so his surface is more of a matte finish and not.... shiny. Here he is though. Just a few more babysteps and I'm on to making his mold and mothershell. He still has a few drops of water on him in those shots. I have done more since these shots of course, so he is minus some of the little scratchy bits you can see. Still can't get over the shiny....
updates so it has been some time since I have updated here. I thought I would take a moment to let you know where I was with this and post some shots in progress. First, Cain face sculpt is completed. I got him as smooth as I was going to. This is how he looks right before I started the mold: Here I am beginning the mold in silicon rubber. You can see his mold board and the way I made registration in the top around his head and head cap. This is him with the first layer of silicon on him completely. You can see the vents for his ears in this picture. I was afraid of air entrapment at the high point of his hears. I think I remember that you can only have three or four pictures per post... not sure so I will start a new one. You can see all the gargoyles to the side of me in the shot where I'm working on him. Those are our test pieces that we have chosen to keep because we like the finish we made and we wanted the reference to recreate it. I hadn't meant to capture that, LOL. Well, Rich hadn't meant to as he was the one taking the pictures, LOL.
creating the mold So this is what the silicon looked like before I started on the mother shell. you can see that his features were so strong, that despite that he has a full1/8 to 1/4 inch of material slathered on him, you can still tell where everything is. I have the back half of his head blocked off with plastalina clay so that I can make the mother shell in two halves. It is sulfer free stuff so I don't have to worry about it having a reaction with the materials I'm using to cast or create molds. I use dark grey... so it just looks black, sorry. It's easy for me to see the silicon and forton on the surface of it so I can pick it all out and use it again but it does not like to be photographed at all! So to make the mother shell we used forton mixed with micro crystaline spheres so the mold is really light, but hard as hell with NO GIVE. I know it's pink. It's because this is the waste mold so I made it have a pink mothershell so that it would be easy to identify. Here you can see the clay side a bit better too. I put plastic wrap about the edge of the clay because picking forton out of plastalina has to be one of my least favorite things in the entire freaking world. So this is what the outer mother shell looked like right after we finished creating it. That cross makes it so, once sanded, it will seat level when we pour. The mother shell comes apart there too so we aren't creating any distortion when we pull the thing apart and don't have to force anything. We have these giant rubber bands that hold it together perfectly, and it is peppered with registration so it locks in together and is super tight. And now for another new post.... sorry. I need to update more regularly. I have been working on him and some other projects so much though that I haven't been online very much so... yeah. I have failed at updates except on my flickr and that's only because I can do that from my phone, LOL.
up to speed So this just brings you up to what I have pictures of. Here you can see the finished bottom part of the mold with my master still inside. You can see the registration along the top edge of the mold so that the interior mold seat there without shifting and without concerns of slippage or damage when I pull it apart. Here you can see the registration inside of that area where the S hook will connect him to his body. You can also see one of the vents from his ears: that darker hole to the sides of his head. Neither Rich nor myself have made an encapsulated mold like this before so I am excited to see how this thing behaves. We did build on more vents and the spouts we will pour into. I have to tell you that Rich brought me an amazing gift at work yesterday. I had left my favorite sweatshirt at his house and when he brought it... he had the finished mold in it. We had made the interior silicon but not the mothershell and he had done that for me. It is so perfect. It looks silly but it's that... well today as soon as my child goes on the bus at 8:10 in the morning... I'm driving over there and we are pouring! I'm so excited! I'll take pictures of the finished mold and post them as well as probably have video of the first pull... so if it sucks I'm going to feel like a gigantic jerk! I'm going out of my mind right now. I couldn't sleep past 5 am. Today, I will have Cain!!!! maybe I'll even have two with how fast this stuff cures so I can start on some of the variant heads. I'll give him an hour in the mold to be safe, I know it should only require half an hour but this is my first time and I want him to be perfect. Sorry for all the posts at once and sadly, I will be posting more later today with any luck, LOL.
He's gorgeous. I saw the bust version of him and thought that he was amazing, but with the primer on, you can really tell how he is going to look. I hope that the pours today go smoothly. Good luck with getting your boy!
Big Day So today I poured in my mold for the first time EVER. I didn't get pictures of the mold for you but I got one step better... video. Heres a link to the video of me doing the first part of my pour: Video of Cain! Now... I got to only make one today. It did not come out perfect. There were lots of little bubbles which I had sort of expected. On wednesday we will cast more of him and we will use the pressure pot and liberally apply the talc! I didn't use very much of that and I should have used more. The surfaces that had a reasonable amount of talc present had many less bubbles despite that I didn't use the pressure pot. Now I'm preparing you to see swiss cheese here and that really isn't that accurate either. I through some eyes in him, glib eyes are not good because the dome is so high but it was the only blue eye I had, and took some shots so some of my buddies could see how he turned out. and there you have it. That is my first casting of him. thank you so much FeyFriend for noticing him. I was really happy to find that the resin that I ordered was a perfect match to the resin soul white. I do intend to make him a body, but it is nice to have a body to work with for him until that is completed. He is two years I think... two years worth of work... I can't believe I'm about to start on the masters... and then production. I can't believe he is sitting here on my desk looking at me as I type.
Wow, I'm impressed! Such a wonderful job casting him! XD I myself am a coward, and am going to be looking for someone to pay to cast my head. XD ...I love his little teefs.
I'm trying to do a good job today I got two heads pulled with no bubbles. I'm so happy! Here's one: I love his teeth too, Iamseraplz. I wanted him to be vampy without being fangs over his lips silly. He's a subtle beast.
You have made such a wonderful and fantastic head, Myrretah. We joined The Joint at about the same time, and you are so far ahead of me. Congratulations, and Best Wishes for Success in all of your endeavors. I look forward to seeing more good works from you.
Wow! No bubbles? Good work! He looks very professional! I can't wait to see him with a faceup! And I agree, the vampire dolls with the fangs hanging over the lips always just looked silly to me. XD Like... wouldn't that hurt their lips? I much prefer the look you have going. It could even just be "angry man" if you wanted it to be.
exactly. He looks quite upset most of the time. It's not quite injured, not quite angry, not quite fear... but all of it. the first head that I pulled I did a face up on. It had a lot of bubbles which look like some kind of disease subtly on his skin. It suits the face up. Here are a couple shots so you can see how he could look... but I will make one of the perfect ones finished right as well. I'm taking the first sculpt out of each mold so, once I get my production molds done you will see the real faceups. I am really looking forward to doing the variations on him. I think it will be fun to see if I can get him to emote just a bit more than he already does. Now I wish he were a face plate though. It would be so much easier to work on his eyes... the insides I mean, LOL. now I get to make the variants and I am really excited! Umm see, bubbles. and more bubbles... and oh my! That last shot is to show just how pissed he can look. Man, I'd be worried if I hadn't made him, LOL. Thank you so much Kwmelvin! I don't feel like I'm that far ahead I'm just struggling to make what I see when I close my eyes and all the world is quiet. That face is there. I don't feel that I did more than allow him use of my hands so he could make himself. I look at it every day and wonder how I did that... how am I doing that. It's a bit hard to explain without sounding like an epic fruitcake. Cain is my first... and he usually is when I try new mediums. Sera will follow him shortly and she feels so different when I work on her. I hope you like her too. Iamseraplz I also hate vampires that have fangs that aren't their canines. I agree that the teeth on either side would look sharper or more defined and pointed, and that there is no only two puncture wounds kind of feeding... most people won't recover if my guys get you by the neck. If you are smart you'll give them your wrist or some other place where they can be more in control of the bleed rate or just come to terms with the fact that they are about to kill you. I tend to be a stickler for this whole vampire thing. There are so many fails out there I just refuse to cave. No amount of sunscreen will save you. No fairy blood or sparklies or any other silliness. It is a transferable genetic disorder... and because it alters your genetic code and structure, it is incurable. You don't have a circulatory system that works anymore... you can't have sex. You are either a monster, or afraid that you will become a monster... or you're cain, LOL.
I have updates !!!! I have five variants. four of them are close to being completed at this point. the last one, the head is nearly completed and the horns are just taking longer. I made some real progress on them today. Anyway, I wanted to post pictures so that you could compare the lot of them together. the first is a group shot. The one in the center is the original. The elf ear mod. they are in the middle of the sand and prime process before I set it up for the mold so excuse the half primed look he's sportin Tender eyes. I actually was surprised I got this to come together as well as I did. I was nervous it would look forced. Scarless. I was happy that I was able to complete hide that big scar on him, though I don't like it so this will be the only scarless version out there. I had thought to make an elfen one without the scar... but it just isn't him anymore. And finally the horned version. for this one I not only modified his forehead, but also his nose. It is bigger, if you can imagine, and it has a more feral look to it. I like the look of a greenman's nose and I wanted to elude to it here. Now what you are seeing, the ridged area on his forehead, that's actually the area where the horns seat. I didn't want floppy magnet horns, I wanted big Satyr horns that stuck right out of his face with hair cascading all about them. Finally today, I got the horns roughed so they are close to what I had in my head and I wanted to share So there you have it. Once I get them done I will make sure to let you know and post pictures of course. I hope you guys have enjoyed watching my progress. It's been so long since I started and now my work on his head is nearly complete. Now I get to start on a body, LOL.
seeing all these variations is great! And good to know one of us is getting close to completing a project haha. Mine's just dragging on...
wow, I love all of your different versions and I have to say that you are right about the scarless version. he really isn't the same any more. on the other hand, the horned version is very interesting so far. I can't wait to see it all together
I just wanted to post another quick update on the horned variant. Of course I worked on them just today so now they are even further along. I have one so it is in his head and you can see the scale of it as well as how it looks sticking out of his face. I smoothed it quite a bit. It still doesn't have the proper registration but I am already able to get it to sit there if I don't breath, well I can breath I just can't jostle him about, LOL. I am tempted to soften the ridges in his forehead. at first I thought that was a good idea but now I am half thinking that its just a lot of architecture and I should smooth it. What do you guys think now that you see a couple pictures of the horn sort in there? Am I just making more work for myself or should I smooth that area out some? Sailor keep at it! I know I have said it to you before, but your work is so inspirational to me. I hope that I have half of the success you have when I start my body. The way you tackled making him in great proportion while still having grace and simplicity is something I deeply envy. I have been thinking about it for a while, how I will manage to make a body for this face, and the qualities that I want. I have been drawing it. I almost have enough guts to start it but... I am afraid. every time I come on here I peak over at your thread.... it gives me some kind of weird moral support. I hope I can do it like you have Thank you so much Higgy. On my flickr I joked and said they looked like ghosts in that photo. When I do actually get to make a body, I will cast them each one and set them in thrones, so that they look just as they do in the group shot of them. I thought each one with a face up and all decked out in a throne that was themed specifically to that particular look would be... well, I geeked out about the idea pretty hardcore, LOL. The scarless one... well I had thought that if the scar was too strong of a feature for someone to see his face as a face they would want to make into their character, it was a good idea. I have to say though, it was one of the worst moments of my life. Smearing the Apoxy into the scar... it felt like I was killing my dog, something who trusted me and loved me and was convincing themselves that I had a reason to do it, but that they would never be the same again. I will never alter another scarred sculpt like that again. I can't do it. Hurts me too much to change them from the beasts they are. I know that now. I can add to them but I can't take away from who they are.
body shots so I have more work done... I started a body yesterday. I have been planning it for some time so.... I got pretty far for just one day . It's Cain's body. I hope that you like it. I only had him half done in the front then That's with both sides done... mostly rough... ...and that is after some sanding with one of the heads carefully balanced on top of the body so I could make sure it fit... and it fits. that is most assuredly Cain's body. I need to do some work on his neck and then widen his shoulders... but... it's him. All that pain in one place. I am making him a house... I have been worried I wouldn't get it right... but I have. That body is Cain's house.
and this is just because I can't believe that I made it.... I can't believe that I made that.... in a day.
so I have still been working. It's not much as a lot of it has involved a lot of though. I reworks his tush and back so that I am happy and have now cut him all up. I am starting the joints. I have one elbow, LOL. I desided I'm going to do his torso jointing differently than I had thought initially. I mean that the joint in his hips is going to go up into his core instead of down allowing the cor to seat in it. I know the bowl of the hips makes me thing I should do that, but I have now rejointed 5 different bodies and will be working on the 6th to fix issues with the pelvic joint and the joint through the ribcage. I don't want joints that theoretically will work. I want joints that work. We'll see. Anyway I have pictures of his epic tushy and of the smoothed out front face of his torso before I chopped him up. So there you have it. I really hope you guys like my progress even though it is very minimal here. I swear I will take this beast out and getcha some real pictures of him soon!
Oooh that back. That back is very nicely done. Love the detail of the backbone showing a little. Must say I haven't really seen in on any company doll so far and admittedly it looks quite sexy. But will cutting the body up not destroy that?
It didn't. I promise. I have to do the jont through the hips but it won't go near that part of his spine at all. It's really rather low and the core will move over the ball of the pelvis instead of resting in it like a cradle. I actually got hung up on that joint because I was so unhappy with the dolls that I handled. There was pinching and biting and gapping and I modded every single last one. I think this way I can eliminate all that and keep the lines pretty. That's the hope at least. Not destroying those lines, LOL. I have the ribcage cut and will post again once I get the pelvis done as well to show his motion. Wish me luck!!!
So I thought I would let you all know that... I made a production mold and he's up! I did it all by myself! I hope it's ok to post links and stuff. I'm so proud cause I even built the website all by myself (and am still working through some glitches) and wanted to know what people thought of him. It's just his head for now but I am very happy. My site is here: Gothic Angel bjd. I know it used to be ok to post stuff like that but I know the site has also rehomed twice now so I'm not sure. Thank you so much for all of your support. I can't wait to finish his body so that I can post the completed version in the finished works gallery!
Congrats, sincerely! Site looks great, and is a major (and enviable!) accomplishment! Will you be showing pics of your gorgeous and super-special head cap logo?! Gotta say that your sculpting work actually has an emotive and gestural "line quality" which you maintain throughout the whole process, never veering toward the generic. It's personal and it's loose and Idunnohowyadoit!!!! Go go go! (Cuddles my new Cain! OMG!)
I'm going to joint it and have both he and Ezekiel's body at Dollism in my room. they won't be finished, but I thought to bring them so that other sculptors and people who have been following my progress can see how they work in person. I still need to figure out some of the navigation issues in the site. It's very frustrating. I don't want to have to build the navigation into each page but if I can't get it all sorted the way that I want, I surely will. It is more important that it is easy to use than it is easy to make. I'm so glad that you love him Ghostdollie! there is no bigger compliment than to have something that you made go to someone who also understands the creative process and has watched from the start. I can't wait to see how your plans for him work out! I feel that it is taking so long because a good part of my time is spent thinking about how to make a good seamless look that doesn't sacrifice movement. I love anatomy! I want the bodies I make to work the way it feels when you move! It's hard! For the elbow I have found that all the twist happens in the lower arm while all the extension and retraction happens in the upper arm. The wrist has forward and backward motion with very little side to side give and no circular pivot. I have to make it so my double joints express this motion. I'm doing it, but I literally feel as though I have run a marathon after I work on it because it is so mentally taxing. My body aches because of what I am mentally attempting to achieve. I feel bad that it takes so long, but I aim to do it correctly the first time. I will make one body that I will not need to improve, only perhaps alter the physical appearance and make light joint modifications to affect the attitude and stature. That is the goal! It just takes so LOOOONNNNNNNG!
