I was given the task to build and assemble a Volks F-12 Miisha MSDG kit by my sister. I don't recall when the mold was discontinued as part of the FCS at the Volks showrooms, but I do know this kit is circa 2001, so it's a 10 year old kit, and I have heard that old Volks dolls lack posing ability and have other short comings. The FULL documentation is on my blog: HERE It's 73 pictures in length and has my commentary to go along with it. For the sake of not re-posting all those pictures again on DoA, I've just selected a few for you all to get an idea of the project. This is the 3rd MSD kit I've built from Volks, but I've never build an Old Resin model before. So here we go! Miisha's Box So here she is all laid out with the 'extra' parts. This is what her original kit would have come with. My sister bought extra eyes for me to work with since she didn't like the default ones. The extra pieces that I'll have to work with gluing are the elbow, knee and torso joints. The extra plastic tubes are for the ear channels and for one in the head cap mechanism. Here, I'm carving and sanding the seams away from her pieces so that all her parts and nice and smooth. When I was doing this, the original coloring of her resin started to show through, it was quite interesting to see the color difference. Once I sanded the area though, I had to sand the whole piece to keep the body a uniform color. The yellowing wasn't too bad, it was very subtle and for a 10 year old kit, it exceeded my expectations. Here you can see the difference between the resin aging colors along the seam after I sanded it away. I adjusted the coloring of the picture slightly so you could see it better. But considering it's on the abdomen piece, it's not too much of a bother. None of my new kits ever had to deal with this, but I had to pull out my power tools. LOL Volks didn't bother to drill the holes into the hands for me to screw the...screws into. All the newer kits have it all done for you, but this old one, I had to do it myself. The feet had holes though...I don't understand why they didn't bother with the hands.. Using pliers to secure that screw in. Does this look odd? Yes. Some of the extra parts from this kit you have to glue into place to complete the pieces. So the waist, kneecaps and elbows had to be glued in place. My blog has a full documentation of how I did it, there's just too many pictures to choose from to upload onto here. I'm just scraping away all the excess glue from the joined piece in that picture above.
I decided to un-string my newest Volks MSD kit (2011) to show you the difference 10 years makes. The older doll doesn't come with the S hook system, so it makes it difficult to change their feet and hands. There is effectively no ball joint on with the old one either. The posibility is limited with the older model, but it isn't anything that is unnatural. You can still move the feet from side to side and up and down. (Just not...360.) You can also see the feet molds are funny! The older one almost looks like it doesn't have a pinky toe. I thought it was quite amusing. Stringing up the body...~ KIPS in the Neck, Shoulder and Elbow joints~ After the stringing is done to the right tension, the doll should be able to stand...let's test her out. The kit comes with these plastic tubs called MM units. They're used for the head mechanism and for the ear channels. So in this picture I've cut out one and chopped it in half. You can see the normal sized one on the top and the two smaller ones are the half pieces. These will go into the ear channels so that wings can fit in place. Initial build complete Face up time...look at all the stuff I use.. @__@; Here's basically what I used: 1. Acrylic paints (mine are from Volks) 2. Pastels 3. Water 4. Paper towel 5. Scrap paper to test paint colors and blot excess paint. 6. Tamiya Gloss 7. Pencil Crayons (Water color pencils work too) 8. MSC or ZM Spray. 9. Assorted brushes for line work. I had to paint the wings white, so this is the also the final stage before I did the blushing and shading of them. It took a while, but I just layered some white pastel and used white acrylics to build it to the white color that you see.
Here are the wings after the blushing and coated with MSC. In progress shot of her face up Line work was hard to do..and to make it even. I just went with the flow and it ended up very anime styled..but I think my sister will be ok with it. ^__^' After I finished her face up, I put in her default eyes. They look really nice I think. The wings are looking very nice too! These are a set of acrylic eyes from Volks and a shot of her face up dead on. Oh, she looks so cute I took some test shots with a Luts wig and the new Volks eyes. Here's the final result of a couple days of work~ Thanks for looking!
Waaah! She's so cute! I love her! All her bits and pieces look so odd, but that's what 10 years of SD evolution looks like!
you did a great job!!! the face up is so nice and fit the doll very very much!!!! miisha is soooo beautiful
Love seeing Misha come to life. Wonderful face-up! Didn't know you can fit kips in elbow joint. I have to try that! I linked your thread to the Volks Msd mini discussion. This is so helpful for Msd owners. Thank you for extra comparison of old body versus new body.
This was wonderful to read! I loved all of the detail, and you did a fantastic job assembling and painting her. I hope your sister is very appreciative and happy~ ♥
Thanks I'll see if I can bring her around today la...I'm not too tired. LOL It's funny to see all the pieces right? I never bothered to document my other dolls in detail..I kind of overdid it with this doll. Thank you ♥ Thank you very much! Thank you for your kind comments ♥ Thank you! Yes, I installed KIPS in my 2008 Myu doll, since she was lacking in a lot of posing ability. Once I put them in, it made it a lot of easier. You just have to trim them a bit if you don't like that they stick out since the disc is bigger than the joint itself. Just don't snip too much off (1mm-1.5mm) or else it will get lost in the inside..^__^' (It's happened to me before.) No problem with sharing this on the Volks MSD discussion. The newer kits don't have so many things to do to assemble them compared to Miisha though Thank you! My sister has seen the initial shots I've taken as a teaser, she's quite satisfied with how she's turned out.
Where did she get that? O_o An unused Misia/Shinsia kit... *drools* Want so bad *grabby hands* Lovely job. Cute faceup! Thats very interesting about the gluing of the joints. I had no idea! I feel in love hard with this sculpt a year or two ago. Pity its sold out.
Thank you! My sister looked high and low for this one...If you look hard enough you'll find one, I'm sure I didn't know about the joints either..I actually had to open the booklet to figure it out.. Good luck with finding a girl for yourself! She is quite cute...I liked her when I first saw her, but it wasn't until I was building the sculpt that I thought she was super cute
Yes, at first I thought, Oh, another anime-esk doll. Then I started finding more owner pictures and fell head over heels. I think I start stalking Yahoo Japan and what not.
I don't think Volks did her any justice with her original promo pictures...the sculpt definitely has lots of potential Good Luck! ♥
Fantastic!! Your sister is super lucky to have found an unused discontinued doll kit. It's really interesting to see the differences between older kits and the renewal/ newer kits available now.
WOW! Normally I'm not a fan of Volks dolls, but she is adorable!! Her faceup is really excellent! Great job!!
I was crazy lucky and I know it! I recently changed the Volks acrylic eyes to animetic eyes and it completely changed Miisha's look. It actually suits Machiko's faceup work much better. I thought she looked a bit "off" before couldn't quite put my finger on what it was.
Thanks for the comments ♥ @Cloudedmind, the new kits are fun to build too, not just the old ones ^__^'
