Photography Build the Skills: a Doll Photo a Week

Jan 1, 2023

    1. Is this perhaps a touch ambitious? Do I expect to end up skipping some weeks? Probably, yeah. Life happens.

Not gonna stop me from trying.

The goal for this is to take one doll photo a week for the year of 2023. Indoor, outdoor, weekday, weekend, individual, group photo, what have you. It has to have a doll, it has to be a photo. I'm using a random word generator for ideas, though if I have something particular in mind, meh, might skip it.

What I am hoping to accomplish with this is:
      1. Get back in a regular creative habit. I sew and knit here and there, but I stopped writing last year and want to do something creative regularly in the hopes I can ease myself back in there, too.
      2. Take time and enjoy all the dolls I've got. I want to do stuff with all of them. (A couple of mine are OT, so I'll have to think about how to handle weeks where I want them to be the star of the photoshoot. Creativity, right?)
      3. Improve my photography. I took a class on it in high school, so it's been a hot second, and I want to brush up on it.
Now, I am using my phone for this. Sometimes it plays nicely, sometimes it doesn't, but I'll try. If I keep up with this long enough, I'll consider getting a better, dedicated camera.

So. Has to have a doll, has to be a photo. Simple on the surface. Let's see where it goes.

    2. Week 1 (January 1st, 2023)

We're starting out with a New Years theme, of course! I know I wanted to do that, and the random word generator got me serendipitous choices:

      • version
      • merchant
      • chance
      • brake
      • entertain
I decided to go with Version, so here's Ara considering how to be the best version of himself:

(Funnily enough, thinking of versions, I need to make a new wig for him.)

    3. Great first entry! The color of his wig with his sweater looks very nice together. I thought I'd ask first, but are you also interested in suggestions for helping to improve?

    4. Suggestions are welcome!

    5. I noticed the picture has quite a bit of noise/grain. Now, if that's what you wanted then ignore me and carry on. :) If not then it might be because you didn't have enough light.

Most phone camera's with their smaller sensors aren't great in low light settings. If there's not enough light then the phone will raise the ISO to increase light capture, but this also tends to have the added effect of increasing noise/grain in a photo. To combat this, if possible you can add additional lighting either through natural window or door light. Or artificial lighting with things like lamps. Here's a thread talking about lamps and lighting attachments people have used for photography, /threads/lamps-for-indoor-photos.841234/.

You may also look into if your phone has a manual setting that allows you to manually set things like ISO, shutter speed, and white balance.

Anyway, I look forward to see what you take next. I've never thought of using a random word generator for photo's, but that's a really cool idea, that I might have to use myself when stumped for inspiration.

    6. This looks like a great idea to improve your photography skills and learn new things. I wish you good luck on this endeavour and I'll cheer for you but don't end up pressuring yourself too much if you happen to skip some cause, as you said, life happens.
If you don't mind it, I may do it myself as well. Every year I find myself wishing I had taken more pictures and I think this is the perfect year to finally change that.

    7. His expression looks very thoughtful. I especially like how the highlighted part of the eyelashes and the shiny parts of the scar show up against the darker tones of his face. And the texture of the sweater contrasting with the smoothness of the resin is also really nice : D

For a suggestion: If you have a second lamp or light that you can move around, that lamp could be placed in front of and on the other side of the doll from wherever the first light is in the space. Having two light sources can show some contours of the doll's face and possibly add some highlights to the doll's eyes to make them really stand out.

Thanks for sharing this and hope your project is really fun : )

    8. This is a great idea! I will cheer you on!

    9. Oh, what a fun idea! I'd also love to play along, if you're alright with that. Maybe I'd get more photos taken if I had a more concrete goal then "man, I should take some nice photos of these guys sometime, huh". :XD:

    10. Heck yeah, join in! More doll pics!

    11. Good luck. I try to post a doll image to my Flickr page every day though
I don't try to capture one every day. I try to get into the studio every week
and when I do I take several image so that I can post them over a few days.

Phone cameras usually have very short focal length lenses which invite you
to get the device too close to the subject and cause distorted perspective.
Notice how much larger the near hand is than the far hand. If your phone has
a longer lens use it. Perspective is determined by the camera distance. Using
a longer focal length lens invites you to move the capture device further
from the subject so less distortion.

This image is basically a portrait so you have a bit too much negative space
at the top. Your tendency will be to center things remember your rule of thirds
from your photography class and think about putting the eyes 1/3 down from
      the top of the image...

Again, best of luck. I see this is in photography so I'll be following it.
Thanks for sharing your words. I may see what I can do with them myself. :)

    12. I don't find this thread in the photography forum.
If you can't move this thread to that forum would you please
start a new "Photo a week" thread in Photography forum??

    13. Week 2 (January 8, 2023)

Thank you all so much for the feedback! I tried to take it into account for this second photoshoot. Some equipment I didn't have on hand, such as a longer lens for my phone camera, but I grabbed a more mobile second light source (a flashlight, very different tone than my room light, I'll have to find ways to diffuse it) and tried to balance proportions in the photo more to avoid all the blank space at the top.

      The words for the week:
      • forward
      • stem
      • regulation
      • guilt
      • bar
I went with Bar, aiming for a barrier/refusal to let in. I would have done stem if I had more floral stuff! Alas. For context, my cat likes to go explore the dolls' cabinet if I have the door open, and she loves chewing on their hair, especially Nova's (the doll in the photo). I think it's because it's so light and floaty. Made for a fun challenge to get out of her face enough to get the picture without knocking her over.

I wonder if I still have the light filter sampler from a college theater class I took around somewhere...

    14. You really don't need a longer lens. You only need to move back a bit.
You may then need to crop a bit. This one looks better from a perspective
      standpoint.
I still want to do "Entertainer" from last week list but here is "Merchant"
      from last week.

    15. Nice second week! I like the prompt you went with. Nova definitely looks like they're done with that cat. lol

For things you can use for diffusion, and that you may already have on hand is a white bed sheet or thin white fabric. Hang the sheet up between your subject and the light source. The added bonus is that because sheets are fairly large especially compared to dolls it'll make your light source that much bigger, which will make the light source much softer.

    16. Week 3 (January 15, 2023)

Bit later than the Sunday ones I pulled off before, but still in for the week! The words are:
      • publisher
      • vigorous
      • enter
      • baby
      • simplicity
I decided on Baby because hey! Perfect opportunity to get a pic of my Megu! :) This week I focused more on rule of thirds and a bit of foreground/middle/background. I ended up with two pictures, not very different, but on one the line between top and middle third is around where she's holding the blanket up to her face, the other has it at her eye level. Every other setting's the same, but I personally feel more drawn to the first. Interesting how a slight change can do so much!

@TomB Your Merchant one is fun! Definitely got a contrast going between the doll and the background, but it does feel very "RPG encounter with the local shopkeep."

    17. Yes, I like that. To me the blanket in the foreground distracts a bit.
If you blur it a bit and darken it a bit is it less distracting. Yes, small
      changes can make large differences.

OK, I see that. "Barman" is somewhat similar....

    18. Week 4 (January 23, 2023)

Another Saturday pic. I had a tough time figuring out what I wanted to do for this one, and life's many shenanigans got in the way, as they are wont to do. The words are:

      • payment
      • punch
      • buttocks
      • sense
      • storm
After nearly doing storm, I went with Sense. I'm a sucker for horror, so I was thinking of all that "Do you get the feeling we're being watched...?" stuff. Though the picture's pretty bright for most horror.

@TomB Quite the busy background on that one! I know I ain't exactly a lighting expert, but I feel like some mood lighting could really kick it up a notch.

    19. Week 5 (January 29, 2023)

Got through a month of photos! Woo! Now to just do that, uh, eleven more times. :XD:

The words for this week are:
      • cage
      • crutch
      • fresh
      • loop
      • penalty
I went with Loop because mmm knitting. It was an interesting challenge trying to set Suha up like she was holding the needles and yarn, with the way her hands are designed.
