my first doll has arrived! after a short layaway (i couldn’t pay for her then and there in full so decided to put her on layaway with DDE and pay it off early seeing as there was limited stock - the sculpt is retired) and a very nail biting wait with UPS shipping, i went outside to find her waiting patiently for me!! please excuse the background getting gradually messier, i'm like a kid on christmas! i didn’t think she’d need a box so large! i must have underestimated her size. and ah i think her box got scuffed a bit;; whoops, i definitely have! i don't think I understood how big 23cm is the crown and the shell!! the shell has a very nice weight to it (and i also quite like the feel of resin!!) oh no the glue on one of the magnets has loosened is there a way i can fix that myself? it seems a bit silly to send it off to be fixed, but maybe that’s the only safe option? let me know! she is so lovely, it took a minute to get a hang of her (numerous!) legs but they seem quite tightly strung? maybe it’s intentional, i don’t know how complicated stringing a hermit crab doll would be after all! i will say though that the shell does not like staying together very much (maybe because of the magnet…) and has some gapping. also, it doesn’t sit on her body too well. but i saw someone on instagram say they would use eye putty for that, so i’ll try that. oh well! and finally, after a few very fiddly minutes i managed to get the random eyes provided into her skull! i’m not sure if they’re acrylic or resin (how do i tell?) but i like them enough for now. though they might change in the future. conclusion i'm rather happy with my first purchase, i suspect it'll take a little bit for her to truly feel like mine (and some customisation!) but that's okay! i am curious to know how tightly strung a ball jointed doll should be (as in, how much 'stretch' should be left in the elastic). i also want to know if any of you know of any ways to fix the loose magnet and maybe make the gapping in the shell parts a little less noticeable. thank you so much and this has been a wonderful way to get to know the community! i can't wait to interact more
Congrats on your doll! Doll Chateau tends to string their dolls very tightly, it's very common with them. My guess is that they do it to get the best out of their joint engineering, but you can always just restring it looser if that is what you prefer. For the magnet - you can just glue it back with super glue. Make sure you look out for the correct polarity, though (triple checking before committing to the glue is a very good idea here as a glued magnet is very hard to get out). You can tell acrylic eyes from resin from the back - acrylics are usually hollow and seem to consist of two separate plastic pieces (white for the sclera, transparent cup on the iris). Resin eyes are very clearly in one solid piece. Some companies send glass eyes, too, but I'm not sure what the common option with DC is. For anything loose, you can just use some eye putty enjoy your new doll!
thank you, i will!! ooh i wasn’t aware that was a known thing with their dolls, maybe i’ll restring her at some point (if i can work up the courage ) i’m glad to hear reattaching the magnet will be an easy fix! i definitely wouldn’t want to get the polarity wrong and gotcha, thank you! it’s definitely not acrylic then but i’m not sure if it’s resin or glass, maybe i should’ve taken a photo before inserting them to put here haha. and will do! i’m glad they sent a good amount of eye putty with the eyes then
Tip for gluing the magnet in: I put the magnet on the one it's supposed to attach to, make a dot with a marker on the face that's up, and glue the side with the dot face-down in the magnet hole. That way I have a visual clue of which side goes in the magnet hole instead of against the other magnet! But yes, you can do them yourself with super glue; just don't put the pieces back together until the glue is dry. Such a cute kiddo; congrats on your arrival!
She's so cute! Congrats on getting her! From my experience with BJD dolls from Doll Chateau's sister company Dollzone and other companies as well acrylic or glass is normally what they provide.
