USA boston-area meets

Dec 20, 2024

    1. hi everyone! i am an incurable extrovert and i was hoping to find someone already organizing meetups in the area, and so far it hasn't worked. if i'm missing something then please let me know. it sounds like con meetups are popular, and having anime boston in the area means that's probably the big get-together, but i'm avoiding cons without any covid restrictions personally.

that all in mind, is there interest in meetups in between the last and the next anime boston? while it's still cold out, any given public library will have a meeting room space they'll let us use; the bpl in particular has really nice spacious ones i've used for craft meetups before. i'm also happy to suss out a good café or similar! come the warmer weather, i'd love to do some kind of doll picnic in a park, too.

i guess just for now are there people around who'd be interested? are we open to the idea of opening up meetups to off-topic dolls as well (my bias comes from my mjd, who transports more easily than my deertaur bjd)?

i'm posting this at a weird time, given the holidays, but i figure anything put on the calendar would be in january at the earliest anyway!

i loooove love love hosting get-togethers (i've done event planning for a living) so as long as there's interest i'm happy to help coordinate!!

    2. Hello! I don’t organize meetups or anything but I wanted to let you know that I’d definitely be interested in doll meetups in the Boston area! I feel like I can’t really find any groups that do doll meetups In Boston but maybe I’m just not looking in the right places? Idk. I hope some other ppl show interest as I’d love to have some doll meetups close to me! :)

    3. Hi! I used to live in Boston, but don't anymore. I'm not sure if there are still meetups going on in the city, but I do know that there is a regularly-meeting group in Burlington MA (since I still get their e-mails). If you'd be interested in heading out there, HMU and I can share the e-mail address of the organizer.

We had some luck meeting in the some branches of the BPL, but at the time (~8 years ago?), there was a push for libraries to require meeting groups to have 503c Non-Profit status, and obviously we didn't have that, sooo...

    4. I'd love some informational also, I would like to have a regular group in the boston area to get back into the hobby with again ♡

    5. I'm a bit far from Boston, but depending on dates I might be interested in making the drive!

    6. I'm not too far from Boston, but I'm a little bit terrified of meeting new people. Ha ha.

Maybe it would be ok if I chat with someone ahead of time to have at least a buddy to go with, otherwise I'll have to bring my bf who will be like "ew dolls" the whole time (human safety blanket). RIP

Castle in Beverly could potentially be a good place to meet up as they regularly host nerdy events.

    7. i would be happy to chat with you ahead of time so you kind of know someone!!! we can trade discords or something :> i've been an emotional support extrovert before and i'll do it again. if you would feel more comfortable bringing your partner, i wouldn't particularly mind as hostess as long as he's respectful about it and will at least contain the "ew dolls" lmao.

anyway i haven't touched on this thread in a hot minute (holidays bled into other obligations), but i'm happy to hear there's interest!!! i want to try organizing something for the early spring—since no one had any thoughts/objections on that front, my instinct is to make a meetup dot com group too and open it up to dolls more generally, since i feel like mjd/blythe/monster high/etc. collectors will still have a decent overlap in interests, but i'm still open to thoughts on that.

i'm going to work on scouting out places—we'll see if the BPL or any other local libraries would be willing to host us (i live very very close to the edith m. fox library in arlington, right on the cambridge line, and they've hosted LARP and other nerdy events before so i bet they'd take us, but the BPL is probably more universally accessible so i'm gonna try to see if that push for nonprofits only went anywhere. i feel like probably not because i have a craft group that meets there regularly). my ideal is to pick a spot that doesn't require any more cost than just getting there would, and is easily accessible via public transit (especially since it's the only way i get around). i feel like places like burlington and beverly can be really difficult to get to for folks reliant on the mbta; the commuter rail goes to the latter and there's a bus that goes to parts of the former, but you know how finicky those are.

      stay tuned for updates!!!!

    8. Ha ha, he probably wouldn't say "ew" in front of everyone, but complain about it to me in private. When we first started dating he originally complained about my dolls, but now they've taken up a significant amount of our house. I have surrounded him in dolls against his will. XD

I'd be down for discord. I dunno if you have any interest in video games, but if you do we can also do that too. :>

Also in relation to opening it up to other doll enthusiasts I also collect Monster High (and RH/SH and some other stuff too).

    9. I'm interested in meeting up! I used to do the anime Boston doll meets.

    10. My friend and I who both collect are in the Boston area now and definitely miss going to meet ups. If one got organized I’d love to go so I’ll keep my eye out!

    11. If stuff is planned for actual Boston, like I could take Dartmouth coach to-from South Station on a weekend I might be interested. I am way up in WRJ VT.

    12. I am from RI depending on the dates I would be willing to take the commuter rail into the city for a meet up.
