BlueFairy Shiny Fairy/(MW) Junior body discussion part 1

Mar 22, 2010

    1. :ablink: Awh, really?! Did you do a body review somewhere? I'm interested to know the shortcomings.
Based solely on looks, I was considering trying to trade one of my old style juniors for a renewed body, but this gives me pause..:shudder

    2. Bummer :(. Anything in particular noteworthy?

I really wanted to like the old Jr body but the legs drove me nuts; I always had a hard time keeping them straight and not popping forward form the hips. I was hoping the redesigned legs and hips would be better....

    3. With how the double joints are made they snap! Into the position similar to to the single joints. I would perfer the old body because of that and the resin seemed more thicker and smooth. Though the new body is smooth but it feels super light and a bit cheap:-/

    4. i decided to order a jr. clare boy before they were discontinued, does anyone know what size eyes they take? is it 14-16mm just like the tiny fairies? they're the ones i'm used to. ^^;

and if anyone knows what ttya size fits better on junior boys? usd or msd, i'd really like to know! ^^

    5. I used mostly 12's in the two I have.

    6. @mangameow the juniors still have a yosd body, just longer limbs and proportionate hands and feet. Yosd clothes will look like your doll is outgrowing them, but they will fit. Msd clothes are definitely too big. Short sleeves and skirts and shorts for yosd are just fine on juniors! The biggest problem with juniors is that their feet are a little bigger than yosd, but not nearly as big as msd. So if you want shoes that fit, you definitely should buy them from Blue Fairy.

    7. well, shoot, i just ordered some 14mms x3;
i'll keep that in mind when for when mako opens again and i order him more permanent eyes...! hopefully he won't look really weird with 14s..!

      i see, i see!!
      i think that should work out kind of, i'm planning on having him in a sort of jumpsuit style bottom, just with the top half around his waist held up by a belt.... and now i have to buy a doll sized belt...! o_o;
i bought a jumpsuit in yosd and msd, so i'll see which suits the kind of baggy bottom style...!

i was going to buy shoes from bluefairy for him but they didn't have any styles i liked for him... :(
so i'm gonna see if my bunny nine's shoes fit him when he gets here (bunny nines are also ~35cm)...!

    8. I use 14mm eyes in my juniors and they look fine. Here are Skylar (May 1st) and Raleigh (Jaden). [IMG]

      • x 4
    9. Oh wow, Jaden is way cuter in your pic than on the BF page! And I love Skylar's freckles!

    10. ohhhh omg they're so cute!!! ♥
thanks for the pic!!! i think 14mm will end up being fine for my boy..! :3nodding:
aaahhh, this is making me want a bunch of shiny fairies, oh nooo!!! x3

    11. Question, has anyone ever used the junior tip toe feet with the shiny fairy body? Or heard of someone doing it?

    12. The Junior feet would fit physically but look very large on a Shiny. I have tried swapping their hands and feet around before but wouldn't keep a character built that way, personally. The larger / more mature sculpting of the Junior hands and feet don't suit the Shiny's relatively babyfatty body very well.

I haven't heard of anyone using this combination with heeled feet specifically. Could be interesting!

    13. I was talking about Shiny Fairy Nell over on the Tiny Fairy thread, but I thought I should post here too, in case ppl don't follow both threads...
Here's the ghost page on Blue Fairy Korea page... it says "available soon" but you can't actually find her.

    14. Lokinta- thanks! I thought I may have seen a shiny with Jr tip toe feet once before (a loooong time ago) but it's highly possible I was mistaken. Figured you guys in this thread would have a better idea.

    15. oh!!! she's looks like a sf version of somang almost?!! she's beyond adorable i'm so sad i'd never heard of her before, id totally buy her omg!!

    16. Ooh, thanks. I didn't realize I wasn't subscribed to the TinyFairy thread anymore. Must have unsubscribed when I sold my TF babe (but I still love them.. ahh..!)

Nell has such biiig eyes! And a smile which reminds me of TF Tommy. Oh, I wonder is this a new limited sculpt, or if it will be like May where there are special and normal releases.. :D

    17. Shiny Fairy Nell was available one time several years ago, and they've never brought her back. :(

    19. Yooooo Blue Fairy is having a new limited doll!! There's new Tiny Fairy Lisa and new Junior(/Shiny) Fairy Molly!!! I think she looks like Leila with lipstick, or a smaller Rachel, but she's cute!!! Blue Fairy posted her name on their Instagram this morning, but she doesn't have her own purchase page on their website yet.

The dolls (and outfit available for purchase separately!!! yeehaw!!!!) will be available starting August 29! Here's their notice.

    20. Completely missed the order for those limited adorable junior outfit :doh

    21. Me too, nemurenu! :( I forgot to take into account time zones, so when it said 5pm August 31... I didn't realize they meant Seoul. Darn!

    22. Now need more outfits for junior size... why I missed the order... how foolish!! :sigh:...(

    23. I got my March order today! What a long wait! It seems that Juniors now have a notch in their ankles and wrists? I'm sure it's for posing purposes.

    24. Oh, wow, long wait indeed! I didn't know they're so far behind. Today is business day 70 since my (July) order and am on pins and needles. Happy arrival day to you~! :cake:

What do you think of the new notches? Do they help significantly with the hands and feet? The way the hook system is designed, Bluefairy's range of motion in their hands and feet have always felt so limited. It sure would be nice to see that being remedied!

    25. Whoa!!! Sorry, oh my gosh, I meant my **JUNE** order, yikes!!! I don't know what I was thinking when I typed that. They're not that far behind, I swear!!!! :? I think I must have ordered on June 3, and BF uses the international date system of day-month-year, instead of the USA month-day-year, so I saw "03-06-2018" and thought "Really? It was March? Wow!"

Looking closely, it's just the foot/ankle that has a notch in it. I guess it's to keep the foot pointed in the direction you want it to? I can't really determine a function for it, though there must be a reason. I don't do anything wild and crazy with my dolls, so posing doesn't matter as much to me.

    26. Hi all!! I was wondering if anyone has handled both old and new shiny fairy bodies? I would love to know what you think of the newest one, since all I have is the single jointed body.
I know I read someone said they preferred the old one from their JR bodies, but I'm curious to read any other opinions too :aeyepop:

    27. I just received my new SF Jr. May last week and am so excited that I have been writing up a detailed review. :3nodding:

Overall, I really like the changes with only a couple of exceptions. Here are my top 3 points:

      • I notice inconsistent seam sanding and flaw removal throughout the body. Bluefairy has done this on two out of three Baked dolls I have purchased through them since their yearly Baked sales began. Some seams are sanded on the right but not the left, some were sanded only halfway up the seam, and then there are a few small blemishes which could have been sanded down but for whatever reason were not. It doesn’t bother me much, personally, but I know it matters to some people so I think it’s worth mentioning.

      • The lack of updates to some features which I thought Bluefairy should have prioritized was my biggest disappointment, namely the extremely limited range of motion of hands and feet. Wrists and hands remain exactly the same as they were on the old bodies, while the legs from the hips down to ankles have been entirely resculpted. The renewed body has a very nice silhouette which makes the doll look smaller and more graceful overall. ~2mm has been slimmed off the upper arm, but this change is so slight I spent most of the week questioning if I was imagining it. I do handle one of my classic Juniors very frequently, but I’m surprised I was able to notice that small of a change at a glance. When compared side-by-side it becomes apparent though that the major change that gives the slimmer appearance is mainly in the hips: the widest measurement has been reduced to 14.5cm as opposed to the classic Junior’s 16.5cm. The new hips look much better.

      • Honestly I haven’t found a good use for the shoulder mobility joints yet (perhaps they are intended for turning the arm “unnaturally but barely noticeably” through 90° so the elbow joint doesn’t show as much in photos?) but they occasionally need to be corrected. Again, not a big inconvenience, but not amazingly useful because the lack of wrist mobility foils a lot of the natural poses that could be achieved with such a feature.

I do think the renewed bodies are an improvement, both in functionality and aesthetically, and that these renewed sculpts indicate that Bluefairy is actively doing something to compete with (and in my opinion, maintaining their advantage over) other brands which have been dipping their toes into the ~35cm market. I’m very pleased with my Neo Jr. May, but am having technology woes right now (another story!) so I haven’t been able to take or share any photos of her yet. I would love to get this review video / slideshow thing made ASAP while my excitement is fresh! In the meantime, I hope this helps a bit.

    28. @Lokinta that is very helpful indeed! I'll keep an eye for those photos of your new May :D

    29. So the December order period is open... but the Shiny/Junior fairies all say "Sold out"??? Wonder what's up with that!

    30. Hi all!! I wanted to share my May look, I really like how sweet she turned out!

    31. Its been a long time, but I love being able to come in here and see all the photos :D I need to give my Jane more love. The funny thing is lately, I've been thinking I want to order a baked skin SF, not 100% sure on who, but I am thinking of a boy to go with Jane. So any and all photos are welcomed but I would love to see some boys please:)

    32. This month's special is "Jr May" and I honestly don't understand... what is the difference between the Monthly Special Junior May and just a Shiny Fairy May with a Junior girl body???

She doesn't seem to come with this outfit, either; you can buy a default Junior Fairy outfit (the school uniform), but it's extra.

Does anyone have any ideas about what this means???? April is the month when you can already buy Shiny Fairy May, so this is extra confusing.

    33. @Peppermintsheep So far the only difference I see is that Monthly Special Junior May has a "Baked" skintone option. Hmm... confusing indeed! Perhaps more details will be released subsequently.

    34. What’s also weird is that if you want the Junior Blossom body, or the Junior Boy body, you add $168 to the price.

So is it *just* Junior Girl May, and adding the Blossom or Boy body means you will literally be getting two bodies? @_@ Gosh, I wish they had explained this better! I thought I’d gotten the hang of this monthly special thing, but then this!

    35. Hello there!
I pre-ordered my special 'Jr. May' with Jr. Girl Body just few days ago. She's my first Bluefairy doll, and I feel very excited, she looks so pretty!
I also love the 33 cm size, I have a weakness for small dolls and that size seems just the perfect one!
Thank you for sharing photos of your beautiful dolls and also for the helpful comments!

    36. Hey everyone! One of the Monthly Specials For June is a Baked Choice Shiny/Junior Fairy! There’s also Baked Choice Pocket Fairies, and Blue Fairy Miley! There’s also the Friends of Blue Fairy dolls “Garnet”, who is about Junior Fairy size, and “Blanche” who is Tiny Fairy sized.

Orders will be open starting Monday June 3 and will close Friday June 7.

    37. Hi there!
My Shiny Fairy Jr. May Monthly Special arrived today and I'm in love!
The first pictures I took of her!

Blond or Brown wig? I also posted a 'Box Opening' there:
      /threads/bluefairy-shiny-fairy-jr-may-monthly-special.805489/

I think she's super cute! As soon as I make/buy few clothes for her, I will post more photos :)

    38. Oh wow, she’s super cute!!! I love the green eyes/blonde hair combination, but the green eyes/brown hair also looks lovely.... a beachy girl, or a forest girl!

    39. @Peppermintsheep
Thank you so much! The Shiny Fairy Jr. body has been a so nice surprise! This smallest size is lovely and easy to handle! And her sculpt and face-up is really super pretty :love
For the moment, she wears the brown wig, I love its 'savage' look! I will post more photos soon!

    40. Hello, everyone! :)
Does anyone know where I can find comparison pictures regarding the ShinyFairy body and the Volks YoSD body?

    41. @~A*K~ I have an older Junior boy body but hopefully it gives you a general idea of what the proportions of the Shiny Fairy might look like. (Also, I usually hybrid my Volks Lillie onto the Junior body and it works very nicely!)

Here's what Junior body vs Volks YoSD looks like:

      • x 2
    42. Thank you very much!!! If you have a "classic" shiny fairy body, I'd be interested in those pictures :)
I'm aware that they have similar measurements, but I've never seen pictures of them side by side.

    43. Unfortunately I don't have the regular Shiny Fairy but I think they would look nice together! The Junior is a bit slimmer in some ways but not unnaturally so. The really petite Yos like Fairyland Littlefees and Luts Honey Delf make Volks YoSDs look super stocky in person.

      • x 1
    44. Hmm, I ordered the “Nina” head with the Shiny Fairy body that was a special a few months ago, and I got her today! Yay, she’s very cute, but one of her hands is floppy.

Elastic is pulled tight, but it’s the hand hook dangling from the s hook. It jingles. I haven’t gotten a Shiny Fairy in a long time, so I don’t know if this is a slight defect or something. Any ideas?

    45. Compare the hook to the one one the other arm. Sometimes a bent hook won't go into the arm properly.

    46. Hey all, jumping in because I'm interested in the Shiny Fairy Junior body as a step between YOSD and MSD. Would anybody be able to show me pictures of the body (preferably the new/current version) next to... well, literally any non-BlueFairy 1/6 or 1/4 bjd? Ideally DollZone would be great since that's what I own. Current DZ 1/6 dolls push 30cm, and that might mean there isn't enough height gap between those dolls and the BlueFairy one for me. Thank you!

    47. [IMG]

Left to Right: Lati Blue Rucas (MSD - 45cm), Bluefairy Junior Leila (Junior, 35cm), Luts Cutie Delf Mary (Yo-SD, 26cm)

      Hope that helps!

      • x 1
    48. @La Sultana Thanks so much! It’s still a little hard for me to get an idea since I don’t own any Luts, but this does give a suggestion of how the body may work for me.

      • x 1
    49. Hi!
I took a comparison photo, since I have quite a few dolls between YoSD and MSD sizes now.
      ~~Doll nudity warning~~

The LittleMocha would be the closest to Dollzone’s proportions that I own (such a stringbean!), but I do know DZ has a pretty wide variety of stylized bodies, so it depends on who you have / are trying to match. At the other end of the lineup, the Kid Delf shown is on the short/slim end of MSDs.

I’d recommend the Junior Neo body over the Classic in your case, because I think the slightly more slender limb sculpting of the Neo bodies would look slightly less jarring alongside Dollzone’s skinny sculpt styles. In form and function, Junior Neo definitely holds top place as my favorite currently available body in this size range.

As you consider Juniors, though, do bear in mind that Juniors’ height is nearly all due to their long legs, so you’ll most easily notice the height difference over a 30-31cm when you look at their shoulders. Juniors’ torsos are similar in length to regular YoSD, but Juniors’ hips are rather wide - both male and female versions. Juniors’ hands and feet are definitely larger than YoSD (and the even more narrow DZ feet!) so they will not be able to share shoes or pants, and possibly other clothing as well, with your established collection.

    50. @Lokinta Thank you for such an expansive breakdown! It’s funny you also showed Bunny Bunny in there because since my last post I decided that was the most suited body. The curvy hips are more akin to DollZone. DZ’s 1/6 dolls are very curvy. However, thank you for also showing a Kid Delf, because I didn’t realise they were that “short”. Trying to find something that will sit directly inbetween DZ’s 1/6 and 1/4 sizes is quite the adventure haha. Thank you for the advice. I still haven’t made an ultimate decision, but it really is between the BF junior neo, SQ Labs, and Bunny Bunny for me. Seeing junior and Bunny Bunny next to each other like that was actually ideal, so thanks again!

Edit: in fact is there any chance you could tell me how posing compares between the junior neo and bunny bunny bodies?

    51. Hello everyone :)
I've been looking for a companion to my bunny bunny maple girl, and I think a shiny fairy with the junior body would be perfect! Though I am curious, does anyone know when baked skin for them is available?

    52. The baked resin is usually offered around late spring / early summer. Keep an eye out around the May / June / July ordering periods. The sculpts are still available on a rotating basis, so look for the late spring / early summer month that matches with your target sculpt's availability. :clover:whee:

Yes, true. They are made to mesh with the 1/6-ish range, after all. Alongside my non-slim Minis, such as Bluefairy's TinyFairy, the difference is even more drastic than the above photo. The head size, facial proportions, shoulder widths, and overall body sculpting will always break the illusion of uniformity between a shortish 1/4 scale doll and a tallish 1/6 scale doll. Keep in mind you're looking at them totally naked/blank, side by side. Strategically choosing your clothing, wigs, shoes, and standardizing eyes that you use in your collection will help minimize these differences and blend the gradient. :3nodding:

I know that somewhere I started putting a Junior Neo review and comparison together, focusing mainly on comparison between the Junior Classic and Junior Neo, with the BunnyNine and a couple others making guest appearances... I'm starting to worry it happened right around when Flickr dropped a 1,000 image limit on free users, so I'll have to try to find the raw files and put it all back together.

In short, the BunnyBunny is a lovely silhouette, with its main disappointment being the unjointed torso, which limits the posing capability of the body. I bought my BunnyBunny to shell my most athletic character, but as it turns out, BunnyBunny tends to stand straight and stiff, with a tall and prim posture. Bluefairy Juniors, especially classic version, seem to have a more casual posture. They can slouch a bit or stand tall, but still look calm and don't make for an intimidating taller character. Bluefairy dolls, including Juniors, both classic and neo, I find most frustratingly limited at the wrists. I remember the sum of my review / comparison being that although Junior Neo does not have all the improvements I think it would take to make the body "perfect," it brings some great improvements to the Junior line, and does outshine the BunnyBunny if you want versatility in posing.

I'll see if I can find that comparison / review material and re-publish it to my new Flickr account. :cheer

    53. It's time to revive this thread, hahaha.

I just wanted to mention that I just bought a Hana :D
I went for the "normal" shiny fairy body.

    54. @~A*K~ Congratulations on Hana order.

A question to those who have the Junior body girls. Do you have the heel feet for Junior? If so, can you measure the heel feet bottom from the toes to heel please?

    55. My March order (the last call for Shiny Fairies!) arrived! I ordered Blue Fairy-sized fist hands with the order (for my big Bf Miley)... and Blue Fairy sent me some Shiny Fairy-sized fist hands. Oops! They’re still useful (I use them to put arms through sleeves), but definitely not what I asked for. Thanks for looking out for me, though lol :XD:

    56. Hello!!
I know that the first Shiny Fairies had different versions over time. I'm pretty sure that the current version is 3rd and somewhere in the internet we had a comparison, but I can't find a photo/post that compares the 3 versions of Hana. Do you have any reference? Or if Hana only had 2 versions, let me know because I have the most recent one and I've found many photos of the first version, but I think I'm missing something.

      Thank you!

    57. I don't suppose anyone has Light Basic to compare to recent Fairyland resin? Just wondering if it'd still be a match, or if I need to order Basic instead for this hybrid.

    58. So, I asked BlueFairy directly and they mentioned that Hana has never been renewed, that there's only one version... but I know my Hana it's different from the ones I see of the first releases... I don't know what to think about this, hahaha.

FairyLand normal is more pink that any of the BlueFairy resin colors that I own, so I don't think it would be a good match.

    59. A renewal is a specific "reboot" of a sculpt, usually with intentionally designed differences. But other differences, unplanned and unacknowledged, can creep in over time, as a master mold is used and reused until it starts to wear out, and then when a new master mold has to be created.

      • x 1
    60. Thank you for your clarification. I don't know why I had the memory of Hana being announced as a 2nd version just like May has 3 versions. So I guess the mystery is solved. :)
