Sewing BLOOMERS! Tutorial and patterns.

Jun 9, 2012

    1. Okay! Let's sew some bloomers!
I hope these will be easy to make and my pictures speak for themselves but if you have any questions at the end feel free to ask.

      You will need:
Quarter yard or less of fabric, you can use anything that isn't too thick or stretchy.
      A willing model.
Basic sewing supplies, you can sew these by hand or machine.
Elastic (mine is 3/8in or 10mm wide, you can use smaller if you want)
First of all I'm going to go over how I made the patterns just in case someone is interested in making these in a size other than Narsha or JID/MSD.
If you have a basic pattern for pants/shorts this is how you will want to alter them to make them into bloomers:

Cut the existing pattern in four pieces like shown and draw a new one by relaying the pieces out splayed out on the bottom seam line. This gives the fabric room for the gather/bloom. You might want to expand the waist a little too if your pattern is tight fitted.

You will have to add to the top to allow for the fold down waist. It will have to be a little over twice as wide as your elastic.

Here is your pattern: This page is about 8 inches wide so if you print it out print fullsize.
The leg band is going to be a strip of fabric that measures 3cm by the circumference of your dolls thigh + a couple cm or so for seam allowance.

Cut four pieces of your main pattern (2 in reverse) and 2 of your leg band piece.
Sew two pieces together as shown, right sides together along the hip line. Repeat with the next two. I use an overlock setting on my sewing machine for these edges to make them more durable, but you don't have to just don't sew too close to the edge.
Lay out your pieces and sew a gathering stitch along the bottom of the leg as shown. You can do this by hand or turn your stitch length up to about four on your sewing machine.
Pull the threads on either end until your bottom edge is the same length as your leg band piece. Tie the ends to prevent it from loosening on you while you move the wrinkles around so they are evenly scrunched along the edge.
Fold the leg band piece lengthwise right side out then pin it to the bottom of the scrunched edge on the right side of the fabric. You will have three edges of fabric as shown below in the next post. Sew this edge (I recommend overlock especially for this edge).

Now turn the band down and sew it along the inner edge.
Here's what it looks like now.
Sew the two pieces together on one of the crotch lines. Do not sew the other yet.
Cut a piece of elastic a little longer than the top waist line. Measure your dolls waist/pants circumfrence and mark it on the elastic.
Fold the waist down over the elastic and tuck in the edge. Pin the elastic well with a few stitches on one end, you will be pulling the other end so make sure it won't fray loose.
Sew along the very inside edge. Do NOT sew through the elastic.
Pull the elastic tight to make it scrunch and pin it like you did with the other end when you get to the your mark.

    3. Once you are done with the waist you are almost done.
Sew the other crotch line as drawn.
Now match up the inner leg line as shown and sew up the V.
Turn right side out and your done!
Here is the difference between the Narsha and the JID

I hope this was clear and helpful. Please feel free to show me what you make.

    7. First, Thank you for taking the time to do this. Second, I just want to tell you what a fantastic job you have done with this tutorial. Between the pictures and well written instructions, I think even the most inexperienced sewers could follow this easily :D

    8. Even experienced sewers who have difficulty with spatial relationships can follow it! :)

    9. Thanks for sharing!!!!

    10. Hey! Really nice and cute bloomers :) maybe I should try making ones too!

    12. Good I'm glad that it's easy to follow :)

    13. I was trying to visualize on how to get my shorts patterns to splay out on the bottom to do this and you have most definitely answered that question for me-terrific! I know I probably would have come up with it myself in somebody's lifetime, but you just saved me a lot of brainwork! Thanks.

    14. pretty, definitely will try to make one ^u^ thanks for the tutorial :D

    15. These are great! Saved for future reference!

    16. I bought so much Fabric while waiting for my doll(which was a year ago) and I haven't touched them !
thinking I would make cute clothes for her :L but never did since school work and exam blocked all of my free days! >.< But with those walls down! I can finally enjoy attempting on making clothes for her! YAY!
thank you so much for posting :D <3<3<3

    17. Aaw how cute! Thanks for making this tutorial I'll be trying those bloomers!

    18. Very cool! If. you cut the bloomers with the side seams on the fold, you can also eliminate those seams

    19. Really cute! Bookmarking so I can try this when I get some fabric :)

    20. Totally gonna do a pair for my boys Halloween outfit

    21. I love this pattern! I measured the widest part of my doll's hips/thighs (11"), then enlarged the pattern piece until the waistband on it measured about 2.75" (it ended up being about 128%). Thanks so much NekoSam!

    22. You are very welcome and thanks so much for sharing you picture, those are super cute!

    23. I don't know if anyone's asked you this yet, but do you think you could make/post a YoSD size pattern? I'd love to male some bloomers for my YoSD girl!

    24. ADORABLE!! Thanks for posting this. :D

    25. Thanks for creating this tutorial, it's really illustrative! I would like to prepare some lingerie for my JID before she arrives. One more plea - can you share also the basic shorts pattern? Or just add measurements to the picture? Please :) I don't have a doll to measure yet.

    26. Any tips on making the bottom of the bloomers ruffly instead?

    27. Thin elastic? Not sure other than that.

    28. Thank you for posting this. I am definitly going to try this.

    29. Thank you so much. Your tutorail is very detailed!

    30. Does anyone have an idea on how I can mod this pattern so that the bottoms are ruffled instead of straight?

    31. What I've done with bloomers in the past is either sew on a ruffly lace for detail at the bottom or you can cut the bottoms wider than you need, then cinch it up with a running stitch for a bit of a ruffle effect. Though I do this with the bloomers on the doll so that I can make sure they'll come on and off easily

    49. Really good tutorial. It occurs to me that if you lengthen the legs and put on a snap or button cuff, you could have knickerbockers. I'm going to try both ways and see how they look. Thanks for sharing. Good job.
