Hello, I need to ask a question to all owners of bjds and hear what expert says about this . I' ve noticed some months ago, or maybe it's already from 1 year, that everytime I open the cabinet where I keep all my bjds, have a strong smell of resin. I own these bjds since 2008, and I never experienced a thing like this . I could smell some little resin odor, especially in summer, but then it was not so notable. but now it's strong . I'm concerned about these fumes, since I keep all my doll in the same room where I sleep. Everymorning, I can feel that smell, especially when I open the cabinet (I open it often since I keep there also all my books that I read everyday, so everyday I feel that smell...) Someone can tell me what is it and if is dangerous , and what are the explanations of these fumes? I need to know if in den of angel exist a discussion properly about the fumes (not the dangers of painting or use msc on resin, but I'm searching a discussion with official safety information from experts about the resin smells, and how is possible that after more than 10 years, now are starting to smell so strongly compared when were new dolls)? Thank you In advance ...
I'm going to assume you haven't acquired a new BJD recently based on your wording, but has your part of town been experiencing either a heatwave, or a rise in heat in the weather? My first theory (there's many reasons for increase in resin odor, so this might not be the exact reason, sorry D: ), resin is a form of plastic, and one of the compounds to casting BJDs reacts to heat like most other plastics. Unfortunately, it's not exactly a healthy form of smell. Though the effects of the resin smell will vary depending on your own personal immunity, and allergens. I recall that there is a thread on DoA from around 2014 to 2016 about resin fumes. What I can suggest for now is to wipe down all of your dolls with a very dry/scarcely damp cloth, and leave them in a room you don't use much, but has something like a fan pointed at them. Leave them overnight and see if the smell dissipates (this is going to be hard though without an open window but I am NOT recommending leaving a window open unattended in the middle of the night XD)
Resin never stops off-gassing, it tends to ease with age. But, if you've just went through a heatwave, it could make the resin open up and start off-gassing(smelling) again. It could be made worse with the dolls "trapped" in a cabinet. I agree with what @NosKryme said, move the dolls to an open room with a fan and let them air out. It shouldn't cause much of a health issue unless you are asthmatic or allergic, but it is a unpleasant smell to deal with everyday.
I keep my dolls sitting out in a spare bedroom with the door shut, and I definitely get that resin smell when I go in that room. Some of the dolls are new, others are over ten years old. I think the smell is partly due to them being in an enclosed space—my first doll is 14 years old and stays in a cabinet and I smell resin as soon as I open that cabinet. On the other hand, I have three newer dolls (one barely a year old) sitting in my den with much more open space and ventilation, and I don’t smell them at all.
Agreeing with others that it’s probably the enclosed space. I never smelled my dolls at all until I put them behind glass, but now I open the cabinet to fiddle around with something and get hit with a whiff of parfum de hobby. I don’t think it’s dangerous, but who knows? I find it kind of comforting because of the association with something that makes me happy.
Thanks to all for the informations. Since this morning, I placed my dolls all the day in front of the window, and I will try to see if the smell it's strong again If I close them again in the cabinet . (I think it's correct, in fact, since I keep them in the cabinet, the smell is more strong), so who knows... I wonder at this point if everyone that have dolls in a closed space like cabinet, can smell that resin odor as well? If all people that keep dolls in cabinet experience this, it's sure that it's due the close space. . Yes in my country this summer especially, had an hot season... but this smell was there even before this summer.. Anyway, I also think I will have to clean the dolls too (it's years that I don't clean them), maybe the resin smell will decrease also after a good cleaning... we will see... I like to keep them in the cabinet, but I'm afraid if these solutions will not work, I don't have other choice than close the dolls in their box and keep them in the closet in another room... and play with them only when I need it...
Mmm I keep my dolls closed in my wardrobe, inside their boxes but when I check on them there isn't any smell. On the other hand I have some figures out of their boxes but inside a cabinet and -good lord- the smell they produce! Just them thou. The other figures I own are odorless.
i've started keeping my dolls in a closed cabinet with glass doors and...yeah, yeah they started doing that too. I think since resin doesn't stop making fumes keeping them in a closed space just allows the smell to build up over time resulting in a strong smell when you go to open it. Hell i unboxed some dolls because I moved recently and just taking them out of the box they had that smell too. IDK if its bad but maybe try airing them out a bt, or keeping the door to your cabinet cracked?
Perhaps you could also try using charcoal bags and/or silica dehumidifiers in the cabinet? I can't think of a method that would stop the scent from the resin itself, but perhaps the amount of fumes that just gather and sit in the cabinet can be absorbed by charcoal/silica? Unfortunately I can't speak from experience, but I usually use these to keep clothes smelling 'fresher' in closets so I thought perhaps it could be worth a try.
I've thought about using potpourri before because yes, I have this problem too! I may use @SoapBubbles suggestion of silica packets because the smell in that glass-door cabinet is otherworldly. For context, I currently keep twelve BJDs and eight antique teddy bears in an enclosed case; the bears (many of whom are 100+ years old) have their own unique aroma that really, really does not mix well with resin! I don't really want to keep the doors open because cats, but I will likely separate the dolls from the bears to save my sniffer if I can't find a better solution. I'm going to buy some desiccant off Amazon now!
Interesting. I went and sniffed my doll vitrines, but didn't smell anything (except, in one vitrine has a scented pony, so I have apricot smell in that one). I really think it has to do something with weather conditions in each country. I live in Finland, so we don't have that many heat waves. Also my vitrine is in dark and coldest corner in my hobby room, so when we heat the house during a winter it still stays pretty cold.
I definitely think having them locked up makes the smell stronger. When my dolls are out and free I don't smell them at all. We moved recently and I had to box up all my dolls for about a month, and when I opened the boxed to get them out, every single one of them was like opening them when brand new. I am also in a humid and hot climate this time of year so that could definitely have something to do with it. My dolls are out in an open room, it is very humid and I cannot smell that smell anymore. I am sure if I enclosed them it would be strong though.
Interesting... My cabinet (with 9 BJD's) it's located in the most "dark" part of my room, where no light of sun even reach, and in the most "fresh "zone", yet, in summer my room it's very humid and hot. In winter is the contrary, my room became the most cold of all the house... I agree too , if I put them on a enclosed space, I'm afraid when open it again , there will be more smell accumulated. mm.. But even if I would leave the dolls out or in a opened space, even if the smell don't accumulated, I now knows that the resin release these fumes, so I should at least keep my window open often. But I can't do this in winter, so I think I will keep the dolls outside when it's summer so I can keep window opened almost all day, and in winter, I will keep them inside their boxes in another room . I've already placed all my dolls outside the same room where I sleep (I could not stand anymore that smell > < and I will check after some time , when I open the box if the smell its strong. Or at least, when I have to play with them and I have to take them outside the boxes, I will do this in a ventilated area , so that the accumulated fumes will go outside. Wow, today it's the first day I slept without the resin smell, and it's the first time I wake up without "that" smell... I really feel the difference!
I keep all of my dolls in their boxes for their safety. Only one of them has a strong resin stink. I've had him for a year and a half and his smell hasn't faded. When he's in his box I can't smell it anymore.
As others have already said, resin off gasses constantly to varying degrees, but heat and enclosed spaces make you more aware of the smell. Generally speaking, to keep resin in optimum conditions, you really need a total lack of UV light, constant, low level airflow, and an even temperature. This not only assists with the off gassing, but also helps slow and even out the yellowing effect somewhat, so it's a win/win for you and the dolls! For all those who keep your dolls in their boxes, please make sure to air them out at least once every couple of weeks, move the doll in the box and make sure they're not touching anything that can stain over time. A lot of beautiful dolls have been damaged by people dumping them in their boxes in the back of a wardrobe and not touching them for years, only to discover when they open them that colours have leached in, and yellowing has been uneven from an unknown heat source and no airflow. Resin is a plastic and that requires care, it's tough, but it's not indestructible and it's kryptonite is a heat/light/airflow combo.
In my decade of this hobby, all the new doll’s I’ve received smelled very faintly of resin, except my recent MYouDoll Sandra. When she arrived you could smell the resin through the shipping box! I hadn’t even opened her box and it was strong. I had to leave her in another room for a few days once I had the box open as the resin smell was so strong it made my eyes water and was giving me a headache. I couldn’t have her near until the she finished out gassing. She is fine now, with just a tiny smell like my other dolls.
I don't keep my dolls behind glass. They are sitting on an open shelf. I only notice the smell for a few days at the most after I've taken them out of the box. Most of them have lost their smell after a few hours of being out of the box. I live in a warm climate, and even in summer, I don't discern any odor. I wonder if it depends on the company of manufature? Most of my dolls came from either 5 Star Doll, Resinsoul or Bobobie. The ones from 5 Star are over 10 years old. I don't remember them having any resin smell when I got them. The others have had a faint resin smell which dissipated quickly.
I received a a new doll head recently and upon opening it, it was so... p u n g e n t . I expected a smell, since I heard from someone who got theirs before me. They mentioned that it was quite strong, but I wasn't expecting this blow to my senses. I'm not unused to new resin smells, since I have a few, but they were barely noticeable. The only one that has a comparable scent was one of the more budget-friendly ones that I no longer own. (Not knocking on the head's quality, mind! The sculpting is quite handsome!) I'm airing it out near a window (out of direct sunlight), but the smell was so strong it gave my sister a headache. Has anyone else encountered strong smelling resins from new dolls? How long did it take for the scent to dissipate?
Sometimes I still get a whiff of it when opening headcaps after a long while, so make sure you pull the headcap off and set it aside for airing too. Honestly I can't recall if it was my order of a doll + 2 more heads or my Ringdoll order, but one of mine absolutely reeked too. I kept walking in and out of the room and turned on the kitchen hoodvent as well. I also turned on my air purifier but IDK if one of those really help, I've yet to see it in action during allergy season.
I’m no chemist but I presume it’s something to do with new resin oxidizing for the first time after being cast...? I’m assuming if you were to be handed a doll right after it was cast (well, right after it was made up ready to be shipped) you probably wouldn’t get such a strong, concentrated smell. My guess is that when the new doll gets put in a box, all the off-gassing (probably not the correct use for that word) gets trapped in the box until it gets opened, like a Dutch oven If the doll is in the box for a long time (like on a slow boat from China) it’ll have had more time to build up fumes. Also, of course, not all resin is chemically the same. I’ve had some dolls where there was next to no new resin smell- actually, my newest doll had no smell whatsoever! (Or maybe I’m just used to it at this point?) I remember my first doll, Dollmore Kid Sona, definitely had a strong resin smell, but not to the degree that it irritated anyone. He actually smelled for quite a long time if I remember correctly- maybe a few months? Obviously it wasn’t strong the entire time, but I could smell it faintly when I restrung him, sueded him, etc. It also lingered in his box way longer than it did on him. If it’s really irritating you or your sister, you could possibly put in a box/bin with some baking soda. Baking soda is good for soaking up odors.
I sympathize with your sister! I have the worst time with odors of all kinds (can't deal with perfumes, colognes, deodorants, etc.). I was VERY worried about resin odors before I received my first doll, but fortunately, all of the resin I've experienced so far has had either a mild odor or has off-gassed within a reasonable amount of time (I just set the box aside immediately after opening and wait for a few days). I still smell resin when I open the drawers I keep my dolls in, but it is not overpowering. However, in order to help them continue to off-gas well, I keep charcoal satchels in the drawers. You can find them on Amazon and so forth - they are filled with a charcoal compound that sucks up odors in a way similar to baking soda. They are easier to handle than baking soda, however, and can be "recharged" by putting them in the sun for a few hours. I have found them quite successful in removing the odor of perfume or fabric softener from secondhand purchases and supplies. Whatever you do, I hope it helps quickly!
I let mine air out for a couple days and it made a huge difference. It was probably about 2 weeks since opening them and it was barely noticeable, only smelled anything up close. I do keep them out on a shelf (out of sunlight) and I don't notice any smell at all anymore, even up close (they're about 6 months old now, and I noticed no smell at all probably 3 months ago or so)
The worst and strongest smell, and probably the only one that bothered me, was from a full Luts doll I bought a few years ago. Like your sister I would get a headache and also dry throat just from handling. I left the doll out in the open in a dark corner of a guest room I almost never use and would just leave the window open whenever I could. It took about 2 months I think for it to change to tolerable. I really love the soda and charcoal suggestions though! I never tried or even thought of them but it may come in handy in the future!
I am an old-timer (within this genre of dolls and age-wise!), I have six full dolls now one that is a Volks DD hybrid. I have always suffered from strong migraines and allergies, but none o my previous full-resin BJD gave me any grief as far as them being pungent or unbearably-chemically smelling. However, my last BJD purchase that arrived to me spring of last year, gave me a terrible migraine, for the first time ever, for an ancient doll-collector like myself. I had to leave him airing out for more than two weeks, and I honestly thought I was going to have to wear a mask every time I handled him. I never had this issue before, he is from a "newer," more affordable company. However, I feel like most (if not all) the resin dolls I own are/were considered "affordable" at the time I purchased them, and I never experienced that nightmare inducing stench before. I was quite surprised just airing him did work for me, I can still smell some if the degassing fumes when I handle him, because I keep all my resin dolls inside my closet inside their boxes. But now it is a lot more subtle and I don't feel like vomiting or crying in pain when I take him out, to customize him, or attempt making clothes for him. I am also glad that I didn't have to sell him for being a stinky dude that gave me headaches. Lol! My first BJD purchase in over ten years, I probably would have sworn off purchasing more dolls of this kind then, had I not already decided that a long time before I got him. (:[\font]
I have noticed even older dolls when place in say a plastic container over a few months when opened the resin smell is strong!
I have to wonder if it varies from company to company because I have a DFH doll that still has the smell 2 months after arrival and a head that arrived more recently but has no smell whatsoever. Maybe it's also because a single head is a smaller piece of resin than a full doll...
I only notice the resin smell for a few minutes after I unbox a doll. I've never gotten a doll with a really strong smell. Just lucky I guess.
I've only had one arrive with a strong odor, my DF-H 65cm boys body. Funnily enough his DF-H head never smelled at all even after being kept in a box for roughly a year and a half. But the smell wasn't too bad and after about a week or so it either faded or I just stopped noticing it. I keep my dolls out in the open where I can see them all the time, "Janus's head probably being the one and only exception. I'm not sure why he was never displayed I mean my OT Obitsue Marie was proudly displayed for a few years while she was just a body while I took my sweet time finding her a head.
My Universe doll had such a strong odour when I opened the box. The smell was absolutely nauseating. I took him out and admired him briefly but had to quickly return him to his box because the smell was really getting to me.
Yes, my first doll (a boy) smellled very bad. I know I'm very sensible to any kind of scent, but his was so stong that even my family was bothered by it. It dissipated for about a month, after airing him as much as possible.
I have found this to be very true as well. The only time I have noticed a strong resin smell was on a doll that was several years old and purchased second hand. The smell did not bother me or anything, it was just an interesting observation as I had never noticed it on my new dolls before.
This is so funny as someone who's only had vinyl dolls and is interested in getting a resin or two in the future, because people complain about the new vinyl smell. Now I want statistics on what the number one stinkiest new doll smell is. Haha!
I keep the majority of my dolls confined to one bedroom for display. My husband says the whole room smells like resin. It kind of does, and I really like it. It's a sort of comforting, familiar scent for me. Now...the secondhand ones who come in smelling like cigarettes, cats or other questionable things....that's where I have my problems. I've had a doll arrive before who smelled so bad, she gave me a migraine within minutes of opening her, then I had to leave her in the garage for a week, and then completely take her apart, scrub her and get her all new string. Those are the ones that really bother me.
I don't remember what doll it was, but one of them was extremely strong smelling. I love the new resin smell, but it was overpowering to the point of being unpleasant, I was getting a headache from it. I took the doll and stuff out of the box then closed it back tightly, I took the doll to the sink and washed it down thoroughly. I remember I could still smell it for a couple days after scrubbing the doll, because the scent had worked it's way through the house, mostly in my room where I had originally opened the box. Washing it did take most of the smell off the doll.
Have done some resin casting before. Resin does put off fumes while it is being cast and they can continue being produced for some time after. This is part of the chemical process of casting resin. The fumes can make you sick for real, it's not just a smell sensitivity. It doesn't have much to do with the quality of the resin either. The stronger smelling dolls or at least their bodies were probably packaged up fairly soon after finishing. The fumes can be absorbed by the porous plastic packaging material and all those vapors takes longer to escape from a closed box and/or bubble mummy than if it were left out in a ventilated space. If you get a smelly doll, keep it in a space with good ventilation, if possible away from people and pets. And throw out any of the replaceable packaging like bubble wraps and bags (I know many of us keep packaging around for moving and the possibility of reselling if we don't bond, whatever packaging you keep, air it out too!). The smell will go away with some time but don't keep it in a room with closed air circulation like a bedroom. If it has to be in a bedroom at least open your windows and blow fans to circulate air better, you don't want to continue inhaling these fumes while you sleep. And definitely don't go in for a whiff or tell your friends/family to sniff it. Besides just headaches, they can give you nausea and stomach issues. With a few days in good ventilation the fumes should be gone.
The smell has always made me sick and I had to give up on the hobby when I started years ago because my throat was swelling up around my dolls even after leaving them outside for a few weeks. Now my allergies are better and the dolls are quite a bit older and the smell isn’t all that noticeable unless you lean in to sniff them. I’m getting a new doll and I wonder how it will go. Now I’m a bit nervous…
I associate resin smell with new dolls and excitement, so it doesn't bother me as much, but I have noticed that their boxes sometimes smell like new resin long after the doll has been removed. It could be resin smell combined with the smell of the bubble wraps and foam too that make an intoxicating scent.
@aetherbanana Vinyl smells quite lovely and sweet compared to resin. A bit powdery. At least to me. I have my vinyl dolls in a case and always smile when I open it because the scent wafts out. In contrast...when I oepn the section with my floating resin heads...well...it's quite a chemical smell... Ah, but to get to the point of the thread. Yes, some dolls just smell quite strong. It does dissapate over time, but as others have said, if you leave a doll enclosed somewhere for some time you'll catch that resin scent again. Do you have a safe, but out of the house space to set the new resin? Perhaps a garage? Time will do the work.
Hi guys! I’m looking into the matter of BJD resin and the odor they have (new or not), and I hope to receive your share on your personal experience on this matter. Not to go to the ins and outs, just a lil background story, but I find this subject interesting after working on a Shoushou Doll’s head (face-up), and the scent from the resin is so strong, almost fragrance like that got me irritated/ having a mild migraine. Other than that, I’ve never experience any odor that strong, and most of my dolls from Doll Chateau don’t have a scent/ very faint. What is your experience on BJD resin odor and has it ever given you reaction like migraine/ headache/ irritation? Looking forward to hear your shares, thank you so much
I can't say I've ever had a doll give off odor outside of when I first unbox them... usually, I do have to put the doll and box in another room after opening them, because the "new resin smell" gives me a headache too But after about a day or two of "airing out," none of my dolls have any residual stink. I just hope it's not some kind of chemical degrading or that you're smelling sealant that hasn't fully dried? I've never handled a Shoushou doll, unfortunately
They do need time to air out. And some are much, much stronger when first opened. I also think the off-gassing might go on for awhile. My dolls are behind glass and opening the cabinet will definitely get you a good whiff sometimes.
Different resin companies tend to have different smells, I find. Smooth-on resin has little to no smell when freshly cast, but sanding older pieces from them, the odor does tend to get noticeable. I imagine that most BJD companies use different resin (BJB resin even offers a vanilla 'scent' you can add to the resin in it's liquid form), so differing smells make sense. I too have got a mild headache from some brand new dolls (I believe it was df-h). Also, if you were doing a faceup it could have been that when removing the head, the s-hook scraped off a little resin inside the s-hook slot, and that can bring up a lot of fumes, even in older dolls.
I have 2 Shoushou dolls and they don't smell particularly strong or anything compared to my other dolls. I think I remember reading that resin that hasn't cured properly could have a very strong smell? Could the head have been defective?
After a million years of owning a small number of different companies resins, and having suffered from migraines my whole life. I never experienced anything like with MYou's resin scent. I got one back in 2022, after more than ten years of having stopped purchasing BJD. I immediately got a migraine, nausea, and just plain discomfort after opening the box my doll came in. I was afraid I would have to sell him because of how strong the scent was -- I had never experienced anything like that prior, and I already owned about five or six different companies' resins. Luckily for me, after airing my doll for a few days, his scent is no longer giving me grief. Despite me keeping all my resin BID in their boxes, whenever I take him out, he is no longer giving me a migraine. Tge scent has faded quite a bit, I can still smell it some, but nothing as bad as when he first arrived. Good luck with airing yours, and having the scent fade! (:
LEave it in an open container somewhere well ventilated for a week or so. Factory fresh resin is often still offgassing stuff you don't want to inhale
Most new resins I've gotten have been quite mild and pleasant in their smell... aside from Huajing. I have a light tan body from them and after 6 months the smell is still very strong whenever I open the box - I know some other owners have also mentioned the strong odor from them, although it seems to be a hit or miss a bit and maybe dependant on the resin colour/mixture? I wish I knew what causes this exactly, though, but seems like many Chinese companies who have similar resin have this issue every once and a while.
So, I'll preface by saying I basically have a dog's nose. Minor smells imperceivable to others will be obvious to me all the time. Resin always has a smell to me, though I've not had any doll by any company still in business that was especially pungent. (I've owned a ton of different dolls from different companies that I mostly got second hand, and I tended to not repeat on companies much). While the smell doesn't usually seem very noticeable to me once the dolls are unboxed and not new, such as when I have them displayed in a room, any time I pack them away to move them, just in a cardboard doll box for a few weeks to move, when I open the box again the smell slams me right in the face. (I can also smell the dolls if I'm right up on them sniffing) I feel like dolls might be offgassing forever? Whatever it is they seem to be making their chemical plastic smells forever and if they go back in an enclosed space it's very obvious to me again. Anyway, on to migraines! I have a lot of headaches probably from various causes, tension, spine, unknown. Most of my migraines seem to be visual/cognitive without pain, though I also have enough with pain. Since they can be somewhat invisible I don't always notice easily (I'm used to feeling weird) and since I have near constant headache periods I don't always know triggers. However as far as smells go the thing most likely to trigger them is certain types of perfumes. Candles with citrus smells are unfortunately a common one. I've been in the doll hobby over a decade doing things pretty much exactly the same, living in a room with a ton of these, and I've had periods where I have headaches constantly and years and years where I am not having headaches. So, I think at least for me, I could say that the dolls (having always been present) are not triggering me. Not to say it couldn't happen with the wrong combination of doll and person! I'm sorry that was overly thorough. I hope it was helpful
I LOVE that new resin smell. Sometimes, even after they've been boxed away for a time, I'll open a box and get that smell all over again.
Yes I think the smell becomes stronger if the doll lives in a box, even some old dolls will have the new doll stink if they were boxy babies. I have dolls from all those mentioned here to be strong and the smell went away after sitting out for a day or two, including the Huajing light tan which totally had a sharp smell fresh out of the box. the gas smell also sticks to the plastic packing materials. I do tend to hold on to them for the purpose of moving the dolls so I air out the boxes and packing materials as well as the doll. I'm smell sensitive too, some are definitely stronger than others and I am just totally guessing but maybe some maker leaves the dolls out of the box to release the gas longer before packing them up.
I have so many problems with strong scents, resin off-gassing included - it's a lifelong thing, I can't abide all scented things, from fabric softener to scented candles or even scented lip balm (ugh). I have migraines, sinus issues, breathing issues, brain fog, etc. So I truly sympathize with the issue. So far my issues with the odor of resin haven't been too severe. I've had some mild sore throats, coughing, etc. from handling dolls when I first opened the boxes, but I've been careful so far and have been trying to air them out. If the odor of resin bothers you and builds up in a place where you store your dolls, I recommend charcoal satchels that you can find on Amazon and other places. They absorb strong scents from the air and can be "recharged" by an hour or two in sunlight. I keep those in the containers where my dolls are and they definitely help. The newest doll (Maskcat 1/3) still smells fairly strong, but I really haven't given her an opportunity to air out yet since she's new. I will say that the lovely little suitcase she came in was PUNISHINGLY intense in a glue-like odor. So much so that unfortunately I haven't been able to use it! So that's a heads up that sometimes it isn't just the doll, it may be the box and packing materials or the wigs, etc.
I’m actually studying on this matter and yes, smell is an indicator of something that’s not right, but it doesn’t mean toxic (unless tested). For resin, the “gassing” process only happened while it’s curing, after it’s set and solidify it’s not the gassing process anymore but rather the catalyst drying out. Thank you for your sharings Thank you for your sharing, for my case, the doll got sent to me brand new and I didn’t chip it off/ scratched it anywhere. The smell isn’t bad, but it’s very strong. From what I have studied on the matter, it’s less likely that there’s a vanilla scent they added but rather the catalyst they use carry a scent similar to vanilla, such as benzen. I’ve never experience fume/ odor coming out of scratches on dolls though but that’s very interesting to hear. Thank you for your sharing, I think it has something to do with batches of dolls from companies perhaps. I did faceup on brand new Maskcat dolls a few times and none of them ever smell.
I'm sure you are right about batches! And I might be more sensitive than most people - who knows! I should perhaps clarify that I've found Maskcat quite good in general - for example, I have an older 1/3 doll who doesn't give me any trouble at all (which is good, since I love Maskcat dolls!).
I've never noticed a smell from any of mine, but then I'm not very sensitive to subtle smells - I know people in the general doll community (not just resin dolls) who are very sensitive to the smells and have had issues with newly arrived dolls (also who have deliberately sniffed my newly-arrived dolls for that hit of "new-vinyl-smell" for a particular range of dolls they had as a child). I suspect it's one of those individual things that varies greatly from person to person. Teddy
Re: sanding - I was sanding a ca 20 year old Volks head recently and the process brought up a strong resin smell. I guess it has something to do with the porousness of resin under the cast surface and the smell releasing after the layer "closing off" the pores is removed? I wonder if there is a difference to the smell of sanding new vs older resin.
I can’t speak for everybody’s experience but for me, one of my DC doll does not carry any scent when I sand them, but another did. I’m not sure about it too, could be a batch problem?
1 - I don't remember where I read it here, but there is a company that either sprays their packaging or dolls with some fragrance. (I would link it, but it's been some time ago. I just don't remember.) 2 - I have read that resin in contact with plastic, in a tightly closed container, can give off a strong odor. I forgot if prolonged contact could potentially add the natural aging of resin. Speaking of which, I need to remove a doll head out of its bubble wrap. I did open the container to air it out, but I never checked if the smell dissipated.
That's Asleep Eidolon It was the CoA that they sprayed with perfume. I think Xagadoll did it for a while as well (as they are sister companies) and my Xaga body did arrive with a faint flowery smell - unsure if it was the resin, packaging or CoA, though.
Resin smell is one of the issues , most of my dolls like my notdoll, iplehouse din't have that bad of a smell but soom oh boy they were an issue , many of the spare heads/fantasy parts and unused dolls that I've kept in containers still have the smell I would say do the exact opposite of what I did keep it out of box and ventilate the room well but don't overworry the air is so polluted in our times that a few resin fumes won't make a difference in health. As long as you don't live inside the factory that produces them I hardly thing there will be long time effects. It's like a bad smelling perfume causing annoying nausea ventilate well and sometime it will fade . I wish you that it will be soon gone and you'll be free of this smell!!!!
I read somewhere a long time ago that plastics react to plastics. Like, if you store Barbies or something in plastic bins it can eventually discolor them or cause them to warp because their type of plastic breaks down easily? I don’t know how true it is. I’ve got a few old Barbies stored in a bin and so far they look fine. Anyway! That could account for strong smells coming from resin if they’re stored in plastic bins or cabinets. I recently purchased a bunch of stackable cabinet bins with doors to store my dolls in. I just opened one up to sniff and, yup, the resin smell is much stronger than it was a few months ago, when I kept them in a different type of plastic cabinet. Not to the point where it gives me headaches or anything but I might crack the bin doors a bit to let them air. It’s been beautiful outside all week so I’ve had windows open to let fresh air in the house. Now will be a good time to do this before temps start heating up again and we’ll shut the house up in favor of AC.
not all plastics react bad with other plastics but yes one has to be careful , I certainly know that one of the best options for bins is polypropylene , and I never heard about resin reacting especially bad with something but vintage soft vinyl in contact with ABS plactic or certain hard plastics of similar compound may cause melting over the time , and soft silicone like the one in phicen dolls melts if it is left in contact with naylon for long or in a one use plastic bag a guy left his phicen inside a lastic bag and after a few months of forgeting them ended up with a bunch of stainless steel armatures and a very pricey silicone plastic blob scary. In storage I suggest always put a layer between dolls and the bin preferable natural paper (without plastics) like sheets of aquarelle paper or fabric a sheet or towel cotton or linen of very light collor but watch that it is very clean without detergent/softener residue and super dry except if you like mold in dolls. That's why moving and having to put to storage most of my collection was that stressfull one should be so careful Back in the smell theme yes I noticed the smell became stronger after I unpacked something from the move many of my dolls stink almost like new after spending months in a bin I thought it just became noticeable because they didn't ventilate enough or because I just got unused to it but now you say it there might be a reaction.
