>BJD size EXTREMES!!!<

Nov 24, 2010

1. So, BJDs come in all different sizes:1/2, 1/6, MSD, SD..But what about the extremes?!
DreamHigh studio released the smallest bjd to date wich is only 5(!) cm tall!!
Donny Harijanto (the sculptor) calls the little ones micro bjds, and they really are microscopic! But still fully posable (and hella cute!) Can bjds get ANY smaller? Or the other extreme:
Angel of Dreams 90 cm boys! (If Im not wrong) The tallest resin bjds available! When I first saw them I thought that their size was super cool, And I wasnt worried by posing because they seamed to pose really great. But then I thought: The clothing! Restringing! The weight! And though the price is (VERY) cheap for a doll of that size (Lusion Dhalia wich is 80cm costs over 1300 dollars!) I kind of lost my enthusiasm for this doll (though i still love them) it looks like a lot of trouble having such a big doll, so I thought: Can they make them any bigger? Would people buy like a 1meter tall bjd or more? Can resin even stand such a weight?

What do you think? Are these the biggest bjd extremes we have seen? Or can they go even further?:)

2. eeeeeeek, that life like one scares me! I much prefer the smaller BJDs. I am saving up for 16cm and smaller babies! They are much cuter in my opinion!

3. That's an interesting question, actually. Personally, I do think the resin could handle the weight of a really large doll--it's of a question of finding elastic thick and strong enough to keep it together. Being around a lot of SDs and tinies at my house, I've seen much more hesitation in handling the tinies, since it's harder to get restringing tools for the little guys.

I do think they can make them bigger, but the question is, why would you want to? 1 meter or taller heads into the Uncanny Valley, making the doll child size, or human size, and a lot like a mannequin. It will seem less of a doll to me, and more of a "don't touch" work of art. They'd take up more space and therefore be more likely to get knocked over/down and broken. They'd be pretty fragile in comparison.

4. Haha i know what you mean :) I myself am waiting for my first one ! he will be msd <3
But i don´t think dolls bigger than sd would work for me ): they are much to heavy xD <3 and i do like tinies .. but i have a problem about them being so small but cost that much >.<"

(sry for my english XD)

5. I don't have a single SD on my wishlist because I still haven't found a SD sculpt that I find beautiful enough to make me ignore their big size, so I can't imagine myself with a doll bigger than that. Also, I think dolls have a size limit to be dolls. I wouldn't know how to handle and it would probably be left on a corner just like a decorative statue would be. :P

6. i think Soori is big enough for me, at 62cm. any bigger, and they get too realistic. any smaller, and they don't appeal to me as much.

7. Personally I like big. But no bigger then like 90 cm I think. Bigger dolls would probably just sit or stand somewhere in the room and they'd be cumbersome to transport to events or take on outings.

Though, if anyone remembers that Russian girl with the Sabik walking in the park? That is simply beautiful!

The resin can take it, I'm sure of that. It's also an industrial material used for various purposes. I'm a geotechnical consultant and a few weeks ago we had a customer at the office who works for a regional government water management organization for whom I've been designing a set of retaining wall constructions. He told of another project where they are restoring wooden piles in a canal using a construction resin which is similar to resin used in ABJD's. He had also heard about the fact that resin changes colour after a while and I explained to him that this is normal, especcially when exposed to sunlight.

Anyway, the material is very strong.

SD's handle nicely for photoshooting stories. Larger dolls would seem out of place among the SD's I have so far.

8. All my dolls are MSD sized, but I'm looking into getting into SD sizes. I'm fascinated by that life-size on on DA especially! I'd love to have a doll that size.

9. I think the teeny-tiny 5cm tall doll is an adorable idea - in theory - but in terms of doing a lot for it (sewing especially), having it, and using it like a regular BJD doesn't seem feasible. Imagine the eye strain:aeyepop: of trying to sew such itty bitty clothes?!

And a people-sized BJD is just downright creepy!:horror: I can't see myself paying the few thousand (I'm just assuming price) for a doll that looks like a person. They already have dolls that are human-sized, and I'd rather not have my dolls be confused with them. Imagine the gigantic body-bag you'd need for that?

I think my personal limits (on both sides of the scale) are Puki-sized dolls, and 70cm dolls. I've had 2ft tall dolls before, and 70cm seems not terribly huge; 80cm - like the Lusions - seem to big and heavy for me. All I have right now, though, is an MSD-sized doll.

10. For me was Lusion’s Dahlia the extreme, for being a 80 cm tall tiny IMO XD Very cute but definitely not someone I would like to sit here on my couch all the time. And I’m comfortable with any other size 10-70 cm… OK, Mecha Angels maybe would work too XD
What would absolutely kill me is a human size BJD. Just to think how my friends would freak if they look a life-size BJD in the eye makes me LOL.

11. nu123- 8O Wow! The homeless lady figurine got me XD! And the life size bjd..I CAN´T BELIEVE that it´s made of air drying clay!! :O
Cool! Yes, I wouldn´t like having a life sized doll, especially if made of heavy resin, vynil ok but resin? You´ll need a wheelchair to take her around! XD

12. I have enough trouble with my EID Akando... I can't imagine handling anything bigger or heavier than he is. On the other end of things, I'd be terrifed of breaking a doll much smaller than my Banji (15cm). I'm nervous enough about his tiny little fingers and such.

13. @TheGloaming you have to look through the gallery xD I love the pictures when the colours dryes xDD they hanged all pieces in a tree xDD <3

14. Wow, that human sized doll is kinda creepy O.O
I think the biggest I could handle in 65cm . . . I could live with a 70cm . . but I'd prefer not to. The smallest, would be the size my Nixie is, 11cm ^_^
5cm sounds cute *Needs to look up these dolls* but I'd be wayyy to scared I'd lose it!

15. One of the biggest problems I can see with a 5cm and smaller would be clothing and esthetics. Its would be very eays to 'overpower' something that size. Working in such a small scale is difficult.

I do prefer bigger dolls, 80cm is my maximum size preferance, a 90 would be almost half my height which is too big for me so anything over would be a definate no-on. On the other side, Puki sized is really my limit, Its a verstile size thats still very workable with clothing, props and esthetics.

16. I've gotta say, that micro tiny Squee is pretty adorable, and would be totally cute by my puki. But how does one sew for something that size? And I'd need a magnifying glass and a cat whisker to paint such a teeny face! I think they could go a bit smaller (bet those things are strung with elastic sewing thread), but I wouldn't know what to do with something so small. On the other end, bjds could totally go lifesize; some of us just kinda fly over the uncanny valley. Such a thing would be too big and heavy for me to play with (60 cm is too big for me), but I'd love seeing the pictures of them. Actually, some company made life sized dolls similar to dolfie dreams; they'd be totally OT here but their Chobits Chii was pretty cool.

17. I don't like either of extreme sizes. 70cm is the maximum height and 40 the minimum.

MSD is already close to what I find too small, so I don't think I'll ever have a doll
smaller than that, unless it functions as a newborn baby.

The 80/90cm is way too big. They'd come up to my hip and I have never been a fan of giant dolls.
Especially life-sized There's usually too much realism, which, in this size falls into my uncanny valley.
I like my dolls as being obviously dolls.

18. i cant believe no one pointed out a few companies the first on the comes to mind is
Paper Moon with many lifesize dolls which come with or without ball joints depending on your taste
they look like this below ,,there website is here http://www.pmoon.co.jp/ in Japanese oh coarse
[IMG]
they are not the only company making full scale dolls
there is companies like RealDoll that make dolls that can well ,,,lets just say they are sexual in nature
But they are dolls non the less fully posable with silicone skin over a skeleton , there is other companies making similar products too .

there is also mannequins some of which can be posed too look up flexible mannequin

the paper moon dolls start at about $4000 US money and go abit higher
the realdolls are $7000+ US with other companies offering cheaper alternatives
and flex Mannequins start about $600 US and regular ones are $100 to $500 normally which is about the same price as BJD
with well used unes around 100 and new and higher end doll getting into thousands , i seen volks dd dy Yoko sell for $3000 and dd dy Airi sell over $4500 on ebay i mean yes she is a nice doll but damb!

19. LOL! I knew about Paper Moon dolls and other life size dolls of such but they mostly seemed to me like a sort of sexual thing. But I can see a sort of artistic wibe (wibe?) in them. Taking pictures of life size anime dolls in a real environment, that may have an interesting aspect of photography. And I can see a girl (I guess) in that picture too, so sharing your clothes with your doll? Why not?
Could be fun! :)

20. Well, I have to admit I'm very picky when it comes to sizes. I have an 47cm tall girl doll and just ordered a 60cm boy.
Since I'm of small height I'm certain the 60cm boy will already give me reactions like "OH DEAR! So huge!" So having a 90cm doll is definitely a no-no for me. It'd reach to my waist, guys. TO MY WAIST! :o

Therefore, a 1/1 BJD would probably scare the hell out of me, since it would definitely be taller than me. It's nothing I appreciate greatly anyways. Just like someone before me said, I prefer my dolls to be dolls. :3

And... These 5,5cm dolls... Well, I'd probably loose them. x_x

21. The joined Paper Moon Dolls are comparable to the Volks Obitsu in joint style and are not really sexual ,as they dont have the correct lower anatomy they can stand up with a small stand for balance and have tuff skin .
The none jointed Paper Moons are more like Mannequins only prettier!

Mannequins are made to stand and be the most durable but also lack luster of sex or detail!

As where Realdolls are not as posable and are very heavy thus cant stand on their own , great care must be taken to insure they are not injured because their soft silicone skin can rip and tear just like human skin , but they have all the bells and whistles whan it comes to being sexual.

22. I would never want a full human-sized bjd, but I do love love love love big boys. I want all of them to be AT LEAST 60cm. I'm hoping all of them will be 70 cm., with maybe a few 60cms. representing younger kids/teens.

I dont' think I'd mind a 90cm. at all! But after that that gets too big I think :/ Then it's just... i don't know, Uncanny Valley, as is a usual term around here XD

23. Phew, a human-sized BJD sounds like a lot of work. I have one SD at the moment and I always whine about carrying her. She's pretty heavy! I can't imagine getting anything bigger. MSDs are more of my thing but I recently ordered my first Tiny so we'll see if I get stuck on Tinies. XD

24. I worry that a legitimate large doll would be mistaken for dolls like RealDolls too much. But me owning a large doll like that is too much for me. I'd feel like I was lugging around a dead body, or something nutty.

25. I did =_=
I went from one tiny to a whole army.

Ignoring the whole lifesize doll thing, I have an IP EID and he's honestly too big for me and I'm almost 6 ft tall. I can't do anything with him, and I don't really have any desire to. Part of it is his weight and size, the rest are the joints. I can't stand them. I never touch the poor thing, but because he's gorgeous, perfect for his character and limited I won't sell him.

Then on the other hand my Glamor Model from Dollmore is taller than Kamau but doesn't seem as huge to me since he's much slimmer (and all leg). I can handle him so much better and he's less clunky so his size is almost unnoticeable to me.

I have a feeling that those two will remain my biggest dolls while I'm in the hobby. I have no desire to own anything bigger at all XD

As for Tinies, I love my Pukis and YO sized dolls but I'm not interested in anything smaller. I know they exist, but I can't imagine a smaller doll than a Puki right now XD

26. As others have mentioned, neither the Paper Moon dolls nor the Realdolls are on-topic for Den of Angels (the Paper Moon dolls do not have a strung ball-and-socket structure, but rather have jointing more like 1/6 Volks Dollfie and Obitsu dolls, and the Realdolls have silicone sheathing over an armature, and are also clearly meant to serve as sex toys).

To my knowledge, the largest ABJD to have ever been commercially available that did fit the on-topic criteria for Den of Angels was the Dollche 910, a 147cm tall, fully-strung and jointed resin ABJD that was made in 1/1 scale to a petite woman. Unfortunately, the dolls were marketed to collectors of silicone sex dolls, and of course were a huge failure (since they weren't sex dolls), and thus the line was discontinued. When they were available, they were priced at 399,000 yen.

27. Ahhhcck, no, noooo, a 1/1 scale BJD would SCARE me *_* I'm an MSD-sized collector, though I plan to get dolls in the 60cm range, I don't want ANYTHING over exactly 70cm. (and even then, there are only two dolls I want that are 70cm).

There just comes a point when there's too much doll xD;; Also, before anyone beats me to a pulp for saying this, I speak from the ignorant experiences I've... dealt with.
Having a doll at 1/1 scale, even if it *is* a BJD, non-doll people may see a doll that size as something... sexual. Please don't burn the messenger on this one, but it's just something I've seen been mentioned when people are around my dolls. It pisses me off to think someone trying to relate an MSD to a sex doll, but they do. Because people are horrible animals who are utterly glued to their "human needs" of MUST HAVE SEX.

But regardless of that, still, a life sized BJD would scare the living daylights out of me @__@; (And I would probably pay money just to see someone figure out how to deal with one that size xDD)

28. This 5cm tall one is really cute... but i think such a small doll would be forced to sit on some kind of shelf. Way to small for me. The life sized one creeps me out too >_> when i was smaller i always wanted to have a doll as tall es me. thats weird how the taste can change ^^"
70cm is the highest for me. maybe up to 75cm but my Dollzone boy who is 70 cm really is heavy and tall enough. he goes almost to my hip >_>

29. Eeeeeeheehee! The 5cm doll is so cute! I would love to attach little oversized fairy wings to it, dress it up with a tiny masking tape dress (can't imagine sewing for it lol) and make it all adorable...

...and then promptly lose it. Not on purpose of course, but knowing me? It would vanish! :?

I'd blame the plastic velociraptor sitting on my desk. It would be one bite for him.:nowords:

30. That wasn't a well-thought out strategy, was it? :) But there you go. Why would the average bjd collector want to dress and maintain a true bjd that big? I have two lifesized cardboard standees and those haven't been up in my house in 10 years. I haven't had the room in my last few places. I'm not sure I could handle a 90 cm to be honest. Took me a while to get used to 63 cm. I'm waiting on a near-70 cm and that may be as big as I can take. 70-73 cm. I'm more intrigued by SoulDoll's Vito line. a mature male at 52 cm. Easier on the wallet and makes more room for more dolls.

31. I think at a certain point, they become too small or too big. A life sized one would be nice though, because you can just put people clothes on it. But imagine if your doll is bigger than you lol It would be so difficult to carry. And the super tiny ones sound like they might get lost easily, even though they are cute sounding =]

32. Much bigger than your "standard" SD would be too hard to take places. Any smaller than about 11cm and I'd worry about losing it. To each his (or her) own, though.

33. I got a sex-doll comment just carrying my Soom Heliot (70cm) around in public; I don't think I could handle all the crap I'd get for owning a lifesize doll. Also, I couldn't afford one. But if I could and saw one I really really loved, I'd probably get one. A pretty boy to sit in the house with me and scare my family. <3 The size doesn't bother me, nor do large dolls creep me out in any way. It's the price that would deter me, and that I've never seen a doll over 80cm that appeals to me atheistically. Maybe I'm just dreaming of persocoms from Chobits...haha

On the other end, I don't think I could go smaller than a Puki. xD I couldn't justify the price tag for something so small, and I'd lose it. It would fall behind a shelf or a desk and never be seen again. ;o; Little dolls are really cute though, just not for me. ^^;

34. I'd love a life-size BJD!!! Then she could wear my clothes, it would be fun ^-^ I'm actually looking into the Paper Moon dolls right now (I know, they are not considered on topic here, so I'll say no more), the jointed ones, they are so cute! So far the biggest doll I have is a Feeple. I love the big sizes!

35. Interesting topic... I thought it would be hard to have any doll bigger than an MSD! I can't imagine what life would be like with a life-sized doll "roommate". As for the little ones, they are adorable, but just too expensive for me, considering they would be harder to customize and handle in general. I had no idea bjds came in such a size range... you learn something new every day. ;)

36. nu123- Ah... Well, I see that you've seen his actual BJD drying in the trees, but who you linked isn't a BJD! She's is his homeless lady project, who's made of Styrofoam and such, and she doesn't move... his BJD is a 'little match girl' and she looks quite sad...
http://shotakotake.deviantart.com/gallery/24600843?offset=0#/d2olqeb there's the I think best shot of size comparison for her... though you can't see her much.
But yes, I instantly thought of his works, as well Cx

37. i like my dolls to look like they belong together, so if i had a huge doll it'd look like a scary giant next to my other dolls. this is why i wouldn't get something like lusion dahlia where it'd be like HUGE LITTLE GIRL COMING TO TERRORISE TINY 64CM BOYS. also why i wouldn't get a 5cm doll where it'd have to be a character like thumbelina or something. O_o i'm happy with my dolls looking like realistic children/adults in comparison to each other.
of course if i had bought a huge or tiny doll first then i wouldn't want to buy "normal" size dolls because they wouldn't fit in with the doll i had. so then i'd have to keep buying huge/tiny dolls.

38. I would feel really weird sharing clothes with a doll. *_*

And, not wanting to sound offensive, but I can't think of someone sharing a room with a life-sized realistic doll without remembering of those "real dolls".

39. wasnt there also a 90 CM girl made (and still made) by some compnany?
i forgot the name..

40. I would adore a life like and size doll. No space? Ridicules, It would sit on my couch! It would be difficult carrying it around, as i would manly want it for photography purposes, but the shots i could do would be worth it. The themes would be amazing, and definitely worth the maintenance. Not to mention all the possible tricks i could play on people XD Wow, now im dreaming of the day I could own a doll like that

41. I think I'd just be creeped out by super larger dolls or super tiny dolls. Thought it would be neat to have a larger doll then have a tiny version of the same one.

42. The tallest doll I know is Dollmore's Trinity which is 105 cm. I would never want one but she is one of my daughter's Grail dolls. Think about it, she is the size of a toddler!
