BJD Project Runway #5: The Marvelous Mardis Gras Challenge! (Winners Posted)

Mar 15, 2011

    1. Project Runway Game #5
      ‘The Marvelous Mardi Gras Challenge’

      Challenge:
To create a costume that best represents the spirit of the Mardi Gras celebration, New Orleans' style.

We’re looking for costumes suitable for the King of the Carnival, also known as the King of Merriment, and the Queen of the Carnival. We would like the costumes to be as outrageous, flamboyant, flashy, fun, funky or over the top as your imagination dictates! No Halloween-type costumes, please. Here’s a chance for your boys and girls to show off their finery and for cross dressers to strut their stuff!

For anyone unfamiliar with Mardi Gras, information can be found on the web.

      Requirements:
There are four elements that that are present in all US Mardi Gras celebrations: masks, beads, colors and doubloons. These four elements will be required parts of your costume.

      1. Masks: Masks must be made by you. They can be made of any medium: clay, fabric, paper machete, feathers, etc. They can be full face masks, or partial masks. They can be worn on the face or attached to a wand.

      2. Beads: Beads can be used any way you see fit. They may be purchased and can be made of anything: glass, plastic, wood, etc.

      3. Colors: The three colors most associated with Mardi Gras are: Green (faith), Gold (power) and Purple (justice). One of these colors must be present on your costume, or you can use two or all three colors.

      4. Doubloons: Doubloons are special coins minted for Mardi Gras. They have the date of the celebration and different Krewe symbols stamped on them. They are thrown from the floats during the parade. For our challenge the doubloons can be purchased or be hand made coins of any type and medium, and must be used on your costume.

      Accessories:
All accessories must be made by you. Accessories include: hats, scarves, jewelry, leg warmers, gloves, purses, jewelry, etc.
Accessories do not include: shoes, socks, hosiery, and items that would normally be worn.

      WINNERS!!

      Timeline:
Entries must be posted by April 1st 12:00 am (midnight) PST and the contest will end on May 1st 12:00 am (midnight) PST. Winners will be announced on May 14th. AS we've had some confusion, midnight is the beginning of the day on April 1st and May 1st.

      Judging:
Costumes will be judged on the following:
Interpretation, Design Concept, Accessories and Aesthetics.

      Entry Form:
      DOA user name
Size and sculpt of model BJD
Would you like your costume critiqued by a judge?

      Photos:
Your entry post must contain 5 photos: full length photo of front, full length photo of back, 2 detail photos (can be collages) and glamour photo that may include props. These photos must be posted before the end of the challenge and be included in your entry, not in a separate post. Design concepts and progress photos can be in a separate post. Photos are not judged, but please make sure that they’re clear and taken in good lighting.

Please refer to the main thread before asking questions. Most of the answers are contained there:

    4. Just for clarification, by Halloween costumes, we mean vampires, witches, ghosts, skeletons, werewolves, ghouls, zombies and the like.

We want to keep the Mardi Gras concept fun and wacky and on the wild side!

We hope our designers have fun with this theme and we encourage all DOA members to join the challenge! We know there are many very talented people and we'd love to see what you can do!

I just got a full-time job (finally) and I need to find out during this month if I'll have enough time to enter future competitions while school/work walks all over me. If I find that I do have time to sew, I'll be entering the next ones. I do plan to shadow the thread and watch everyone's progress! Good luck, guys! This sounds like a fun challenge!

    10. I would like to enter! Actually Doyle insists that it's him doing the entering, and I'm simply his manager. He's a tailor and loves the idea of a Project Runway contest, and now that Cassius finally has pants :sweat I ought to have time in April to make fun clothes, without feeling obligated to finish anything else.

How about montage pictures of the materials we are going to use? It would be fun to see everyone's stuff. I plan to lay out everything to check my colors before I get started. I hope everything works together; I haven't seen the fabric in real life yet.

I have my fabris picked out. I'm going to use all three colors. At first I didn't think purple and green would go well together, but surprisingly they look pretty good.

I have my doubloons, which are tiny stamped coins from the craft store, and I ordered my beads.

I probably won't post drawings of my designs because I'm no artist! LOL! I do my designing in my head and hope that it comes out the way I want it to!

    39. Here's a photo of the fabrics I'm using. The green is dupioni silk from India. The purple is a silk from China. The other purple is velvet and the gold is some sort of reflective fabric that I've had for years and never used. All of it came from my stash.

The velvet will be made into a cape and lined with the purple silk. I'm not sure yet what pieces I'll make with the other fabrics, but it will come to me when I have finalized the design.

Here's Kismet's cane. I made it from a branch I found in my backyard, which explains why it's slightly bent! LOL! I wraped it in ribbon and added some beaded ribbon streamers. The top is actually a bell. I removed the clapper and hot glued it to the top of the stick.

I finished the cape! Don't pay any attention to the pants, they're not part of his costume.

Here are my fabrics, beads and coins. I am going to start by stringing beads. I hate stringing beads and love playing with fabric, so my reward will be the fabric play-after I do the beadwork. My inspiration was a new wig I made for my girl last month.

Here are pictures of Nasrin in her new wig with one of the strands of beads, her over skirt and underskirt.

    46. Here is my fabrics and main materials that I'm using for this challenge.

I'm not sure the name of the fabrics, so I'll called them by the color,
*Navy fabric -recycled from a sweatpants- will be the pants.
*Gold-ish velvet -recycled from a skirt- will be the jacket/robe. It got pattern in it, like an animal pattern.
Both i bought a year ago from thrift shop.
*Gold silk-ish fabric -leftover fabric that i found in the box- will be the shirt.
*Leather cord -recycled from old belt-, and golden rope, this one i bought new for this challenge.
*Ribbons, only the gold one i bought for this challenge.
*Beads -from old necklace-, and golden chains -from old belts-, I'll deconstruct all of them.
*Clay and paints for the mask and the doubloons, from my own supply.

Still on sure about the buttons and hooks, i will figure them out later.

Oh, i have questions about the doubloons. Is it okay if they are plain both side, no emboss/print?
How about the size, should be doll size? or all size is fine?

      Update Progress:
      -The Mask (WIP)-
I decided to make the mask first since it takes more time.

    47. We are so thrilled that our contestants are starting to post pics of their fabrics and supplies! It makes the challenge so much more fun to see how the costumes begin and the planning that goes into a design!

Please remember to keep all of your pics in the same post!

Varao ~ The doubloons do not have to be stamped, plain is fine. As long as they are round, flat and resemble a coin, they can be anything. As for size that is up to you, but remember that one of the judging categories is 'aesthetics' which is the overall look of the costume, so using coins that are doll sized may be a better choice. You don't want the judges to say, "we love her costume, but the coins are too big and look out of place." Not that they would, but that's just a possibility.

here's most of my materials, i'm not 100% sure on the reddish purple one at the bottom right, i forgot to photograph my feathers x.x

The fabrics color isn't coming across to well unfortunately ^^" there's a lot more purpley shades in there than how it's coming across in the picture.
I'll only be using the coins off the necklace to the far left.

      UPDATE

      here is my completed mask.
It has gold chains attaching the doubloons to the mask, and gold paint (which really isn't photographing well XD) that paints delicate swirls and hearts under the eyes.
It was made with polymer clay, and then coated with a heavily blended shimmer powder in gloss. (i used a lot of powder to take the shine out of the gloss as i didn't want it to be super shiny). A tiny bit of black acrylic paint lines the eyes, and then the feathers are actually ostrich plumes that i carefully snipped and placed around the mask.

now i gotta finish her costume ^^

    49. Well I just dyed my hair purple and green (for a totally separate reason!) so I feel very much in the mood of Mardi Gras!!!

My fabrics are ones I already had, but I bought some amazing gold coins on a string of beads. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to include them in my design.... but I've drawn what I want and I've started sewing! I do lots of concept art, and this is the one I'e gone with. Hehehe I love sewing!

Hope it's ok to post my progress XD

      EDIT!

Here's the triple-layer skirt with coins. I'm so proud of how it's going! LOL

Also, my mask! You can't really see the feathers... but they're there ^_^

    52. PLEASE READ!

We've decided that because the masks are an important part of the costumes that the judges need to see a close up. We're requiring that that our contestants post a separate photo (close up) of their mask with their entry photos. So that would be 6 photos: front, back, 2 detail photos, glamour shot and one close up of mask.

      Thanks!

    53. The close up photos of masks should be posted along with the other required photos of your costumes in your entry post when the rest of your costume in completed. In other words, all 6 pics should be posted at the same time. If you want to post a photo of your mask as a progress pic in a separate post, that's okay too.

    55. Getting to a slow start here... Wish I had design sketches to show, but I can see it in my head better than I can get it on the paper ^^;

I'm planning a sort of slave-leia/belly-dancer-esque thing for the bottoms, and a beaded top. The overall theme is 'peacock' though prices on actual peacock feathers quickly changed some of my original plans. I don't want to blow the whole outfit budget on just one part.

I picked up most of the fabric I'll need yesterday - chiffon for the gauzy bits on the skirt-thing:

Looks like I'll be using polymer clay for my coins, though I haven't picked it up yet.
