I don't own any BJDs so I have not seen how they are in person. What I am currently having difficulty with is figuring out how to have the head pieces connect. Arisu's head has a face plate and the head piece. The neck is attached to the head piece so the face plate can be changed without restringing the doll. My original plan was to make a tab at the bottom and magnets at the top, but I wonder if this is not strong enough. As it is the tab snaps off a few times when demolding, so I am rethinking even doing this. (Part of the problem can be poor pour spout planning.) So I was thinking maybe 2 magnets at top and 2 on bottom? Head Locking Issues by Mothi03, on Flickr Any suggestions on what I can do? Or maybe pictures to illustrate how it can be done? The magnets I am using are 3/16" x 1/16" Neodymium Magnets (N40). The head weighs almost 20 grams. Are my magnets good enough?
maybe those links can help you: this is a headback made by amaeta for unoas http://www.flickr.com/photos/amaeta/3587907157/ another doll with headback http://www.flickr.com/photos/muizenstaartje/5476459987/in/photostream/ fairyland headback: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_jqXqlUSRH...3U/s1600/2010winter_ShiwooMulti_dreamingV.jpg http://i81.servimg.com/u/f81/11/11/48/24/dsc05950.jpg another one: http://s41.radikal.ru/i091/1103/67/17b570fe2290.jpg my bunny also have an headback I can take a picture if you want ^^
Thanks those pictures do give me some ideas and would love to see how your bunny is too. I do have another question too. How strong is the force holding the head parts? If the doll is dropped does the head stay together? Is the magnets the main reason it stays or because of other latches or tabs? I see some have railing to keep the head from going side to side or up and down. Does this also provide a snug fit to help keep the head together or is the fit rather loose? I saw in one of the pictures where a break happened. That is what I am trying to avoid if possible, but I am not sure how well the head is supposed to stay. The triangle at the top seems like a good idea though. Is it acceptable to copy that for my own or is that poo-pooed on?
most of my company dolls have faceplates and is always different, If I dropped my Narae for sure the faceplate is going to pop out! same with my unoa and my pukis! littlefees and pukifees are more strong! you need to be careful. But is hard to be 100% sure with faceplates, sometimes faceplates or headbacks are bigger than others, I have two pukis and the faceplate of one of them keeps falling! and the other never move! same doll, same mold, same company! For sure you can be inspired by the other headbacks, but not copy... even there, Unoas and Narae have quite the same headback and no one is complaining. My bunny's headback have a magnet on the top and a like a 'hook' at the bottom, this way the faceplate don't move ^^ but your head looks quite little, a good magnet or two can be enough !
The Limhwa girl face-plates pop off when the head is tilted too far downwards. :S The Fairyland Feeple65 Chloe face-plate actually needs you to press on the top of the head before it comes off. There are strong earth magnets available, so you could consider using those for a small face-plate.
Thanks for this - I'm trying to make faceplates too. Very inspiring one is the Pipos old Baha head. I found a lot of this is about the direction in which you slide the face on
