Aesthetics BJD Design Update

Mar 11, 2016

    1. Hey everyone!
I posted a while back about my first face-up and so I decided I would share what this cutie has come to. Really, it wasn't a lot of changes but I've been having thoughts that he isn't the best he could be. Some time after I did his first face-up, I blushed his body and hands a little just to bring some color and blush to him.

Anyway, because I'm concerned with how he looks I'll post a few pictures below. (Haha, I forgot that his leggings are the ones that I needed to fix, oops)

(The newest picture of him. Right after I added a bunch of band-aids.)

I'm apologizing now for the huge, awful pictures but I just haven't been able to get out and do anything with him so these are all pictures from when I did things with him (so a few months back).

Critiques or even style ideas are welcome! I'm hoping to make him super cute looking and sticking with the Fairy Kei theme.

    2. Very cute. I love his pink nose! :whee:

    3. Very adorable! I LOVE all of her bangles and bracelets :)

    4. Oh thank you!!
It's just been little by little that I've added on to him. C:

    5. Looks like you've got the blushing down! Pretty good for a first faceup! I especially love his little red nose. Very cute! :whee:For the next time around, maybe try experimenting with bottom eyelashes or eyelid lines. You'll do great!

    6. I love the style you're going for here! The teal bandaid is my favourite <3 I know that nose blushing is something that belongs to your artistic preference, but maybe you should use more pink than red there. The red looks gorgeous on the lips, though- it's just strange having the eyes be lighter than the lips but the lips the same colour as the nose.

Also, the way you did his eye makeup is so good. I want to give you an A+ for not only using warm tones and putting some blue in there. Even though I'm sure that's influence of his hair colour, it looks fantastic and i think a lot of artists skip out on it, and it looks absolutely amazing with those EYES. *O*

Also i accidentally painted fanart? Uhhh... [IMG]
Whoa :B So I was just theorising about what your doll might look like if you put some variation in the nose area, and this came out.
      So did this

      and this
      [IMG]
in which Im trying to show highlighting :) I am actually super noob, and Ive not done a full faceup on a doll yet. But I think if you added highlights in the bright red places, and lowlights in the dark places, you could add more depth if you wanted to. Or you could use the teardrop shading thing that a lot of artists do, where you have a teardrop of red for the nose, and a highlight on the top. I think just that could make it look way nicer.

Also, elfgutz is king or queen (quing even, idk) of shiny/red noses, and I think they use shinier sealant on that area to make it give off actual sickly vibes, since that does happen when your nose gets red for some reason. They have done a lot of dolls, so you might want to go and look for what you like in their nose style and what you dislike, and try to deconstruct how they did it to help you with it.

Ahh, idk who I'm kidding with this- I don't really know what kind of advice i'm trying to give here. I think the lips look pretty gorgeous without change, to be honest. It is just that nose that I think is a place where change could be good.

And heck, why not, I'll include this too because I just went nuts with this post. It might be useful for you to know that there is a such thing as colour zones in the face- yellow, red and blue from top to bottom. Its pretty cool and your use of blue in the faceup reminded me of that. It might help out sometime, or it might not. Im sure many faceup artists don't use this info though, its probably irrelevant, just a fun fact xD

Sorry about this post being all over the place! I hope you might have got something out of it!
Have fun with your cute doll :3nodding:

    7. I really love his eyes :D

I know zilch about the decora/fairy kei stuff so I can't give any advice there, but what @mincy said about the color zones in the face has been really helpful to me, it was pointed out in my own critique thread and someone there posted an awesome diagram!

It also might help to darken the nostrils to make them stand out a little from the strong blush on the rest of the nose, I know not everyone colors in the nostrils but I always do, it's a matter of personal preference as much as the heavy blushing and isn't to everyone's tastes but I feel like the shadows the hollows produce are never enough, especially since some sculpts have really shallow nostrils. It's occurred to me to drill them deeper on a few sculpts where it really bugs me (like my IOS Chaos who barely has nostrils at all) but I'm not that brave yet :sweat

    8. OH MY GOSH
I just jumped on after work and have had an awful week and I literally just screamed, omg
      Thank you ;A;

There is this constant screaming because this made my night. I have been thinking about fixing his nose but I've just been a little hesitant because I do love his adorable little face. But oh my gosh, thank you for the advice. I'll have to read over it again and take a few pointers from your post.

    9. Thank you so much for your replies. I really want to touch up his faceup but because I'm so paranoid, I'm scared I won't be able to replicate it so I might buy another head for him and praaaactiiiiiceee....... Aha. @Lighthouse Asylum and @mincy , thank you so much. When I went to do his faceup for the first time, I was a little too into what I was doing and was very eager with the red and pink for his nose, ha.
      But, thank you so much for the advice! I've had such a strange week and it was awesome coming back to this. ;//w//;

    10. I absolutely love him in combination with the blue wig <3

    11. @stickyshoelaces Aw thank you! It feels nice to know I helped :D I really look forward to seeing what you do with your doll. Fairy kei is the best, after all, and I love your creative style! Cx
I hope you have a better week!

    12. He's so lovely and gentle looking. I love the red nose. My only suggestions would be to add some darker colors in the recesses of the mouth and nostrils, to give him some contrast. It might also delineate the edges of things. The blush around the lips seems to fade instead of having a clear line. That could all be a stylistic choice though. I would also make the nose color fade out a little sooner. Having it go so high up reminded me of the scarecrow from Wizard of Oz (though not in a bad way, I swear, the familiarity just niggled at the back of my mind...).

He looks like he'd be so fun to sit under a blanket with a flashlight and read scary stories with :)

    13. Oh thank you so much!
I'm planning on testing on a spare head here within the next couple of weeks. I'll be getting a new doll here soon so I'll be able to experiment on them as well.
But again, thank you so very much.

    14. @Twillow Thanks! I actually might need to do the darker lines. I think that the contrast would make him look super cute, omg
