20–39cm Dolls BJD attempt no. 1.5

Jul 21, 2020

    1. Now that I'm actually putting proper effort into this project, let's see how she goes.

I will probably make her head smaller once I get up the nerve, but it's a start. I was planning for her to stand around 26cm tall, but I'm pretty bad at sticking to my plans, hence the over-sized head :sweat

    2. Her face is so endearing! Can't wait to see her progress... great work :)

    3. She has a cute face so far! I imagine your design will change a lot over time (if the work of other dollmakers is anything to go by)!

When the clay version is finished, you might even be able to send her to a company that scans dolls and makes 3D models - that way you adjust the size and proportions as much as you would like.

    4. @Ray Vel Thanks so much! I'm excited to see how she wants to take shape... ;)

@StellaMarigold I agree, even going by how my sculptures usually go, the beginning is very different from the end result. The scanning is something I never thought of, and sounds like a neat idea. I knew how to 3D model in my college days but it's all gone from my brain now; I was considering re-learning in order to try a 3D printed doll, but scanning a doll I hand made would be so much more appealing for me!

    5. @Bexalex - Yes, I love the idea of transferring clay to 3D model format.

You might look into this company on Instagram (@syntheticephemera)! In their posts they state:

"Need something printed? We have 2 large format SLA machines, an extra large format MSLA machine and a bank of FDM machines. We now offer 3D scanning! Bring your traditionally sculpted project into 3D. Resize, adjust, and print! Our scanning services start as low as $5 per part! Email us your project at [email protected] or visit syntheticephemera.com"

I did a very little 3D modeling back when I was a kid (just messing around with Blender) but I'd love to find the time to really learn it. Many doll artists seem to be using ZBrush these days, so hopefully there is more information about on how to apply that program specifically to doll-making.
